Hello, my name is Miss Grothe, and I'm really excited to be here with you today.
Today's lesson is called, Having the right Amount of Screen Time.
This fits into the lesson unit Media Influences: How do I decide what to do online? So let's get our eyes ready to do some looking, our ears ready to do some listening, and our brain's ready to do some thinking.
Today's lesson outcome is, I can explain why being online too much is bad for me.
Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules, and we have some friends here to help us.
We have Laura who says we should listen to others.
Andeep says we should respect privacy.
That means if somebody decides to share a story or their experience, that we don't go and repeat it to other people outside of this lesson.
Jacob says, "No judgments." That means if somebody does decide to share a story or their own experience that we don't judge them because of it.
And Izzy says, "Choose your level of participation." That means you can decide if you just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout.
So here are some of today's key words.
I will repeat them first to you, and then you can repeat them back to me.
Are you ready? Internet, online, digital device.
Great job, everyone.
So the internet is a network connecting digital devices all across the world.
Online means using the internet.
A digital device might be a phone, tablet, laptop, computer, or smartwatch.
Here are the rest of today's keywords.
I will read them first to you, like before, and then you can repeat them after me.
Are you ready? Screen time, offline.
Well done.
Screen time is the amount of time that we spend using digital devices.
Offline means not using the internet.
I wonder if you can spot any of these keywords in today's lesson.
Here is today's lesson's outline.
We're going to begin with, why does some people enjoy going online? We use the internet to go online.
The internet is a network that connects digital devices like computers and smartphones all over the world.
A computer is a digital device.
The internet connects computers and other digital devices around the world.
Here are some examples of other digital devices.
A smartphone, a tablet, and a laptop.
Hmm, I wonder if you've seen any of these digital devices before.
Time for a check for understanding.
Which pictures show a digital device? Is it A, B, or C? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said A and C.
A is a smartphone and C is a laptop.
They are both digital devices.
There are lots of fun things to do when we use the internet to go online.
We can chat to our friends, play games, and watch videos.
Some people enjoy going online because it can make them feel different emotions.
They might feel happy, calm and relaxed, or excited.
Alex says, "I love going online to video call my granddad who lives in Australia because it makes me feel happy." Laura says, "Playing games online with my friends makes me feel so excited." Izzy says, "Listening to music online makes me feel calm and relaxed." Some people go online because they feel curious.
This means they want to learn new information.
Going online can help older children and adults when they are working or studying.
Okay, time for a check for understanding.
True or false? Some people go online because it makes them feel excited.
True or false? You can put your hands on your head if you think it's true, or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.
Hmm, some people go online because it makes them feel excited.
True or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said true.
Time for a task now.
Jun is not sure why people go online.
Tell your partner three reasons why people go online.
Include different emotions they might feel when they go online.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answers might have included, they want to feel happy, they want to learn new information, and they want to feel calm and relaxed.
Well done if you said something similar.
We are now going to move on to the second part of our lesson.
Why can't we go online all the time? Having too much screen time can be bad for us.
It can make us feel tired or grumpy.
Spending too much time looking at a screen on a digital device can also make our eyes and head hurt.
Okay, time for a check for understanding.

It's important to have time offline.
This means not using the internet and doing something else.
Izzy says, "I like playing outside after I have been online," and Alex says, "I like playing with my trains after I video call my granddad." Having time offline keeps us happy and healthy.
Here are some things you can do offline.
Play outside, try junk modelling, or paint a picture.
I love junk modelling, so that's something I'm going to do offline.
Not every child spends a lot of time online.
Some people don't have digital devices to go online.
Jun says, "I don't have a digital device at home, but I love playing in the mud kitchen at my local park." That sounds like so much fun, Jun.
Okay, time for a check for understanding.

Time for a task now.
Label Sofia with things that might happen to her if she has too much screen time.
One has been done for you, and I've popped, "She might feel tired." Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answers may include, her head might hurt, her eyes might hurt, and she might feel grumpy.
Well done if you wrote something similar.
We're now going to move on to the third and final part of our lesson.
How do we know when to go offline? Our body can give us signs when it's time to go offline.
When our eyes and heads start to hurt, it means it's time to go offline and do something else.
Izzy said, "Feeling tired or grumpy is another sign that you need to go offline." It's important to listen to our bodies so that we can stay happy and healthy.
Alex says, "What do you like doing offline, Izzy, to stay happy and healthy?" Izzy says, "I love making slime and making arts and crafts when I'm offline." Oh, I love making slime.
What a great activity to do offline, Izzy.
Okay, time for a check for understanding.
True or false? Our bodies can give us signs when it's time to come offline.
Put your hands on your head if you think it's true, or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.

Well done if you said true.
If our trusted adult tells us to come offline, we must listen to them and put our digital devices away.
They can help us find something else to do if we are not sure.
Sometimes we might not realise that we have been online for a long time, but trusted adults can remind us when it's time to take a break.
Izzy says, "When I play games online, I have so much fun that time feels like it's going really quickly." Okay, time for a check for understanding.
What should we do when our trusted adult tells us to come offline? A, ignore them.
B, listen to them.
Or C, put your device away.

Okay, time for a task now.
Aisha is watching videos online.
Aisha's dad has just told her it is time to go offline.
Write one to two sentences to tell Aisha what she should do next.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answers might have included, "Aisha should listen to her dad, she should stop watching videos online and put her digital device away.
She should go and do something else offline, like play outside." Well done if you wrote something similar.
This takes us to the end of our lesson, and I've had a wonderful time with you today.
