Hello, my name is Miss Ruth.

Today we are going to be looking at the lesson, "Sleep is important".

This fits into the lesson unit, Physical health: How can I look after my body? So let's get ready to begin.

Let's get our eyes ready to look, our ears ready to listen, and our brains ready to do some thinking.

Today's lesson outcome is, "I can explain why sleep is important and how it keeps me healthy." Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules together, and we have some friends here to help us.

Laura says we should listen to others, and that means not interrupting when somebody else is speaking.

Andeep says we should respect privacy, and that means if somebody decides to share a story or their own experience in today's lesson, that we don't go and repeat it to others outside of this lesson.

Jacob says no judgements, and that means if somebody does decide to share their story or own experience, that we don't judge them because of it.

And Izzy says, "Choose your level of participation." And that means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout.

Here are today's key words.

I will read them to you first and then you can repeat them after me.

Are you ready? Sleep, health, routine, bedtime.

Well done.

Sleep is a natural state of rest for the body and mind that helps us to stay healthy.

Health means how well your body and mind feel.

Routine means doing things regularly at a particular time of the day.

And bedtime is the time when we go to bed to sleep.

Let's see if we can spot any of these keywords in today's lesson.

Here is the lesson's outline, and we're going to begin with, "Why is sleep so important for our health?" Sleep is important for our health.

When our bodies are healthy, we can grow, play, and learn at school.

When we sleep, our bodies and mind can rest and get ready for the next day.

Laura says, "It's like charging a tablet or phone! Without sleep, our body cannot do all the things it needs to do the next day." Sleep is also important so that our bodies can grow and repair.

Jacob says, "If we are sick or have hurt ourselves, our body can get better while we sleep." Time for a check for understanding.

What happens to our bodies when we sleep? Is it A, we grow; B, we eat; or C, we repair? Hmm.

What happens to our bodies when we sleep? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said A and C.

When we sleep, our bodies can grow and repair.

Sleep is especially important for our brains.

When we sleep, our brains get a chance to think about what we've learned each day so that we can remember and learn new things.

Getting enough sleep each night can make us feel happy and calm the next day.

Laura says, "When I get enough sleep at night, I feel like I can do my best at school the next day." Time for a check for understanding.

True or false? Getting enough sleep each night can make us feel happy and calm the next day.

And you can put your hands on your head if you think it's true or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.

Hmm.

Getting enough sleep each night can make us feel happy and calm the next day.

True or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said true.

Time for a task now.

Andeep is talking about why sleep is important for our health.

Andeep says, "Sleep is important because our brains get a chance to think about what we've learned, so that we can remember and learn new things." Tell your partner two more reasons why sleep is important for our health.

Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.

Well done for having a go.

Your answer could include: Sleep is important so that our body and mind can rest and get ready for the next day.

Sleep is important because it can help our body to grow and repair if we are sick.

And sleep can make us feel happy and calm the next day.

Well done if your answer was similar to mine.

We are now going to move on to the second part of our lesson, "How do good sleep habits make us feel better?" A habit is when we do something over and over again, almost without thinking about it.

Jacob says, "For example, I remember to brush my teeth when I wake up and before I go to sleep each day.

This is a habit that keeps my teeth clean and healthy." Well done, Jacob.

Time for a check for understanding.

True or false? A habit is something that we do sometimes.

Hmm.

You can put your hands on your head if you think it's true, or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.

A habit is something that we do sometimes.

True or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said false.

A habit is something that we do over and over again, almost without thinking.

Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day is a good sleeping habit.

When we go to bed and wake up at the same time each day, our bodies get used to the routine.

This makes it easier for us to fall asleep at bedtime.

Time for a check for understanding.

Why is it important to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day? Is it A, because our body gets used to the routine; B, because we will get better at doing maths; or C, because it makes it easier to fall asleep at bedtime? Hmm.

Why is it important to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said A and C.

It's important to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day because our body gets used to the routine and then this makes it easier to fall asleep at bedtime.

Another good sleeping habit is making sure that we get enough sleep each night.

This means going to bed and waking up when our trusted adult tells us to.

Some people think that if they do not get enough sleep on school nights, they can catch up on sleep on the weekend or in the holidays.

This is not true.

Our bodies and minds need enough sleep each night so that we can rest, repair, and grow.

If we do not get enough sleep each night, we might feel grumpy or tired the next day.

This makes it harder to do things like learn at school or play with our friends.

Izzy says, "When I don't get enough sleep at night, I feel grumpy the next day and find it difficult to learn at school." Me too, Izzy.

Time for a check for understanding.

True or false? We can catch up on sleep on the weekends if we go to bed late on a school night.

Hmm.

Put your hands on your head if you think it's true, or your hands on your shoulder if you think it's false.

We can catch up on sleep on the weekends if we go to bed late on a school night.

True or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said false.

Our bodies and minds need enough sleep each night so that we can rest and grow.

Not getting enough sleep can make us feel grumpy or tired, and make it harder to do things, like playing or learning.

Time for a task now.

Write one good sleeping habit that we should remember to do.

Then tell your partner why the sleeping habit is good for us.

Andeep says, "Use the pictures to help you!" Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.

Well done for having a go.

Your answer could include: Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day is a good sleeping habit.

This habit is good for us because it helps our bodies get used to the routine and fall asleep easier at night.

And getting enough sleep each night is a good sleeping habit.

This habit is good for us because it makes sure our bodies can rest, repair and grow.

Well done if your answer was similar to mine.

We're now going to move on to the third and final part of the lesson.

What does a good bedtime routine look like? A good bedtime routine tells our body and mind that it is time to sleep.

This helps us to fall asleep quicker in bed.

Andeep says, "Can you think of something you do before bedtime each night that helps you to fall asleep?" Hmm.

It's important to do something relaxing or calming before bedtime so that we can fall asleep more easily.

For example, reading a book or listening to relaxing music.

Time for a check for understanding.

Why is it important to do something relaxing or calming before bedtime? Is it A, because it makes us feel excited; B, because it makes it easier to fall asleep; or C, because it makes it harder to fall asleep? Hmm.

Why is it important to do something relaxing or calming before bedtime? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said B.

It's important to do something relaxing or calming before bedtime because it makes it easier for us to fall asleep.

Using devices before bedtime, like a tablet to play an online game, can make it more difficult for us to fall asleep.

Jacob says, "We should try and put our devices away at least one hour before bedtime." Andeep says, "If our trusted adult tells us to turn off our devices before bedtime, we must listen to them." A good bedtime routine also includes getting ready for bed, like having a bath or brushing our teeth.

Jacob says, "Having a bath before bed makes me feel sleepy." Time for a check for understanding.

True or false? Using devices like tablets or phones helps us to fall asleep at night.

Hmm.

You can put your hands on your heads if you think it's true, or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.

Using devices like tablets or phones helps us to fall asleep at night.

True or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said false.

Using devices like tablets or phones before bedtime can make it harder for us to fall asleep.

The bright light from the screen of the device tells our brain that it is time to be awake even when we should be feeling sleepy.

It's important to always tell a trusted adult if you are worried about going to sleep.

Jacob says, "A trusted adult might be your parent, carer or teacher." Time for a check for understanding.

Who could we speak to if we are worried about going to sleep? Is it A, our friend; B, our parent; or C, our teacher? Hmm.

Who could we speak to if we are worried about going to sleep? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said B and C.

We could speak to our parents or teacher if we are feeling worried about going to sleep.

Time for a task now.

Draw two things that we should do in our bedtime routine to help us fall asleep.

Then tell your partner what activities you have drawn.

Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.

Well done for having a go.

Your answers could include a picture of somebody reading a book and then a picture afterwards of somebody brushing their teeth.

Well done if your answers were similar to mine.

Here is a summary of everything that we've covered in today's lesson.

Sleep is important for our health.

When we get enough sleep each night, our body and mind can rest, repair and grow.

If we do not get enough sleep each night, you might feel grumpy or tired the next day.

This stops us from doing things like learning or playing.

Good sleeping habits include going to bed and waking up at the same time each day.

A good bedtime routine includes doing something relaxing before going to bed, like having a bath or brushing our teeth.
