Hello, my name is Miss Wroth.
Today we're going to be looking at the lesson Spotting Fakes.
This fits into the lesson unit Media Influence, Is Everything I See Online True? So let's get ready to do some learning together.
Today's lesson outcome is I can explain why some things online are not real and explain how to identify when they are fake.
Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules together, and we have some friends here to help us.
Laura says, we should "Listen to others." Andeep says, we should "Respect privacy." That means if somebody decides to share a story or their own experience, that we don't go and repeat it to other people outside of this lesson.
Jacob says, "No judgement !" And that means if somebody does decide to share a story or their own experience, that we don't judge them because of it.
And Izzy says, "Choose your level of participation." That means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout the lesson.
Here are today's key words.
I will read them first to you and then you can repeat them after me.
Are you ready? Internet.
Online.
Identity.
Fake.
Well done.
Internet is a network connecting digital devices across the world.
Online means using the internet.
Identify means to spot something or see it clearly.
And fake.
When something is fake, it is not real.
Let's see who can spot these keywords in today's lesson.
Here is the lesson's outline, and we're going to begin with is everything we see online true? The internet is a network that connects digital devices all around the world.
Anyone who uses the internet to go online is able to upload or post videos, photos, and information for people to see.
Here are some buttons you might see online that allow people to upload things to the internet.
Time for a check for understanding.
Who can upload things onto the internet? Is it A, only adults who use the internet? B, anyone who uses the internet? Or C, only teachers who use the internet? Hmm, who can upload things onto the internet? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said B, anyone who uses the internet can upload things.
Not everything we see online is true.
Some people who upload things to the internet don't always tell the truth.
This means it can be difficult to identify whether something online is real or fake.
Sometimes people upload videos and photos that look real, but are fake.
Just like this picture of a flower.
It looks real, but it is fake.
Jacob says, "I find it really hard to identify fake photos." Me too, Jacob.
It can be tricky.
It's also easy for people to upload information online that is not true.
For example, this person has uploaded this post.
"Cats can now talk! Hello." This information is not true.
Time for a check for understanding.
True or false? It's always easy to identify if something online is real or fake.
You can give me a thumbs up if you think it's true or a thumbs down if you think it's false.
Hmm.
It's always easy to identify if something online is real or fake.
True or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said false.
Sometimes people upload things online that look real, but are fake.
Time for a task now.
Sofia is talking about going online.
Sofia says, "Everything online is true because only adults can upload things to the internet." Tell your partner if you agree or disagree with Sofia and why.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answer could have included: "I disagree because anyone can upload things online and sometimes they don't always tell the truth." And your answer could have also included: "I disagree because sometimes people upload things that look real but they are fake." Well done if your answer is similar to mine.
We're now going to move on to the second part of our lesson.
How might we get tricked online? There are different ways we could be tricked online.
It's important to think carefully about if something online is true or fake so that we don't get tricked.
Sometimes we might see a link that looks real but is fake, just like the one on our screen.
They might use photos or words that seem real so that we click on them.
Laura says, "A link is a word or picture that sends you to a new website or page if you click or tap it." If we click on a fake link, it might send us to a different website.
For example, if we clicked on this fake link, it could take us to this website where it's asking us to fill out these details, like our name, age, or address.
Some people use fake links to trick you to get personal information like your name or age.
Time for a check for understanding.
True or false? Fake links can trick us and send us to a different website.
Hmm.
Give me a thumbs up if you think it's true or a thumbs down if you think it's false.
Fake links can trick us and send us to a different website.
True or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said true.
Fake pop-ups or adverts that promise something exciting like a free toy or game can trick people to click on them just like this fake pop-up and advert on the screen.
It says, "Click here for a free toy." But this is a fake link.
Laura says, "Pop-ups come onto your screen and might have bright colours to get your attention." Time for a check for understanding.
Fill in the missing word in this sentence.
Fake pop-ups or adverts can trick us by promising something.
Hmm.
Is the missing word A, scary? B, exciting? Or C, boring? Hmm.
Fake pop-ups or adverts can trick us by promising something.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said B, exciting.
Fake pop-ups or adverts can trick us by promising something exciting.
We can get tricked when we read fake information online that sounds true.
Just like this example.
This post says, "This flower grew on the moon." Some people online can pretend to be someone they're not to try and trick others.
The person might pretend that they are a child like you or your friend.
Here is an example of someone pretending to be Alex's friend.
He says, "Click on this link to play a game with me." Alex says, "No, I need to check with my trusted adult first." Well done, Alex.
You made a good choice.
Sometimes it can be very difficult to know if we are being tricked.
Laura says, "it's important to always ask a trusted adult if you are unsure if something is real or fake online." Time for a check for understanding.
True or false? Fake pop-ups and adverts can trick people by promising something exciting like a free toy or game.
Hmm.
You can give me a thumbs up if you think it's true or a thumbs down if you think it's false.
Fake pop-ups and adverts can trick people by promising something exciting like a free toy or game.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said true.
Time for a task now.
Look at this website.
Identify and tell your partner two ways someone might get tricked if using this website.
One has been identified for you.
They spotted the fake information.
It says, "Guess what? Horses can now fly!" And they identified that this person might get tricked by believing the fake information.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answers could include: "By clicking on the fake pop-up or advert." And, "By clicking on the fake link that might take you to a different website or try to get your personal information." We're now going to move on to the third and final part of our lesson.
How can we tell if something is real? Sometimes it can be difficult to identify if something online is real or fake.
However, there are clues to look out for and questions we can ask that can help us decide if something is real.
Looking closely at the photo, video, or information can help us identify if something is real.
If it looks strange or not right, then it's probably fake.
Jacob says, "This photo is definitely fake because we don't have trees growing around our heads." Well spotted, Jacob.
You're absolutely right.
However, even if we look closely, sometimes it can be hard to tell if something is real.
For example, this picture, is it real or is it fake? What do you think? It's a fake photo.
Jacob says, "Digital devices are getting much better at creating photos and videos that look real but are fake." Time for a check for understanding.
True or false? We can always tell if something online is real if we look closely.
Hmm.
Gimme a thumbs up if you think it's true or a thumbs down if you think it's false.
We can always tell if something online is real if we look closely.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said false.
Looking closely can help us if something looks strange or not right.
However, sometimes it can be hard to tell, even if we look closely because digital devices are getting much better at creating fake images.
Sometimes asking other people what they think, such as trusted adults can help us decide if it's real or fake.
For example, Izzy has been looking at this image online.
She's not sure if it's real or fake.
Then she has a closer look and she asks her trusted adult.
Izzy says, "I think this is fake because it looks strange." Izzy's Auntie says, "I agree.
His finger wouldn't be able to come out of the screen like that.
Well done, Izzy." Trusted websites like museum websites, school websites, or official news websites are more likely to post things that are true and not fake.
Laura says, "Trusted websites are places online that don't try to trick you.
They can help us identify if something online is real." Time for a check for understanding.
What can help us identify if something is real online? Is it A, trusted websites? B, trusted adults? Or C, bright colours and popups? Hmm.
What can help us identify if something is real online? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said A and B.
Trusted websites and trusted adults can help us identify if something is real online.
Time for a task now.
Write down two ways that we could check if this photo is real or fake.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answer could include: "Look closely to see if something looks strange or not right." "Ask a trusted adult what they think." And "Check to see if it has been posted on a trusted website." So that brings us to the end of our lesson and I've had a fantastic time with you today.
Here is a summary of everything that we've covered in today's lesson.
It can be difficult to identify if something online is real or fake because anyone can post on the internet.
We can get tricked online by fake links, pop-ups, and adverts, or people pretending to be someone else.
There are different ways that can help us identify if something is real or fake online.
For example, we can check to see if something looks strange or not right, or ask a trusted adult for help.
We can also see if it has been posted on a trusted website as they are more likely to post things that are not fake.
Here is a slide of different places to get support.
The Childline.
The Childline is a website and phone line which is able to offer confidential advice and support.
The CEOP.
The CEOP helps protect children from online abuse and exploitation.
And the Internet Matters.
Internet Matters teaches children and parents how to stay safe and happy online while using the internet.
