Hello, my name is Miss Wroth.
Today, we're going to be looking at the lesson, What to do if we see lies online.
This fits into the lesson unit Media influences: Is everything I see online true? Now in this lesson, we're going to be talking about why some people might lie online and what to do if we see lies online.
If at any point you feel worried or uncomfortable, it's important that you pause the video and find your trusted adult to speak to.
Right, let's get ready to begin.
Today's lesson outcome is I can explain what to do if someone is lying online.
Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules together, and we have our friends here to help us.
Laura says, "We should listen to others." Andeep says, "We should respect privacy." That means if somebody decides to share a story or their own experience, that we don't go and repeat it to others outside of this lesson.
Jacob says, "No judgement !" That means if somebody does decide to share their own story or their experience, that we don't judge them because of it.
And Izzy says, "Choose your level of participation." That means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout.
Here are today's key words.
I will read them to you and then you can repeat them after me.
Are you ready? Truth.
Lie.
Worried.
Well done.
Truth means something that is real.
Lie means something that is not true.
And worried means thinking about something bad or upsetting.
Let's see if we can spot these keywords throughout the lesson.
Here is today's lesson's outline, and we're going to begin with why should we tell the truth online? People who use the internet can go online and share photos, videos, and information.
However, not everyone tells the truth when they go online.
Andeep says, "Can you think of a reason why someone might lie online?" Some people lie online because they think it's funny to trick others, they want to look cool and impress others, and they haven't checked if the information is true before sharing it online.
Time for a check for understanding.
Why might someone lie online? Is it a, because they want to help others, b, they want to trick others, or c, they want to impress others? Hmm, why might someone lie online? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said b and c.
Someone might lie online because they want to trick others, or they might want to impress others.
Although some people might lie online, it's still important to tell the truth when using the internet.
Izzy says, "Telling the truth online is the kind thing to do." Sofia says, "When we tell the truth, it's fair to everyone, because no one is confused or tricked." Telling the truth online keeps everyone safe.
If we know that the information we read online is true, we can make good choices and not get hurt.
For example, if someone lies online about doing something dangerous or scary, people might believe that it is true and try to copy them.
For example, somebody posted, "I just did 20 front flips of the school climbing frame!" But this is very dangerous and should not be copied.
This could end up with someone getting hurt.
Telling the truth online is something to be proud of.
Sofia says, "It feels good to know we're making the right choice and setting a good example to others." And I couldn't agree more, Sofia, well done.
Time for a check for understanding.
Why is it important to tell the truth online? Is it because a, it's the kind thing to do, b, because people want to be our friend, or c, because it keeps everyone safe? Hmm, why is it important to tell the truth online? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said a and c.
It's important to tell the truth online, because it's the kind thing to do and because it keeps everyone safe.
Time for a task now.
This information is a lie.
Somebody's posted, "It's not important to wear sun cream." Tell your partner why it is important that this person tells the truth.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answer could include, it is important to tell the truth because if people see this lie and believe it, they might not wear sun cream and could get sunburned.
Telling the truth helps keep people safe and helps stop them from getting hurt.
Well done if you said something similar to your partner.
We're now going to move on to the second part of our lesson.
How does it feel if someone lies online? When we see someone lie online, it can make us feel different emotions.
We might feel upset, confused, or worried.
Time for a check for understanding.

It can make us feel unsure about what's real and what isn't.
And we might feel worried if we see someone lie online, especially if the person has shared something dangerous or scary.
Sofia says, "Remember to always tell a trusted adult if you see something online that worries, upsets or confuses you." It's important to remember that no matter how small or harmless a lie might be, it is always better to tell the truth online.
Andeep says, "I feel happy and safe when I know someone is telling the truth online." So do I Andeep.
Time for a check for understanding.
True or false? It's okay to tell small lies online.
Put your hands on your head if you think it's true, or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.
Hmm, it's okay to tell small lies online, true or false? Pause this video so you can have so thinking time.
Well done if you said false.
Even small lies online can affect others.
Telling the truth online is important, so that we don't make others feel upset, confused, or worried.
Telling the truth keeps people safe online.
Time for a task now.

First label the emotions Alex might be feeling.
Then for one of the emotions, explain to your partner why Alex might feel this way.

Trusted adults can report or block things like photos, videos, and information if we think someone is lying online.
Sofia says, "Most websites and apps will have a button that trusted adults can click to report or block something." When a trusted data reports a photo, video or information, it tells the website or app that something isn't right about the content.
Sofia says, "Websites and apps can remove the content, so that people can't see it." The block button can stop people from sending messages to us or viewing our online accounts.
Time for a check for understanding.
What can the report and block buttons do? Is it a, tell the website or app that something isn't right, b, change the colour of the screen to red and black, or c, stop people from sending messages to us? Hmm, what can the report or block buttons do? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
