Hello, my name is Miss Wroth.

Today, we're going to be looking at the lesson, How to search Online.

This fits into the lesson unit, Media influences: Is everything I see online true? So let's get ready to begin.

Today's lesson outcome is I can describe how to search the Internet safely and effectively.

Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules for today's lesson, and we've got some friends here to help us.

Laura says we should, "Listen to others." Andeep says we should, "Respect privacy." That means if somebody decides to share a story or their own experience, that we don't go and repeat it to other people outside of this lesson.

Jacob says, "No judgement !" and that means if somebody does decide to share a story or their own experience, that we don't judge them because of it.

And Dizzy says, "Choose your level of participation," and that means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout the lesson.

Here are today's key words.

I will read them first to you, and then you can repeat them after me.

Are you ready? Internet.

Online.

World Wide Web.

Well done.

The Internet is a network connecting digital devices across the world.

Online means using the Internet, and the World Wide Web are the websites on the Internet.

Let's see if we can spot these keywords throughout today's lesson.

And here are the rest of today's keywords.

Like before, I will read them first to you, and then you can repeat them after me.

Are you ready? Information.

Search bar.

Well done.

Information are the words and pictures that we can use to understand something, and search bar is the box where you type in something you want to find online.

I wonder if we can also spot these keywords in today's lesson.

Here is the lesson's outline, and we're going to begin with, How do we use the Internet to find something? We can use the Internet to search for different things online.

Jacob says, "My mom uses the Internet to find directions to different places." Izzy says, "I like using the Internet to search for funny videos." When we search things online, we use the World Wide Web to find different websites, and here is a website illustration on your screen.

The World Wide Web is like a giant library, where information is stored online.

Time for a check for understanding.

Fill in the missing word in this sentence.

The World Wide Web is a place where is stored.

Hmm.

Is the missing word, A, books, B, information, or C, computers? Hmm.

Fill in the missing word in this sentence.

The World Wide Web is a place where is stored.

Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said B, information.

The World Wide Web is a place where information is stored.

We can type things into a search bar to find information.

When we type things into a search bar, the Internet will take us to a list of websites we can choose from.

For example, if we search for animals, it will take us to a list of websites all about animals, like animal facts, cute animals, and pets.

Once you find a website you want to click on, it will take you to a page with information, photos, or videos.

For example, if I clicked on Animal facts, it will take me to a page with animal facts.

This page says, "Animal Facts! Owls are nocturnal." Time for a check for understanding.

True or false? We can type things into a search bar to find information.

You can give me a thumbs up if you think it's true, or a thumbs down if you think it's false.

Hmm.

We can type things into a search bar to find information, true or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said true.

Time for a task now.

Sofia wants to use the Internet to find a recipe for her favourite pasta dish.

Explain to Sofia how to use the Internet to search for the recipe.

Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.

Well done for having a go.

Your answer could include, use the search bar to type in the name of the recipe.

Then choose the website you want to click on.

Click on the website, and you will find your pasta recipe.

Well done if you said something similar.

We're now going to move on to the second part of our lesson, Why should we spell correctly when searching? We must think carefully about what we type into the search bar so that we can find the information we need.

The Internet is getting much better at correcting spelling mistakes or guessing what we want to search when we type something online.

For example, if I type in ca, then the Internet guesses, "Hmm, I wonder if you want to find out about cats or catching fish or cactuses." However, the Internet does not always know what we are thinking.

This means if we rely on the Internet to correct or guess for us, we might end up on the wrong website.

Izzy says, "I wanted to search for cake recipes, but the Internet thought I was searching for information about cats." Oh, that silly Internet.

What do they like? Time for a check for understanding.

True or false? The Internet always understands what we are thinking.

Hmm, gimme a thumbs up if you think it's true, or a thumbs down if you think it's false.

The Internet always understands what we are thinking, true or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said false.

Even though the Internet is good at correcting our spelling mistakes and guessing what we want to search.

it cannot understand what we are thinking.

We must be careful when typing in the search bar.

It's important to spell words correctly when we search things online.

If we spell words incorrectly, we might end up on the wrong website.

Jacob says, "I wanted to search for images of cats, but I accidentally typed in hats." When we spell words correctly, the Internet can help us find the right information.

For example, if we type incorrectly cat images, then the Internet will take us to a page with cat images.

Time for a check for understanding What might happen if you spell something incorrectly when searching online? A, the Internet will become slower, B, you might end up on the wrong website, or C, your digital device will stop working.

Hmm, what might happen if you spell something incorrectly when searching online? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said B.

If we spell something incorrectly when searching online, you might end up on the wrong website.

Time for a task now.

Jun wants to use the Internet to find out information about dogs.

Tell your partner why it is important that Jun spells words correctly in the search bar.

Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.

Well done for having a go.

Your answer could include, it's important that Jun spells words correctly in the search bar so that he can find the right information.

For example, if he accidentally types in logs instead of dogs, he will end up on the wrong website.

Well done if your answer was similar to mine.

We're now going to move on to the third and final part of our lesson, How can we search the Internet safely? It's important to be careful when searching the Internet so that we can stay safe online and find the right information.

We need to be specific.

This means exact.

When typing in a question in the search bar, being specific helps the Internet understand what we want to search for.

For example, if we want to find out what penguins eat, we should type in what do penguins eat? instead of just penguins.

If we just type in penguins, it could lead us to lots of different information about penguins, like penguin onesies, cute penguins, or a penguin zoo.

When we are specific, it is easier to find the information we need.

For example, if we type in, what do penguins eat? the Internet will come up with different pages all about penguin's food, for example, penguin diet, penguin food, and penguin dinner.

Time for a check for understanding.

Izzy wants to find out how flowers grow.

What should she type into the search bar to make her search specific? Is it A, flowers, B, how do flowers grow, or C, growing plants? Hmm, Izzy wants to find out how flowers grow.

What should she type into the search bar to make her search specific? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said B.

Izzy should type into the search bar, How do flowers grow? This will make her search more specific.

Clicking on trusted websites, like museum websites and school websites, can help us find correct information as they are more likely to tell the truth.

Some websites and apps are not made for children.

We should only use websites and apps that our trusted adult has agreed on when searching the Internet.

Remember to always tell a trusted adult if you see something online that makes you worried or upset.

This is also true wen searching the Internet.

If you see something that worries or upsets you when using the search bar, tell a trusted adult.

We should also tell our trusted adult if we can't find the information we are looking for online.

Izzy says, "My trusted adult helped me to find a trusted website when I couldn't find information online about football players." Time for a check for understanding.

True or false? It's okay to use a website or app when searching online without a trusted adult's permission.

Hmm.

True or false? You can give me a thumbs up if you think it's true or a thumbs down if you think it's false.

It's okay to use a website or app when searching online without a trusted adult's permission, true or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.

Well done if you said false.

We must always ask a trusted adult before using a website or app In searching the Internet.

This keeps us safe as not all websites and apps are made for children.

Time for a task now.

Read each statement, and colour the flag in green if you agree and red if you disagree.

Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.

Well done for having a go.

Your coloured in flags should look like this.

For the first statement, it says, "We should ask a trusted adult before clicking on a website or app." This flag should be in green.

For the second statement, it says, "We should show our friend if we see something online that makes us worried or upset." This flag should be red.

For the third statement, it says, "We shouldn't use trusted websites when searching the Internet." This flag should also be red, and for the final statement, it says, "We should be specific when typing in the search bar." This flag should be green.

Well done if you've got those correct.

This brings us to the end of our lesson, and here is a summary of everything that we've learned today.

We use the World Wide Web when searching the Internet.

Although the Internet is getting better at correcting spelling mistakes and guessing what we would like to search, it cannot understand what we are thinking.

Therefore, it is important to think carefully about what we type into the search bar.

We should spell words correctly and be specific.

This way, we find what we are looking for more easily.

Select trusted websites from the search list because they are more likely to share correct information.

We must always tell a trusted adult if we see something online that makes us worried or upset.

Here is a slide with different places that you can get support.

The Childline.

the Childline is a website and phone line, which is able to offer confidential advice and support.

The CEOP.

The CEOP helps protect children from online abuse and exploitation.

and the Internet matters.

The Internet matters teaches children and parents how to stay safe and happy online while using the Internet.
