Hello, my name is Miss Willow, and I'm so excited to be teaching you today's lesson.

Today's lesson is called Food is Important and it fits into our unit, Physical Health: How Do I Eat a Balanced Diet? We're going to do some fantastic learning today, so let's make a start.

By the end of today's lesson, you'll be able to explain why eating a range of foods is important.

Before we get started, we need to go over some ground rules.

These help to make sure that everyone stays feeling really comfortable throughout today's lesson.

We've got some friends to help us remember these ground rules.

Laura says that we need to "Listen to others." That means that if someone else is speaking, we're not going to interrupt them.

Andeep says we should respect each other's privacy.

That means if someone chooses to share a story or an experience, we're not going to repeat that story outside of this lesson.

Jacob says, we need to not have any judgement.

That means if someone chooses to share a story, we're not going to judge them for it.

And Izzy says that we can choose our level of participation.

That means it's up to us how much we want to join in.

We're now going to go through the keywords in today's lesson.

These are really important because they're gonna come up quite a few times and we need to know what each word means.

I'm going to say the keyword and when I do this, I would love if you could repeat it back to me.

So I'm going to start.

Healthy, starchy foods, protein hydrated.

Brilliant.

Well done.

Okay, so healthy.

This means taking care of our body and our mind so that we feel good and we don't get sick.

Starchy foods.

This is a type of food group including bread, pasta, potatoes, and cereal.

Protein.

This is a type of food group including eggs, meat, fish and beans.

And finally, hydrated.

This is when you drink enough water so that your body feels good and works properly.

As we go through the lesson, keep an eye out for these keywords as they come up.

In today's lesson, we're going to answer three different questions.

Our first question is, why is food good for me? Our second question is, what types of food should I eat? And the last question that we're going to answer is, why is staying hydrated important? We're now going to make a start on our first learning cycle.

Why is food good for me? Eating healthy food helps our bodies in lots of different ways.

Izzy wants to ask you a question.

"Can you think of any ways that food helps your body?" Maybe you want to talk to the people around you.

Tell me or have a think to yourself.

Fantastic.

Food gives our bodies energy, and Andeep tells us that "Just like how a car needs fuel to drive, our bodies need food to grow, play, and learn!" Healthy foods like fruit, vegetables, and milk help our bones, muscles and brains to develop.

Laura says, "When I eat a healthy breakfast, my brain concentrates better at school!" This means to focus.

We're now going to do a check for understanding to see how you're doing with this learning cycle.

I would like you to answer the question, how can food help our bodies? Can you remember? A, food gives us energy to grow, learn and play.

B, food makes it difficult to concentrate at school, or C, food helps our body grow strong.

There might be more than one correct answer for this one, so think carefully and talk to the people around you or have a think to yourself.

How can food help our bodies? Well done if you said that A and C are correct.

Food helps our bodies because it gives us energy to grow, learn, and play, and it helps our body to grow strong too.

Well done if you've got this right.

Eating food also helps us keep healthy, and remember, this was one of our keywords from the start of the lesson.

Different types of healthy foods have vitamins and minerals that help our bodies fight off illness and stay strong.

Here are some examples of some foods with vitamins and minerals.

Oranges, broccoli, and fish all contain different vitamins and minerals.

Food can also help to repair our bodies if we're sick.

Laura says, "My mum always gives me a vegetable soup if I'm feeling unwell.

The vitamins in the soup help to make me feel better quicker." Let's do another check for understanding, but this time we're going to do a true or false question.

Healthy foods have vitamins and minerals that help our bodies fight off illness and stay strong.

What do you think? Is this true or is it false? Talk to the people around you.

Tell me or have a think to yourself.

Well done if you said that this is true.

It is true that healthy foods have different vitamins and minerals that help our bodies to fight off illness and stay strong.

Well done if you got this right.

This shows that you've been listening really carefully and paying good attention.

Let's move on to our first practise.

You're going to put your learning from this learning cycle into practise.

Andeep is talking about why food is good for us.

Andeep says that "food is good for us because it can help our bodies to repair themselves if we're sick." Can you tell your partner two more reasons why food is good for us? Thinking about what you've learned in this learning cycle.

Pause the video and we'll go through what you might have said in a few minutes.

Okay, let's have a look and see what your answer could have included.

Your answer could include that food gives our body energy to grow, learn and play.

Food helps our bones, muscles and brains grow strong.

Food is good for us because it keeps us healthy.

Different types of foods have vitamins and minerals that help our bodies to fight off illness and stay strong, and food can help prepare our bodies if we're sick or if we've hurt ourselves.

Well done if you and your partner said any of these reasons.

We're now going to answer our second question in our second learning cycle.

What types of food should I eat? This picture shows the different types of foods and amounts that we need to eat to stay healthy.

We've got fruits and vegetables, starchy foods, protein, high fat and sugar foods and milk and dairy.

The green group includes fruits and vegetables such as bananas, carrots, strawberries, peas, and sweet corn.

We should try to eat five different types of fruits and vegetables each day.

The yellow group includes starchy foods, and remember, this is one of our keywords too.

Starchy foods are made up of bread, pasta, potatoes, and cereal.

We should try to eat the same amount of starchy foods as we do fruits and vegetables.

We're now going to do another check for understanding to see how you're getting on.

Can you decide looking at these pictures, which food is a type of starchy food? Is it A, a broccoli, B, fish, or C pasta? Can you remember which one of these is a starchy food? Talk to the people around you.

Have a think to yourself or tell me.

Well done if you said that C is correct.

Pasta is a type of starchy food.

Can you remember any others? You might have said that potatoes and bread are also types of starchy food.

The pink group includes protein such as eggs, meat, fish and beans.

We should try to eat a smaller amount of protein than we do of fruit, vegetables and starchy foods.

The blue group includes dairy such as milk, yoghourt, cheese, or dairy alternatives.

We should eat a smaller amount of dairy than we do of fruit, vegetables, starchy foods and protein.

Let's do another check for understanding to see what you can remember.

Which food groups should we eat the most? Is it A, dairy and protein, B, fruit, vegetables and starchy foods, or C, starchy foods and dairy? Which of these food groups should we eat the most? Can you remember? Talk to the people around you.

Have a think to yourself or tell me.

Well done if you said B is correct.

The food groups that we should eat the most are fruit, vegetables and starchy foods.

Well done if you got this correct.

We don't need to eat food that is high in sugar or fats to stay healthy.

However, they're fine to eat occasionally as parts of a balanced diet and alongside regular exercise.

Izzy says, "I love having a sweet treat at the weekends!" Let's do another check for understanding.

Is this statement true or false? We should never eat sugary foods.

What do you think? Is this true or false? Talk to the people around you.

Have a think to yourself or tell me what you think the answer is.

Well done if you said that this is false, but why? You might have said that eating foods that are high in sugar or fats like chocolate and sweets is fine in small amounts as part of a balanced diet and alongside regular exercise.

Well done if you got this right or if you said something similar.

We're now moving on to our second practise task.

You've done a brilliant job so far, so keep it up with the fantastic listening and the fantastic focus.

For the first part of this task, I'd like you to create a healthy meal that includes different types of food groups.

Then I'd like you to label the food groups in your meal.

Laura says that you can use the picture on the screen to help you.

Pause the video and I really look forward to seeing your answers in a few minutes.

Okay, let's see what your healthy meal could look like.

One example could be protein, chicken, vegetables, peas, protein, eggs or starchy foods, noodles.

This is one example that you could have had.

You also could have had something like this where the protein is tofu, the vegetables are tomatoes and sweet corn.

The starchy foods are rice and potatoes.

Well done if your healthy meal looked a bit like this.

We're now going to move on to our third learning cycle and we're going to answer our third question: why is staying hydrated important? Drinking enough water each day to stay hydrated is important for our brains and it stops us from feeling tired or unwell.

Andeep says that "just like how plants need water to grow, we need water to stay healthy too." Water is the healthiest drink for our bodies.

Sugary drinks like juice or fizzy drinks might taste nice and they're fine to drink occasionally, but they don't keep our bodies hydrated, Izzy said.

Izzy tells us that "sugary drinks can actually make us feel more thirsty." Let's do another check for understanding.

Which of these drinks is the healthiest for our bodies? Can you remember? Is it A, fizzy lemonade, B, apple juice, or C, water? Pause the video, talk to the people around you.

Have a think to yourself or tell me what you think the answer is.

Well done if you said that C, water is correct.

Water is the healthiest drink for our bodies as it helps us to stay hydrated and it helps to keep our body healthy.

If we don't drink enough water, we can feel tired or find it difficult to concentrate at school or at clubs.

Unlike water, sugary drinks can give us a quick burst of energy, but then we can often feel more tired afterwards.

It's also particularly important to stay hydrated on hot days or if we're doing physical activities like running or playing sports.

Let's do another check for understanding.

When is it particularly important to drink water? Is it A, before bedtime, B, on hot days, or C, during physical activity? There might be more than one correct answer for this one, so think carefully.

You might want to talk to the people around you.

Have a think to yourself or tell me.

Well done if you said that B and C are correct.

It is particularly important to drink water on days when it's hot and when we're doing physical activity, for example, running or playing sports.

Well done if you got this correct.

We're now moving on to our final practise task.

Lucas is talking about staying hydrated.

Lucas says that "sugary drinks are better at keeping our bodies hydrated than water." Can you explain to your partner why Lucas is incorrect? Pause the video and we'll go through what you might have said in a few minutes.

I can't wait to see what you might have said.

Okay, let's have a look and see what you might have said to your learning partner.

You might have said that water is the healthiest drink for our bodies as it keeps us hydrated.

So Lucas is incorrect.

You might have said that sugary drinks can make us feel more thirsty or you might have said that sugary drinks can give us a quick burst of energy, but then we can feel more tired afterwards.

Well done if you said this or something similar.

We've now come to the end of our lesson and we're going to summarise the key pieces of learning that we've learned in today's lesson.

Today we've learned that eating healthy food gives us energy and it helps our bodies to grow strong.

Different foods have different vitamins and minerals and we need to eat a range of these foods to help us fight off germs and to stay well.

We should eat a balanced diet, including fruits and vegetables, starchy foods, protein and dairy.

Sugary foods can be eaten in a small amount occasionally.

And we've learned that drinking enough water each day is important to stay hydrated.

Sugary drinks can make us feel more thirsty and tired.

In today's lesson you might have found that you've got some worries or some questions.

If you do, it's really important to speak to a trusted adult.

This could be a parent or carer or it could be an adult that you trust at school like a teacher.

There are also some organisations and some resources on the screen who are there to support you too.

I've had an amazing time teaching you today's lesson.

I really hope you've enjoyed today's lesson and that you've learned a lot too, and I hope to see you in another lesson too.
