Hello, my name is Ms. Wroth.
Today we're going to be looking at the lesson my healthy food week.
This fits into the lesson unit physical health: how do I eat a balanced diet? Now, for this lesson, it is required for you to have a trusted adult present, so please make sure they are with you before you continue watching this video.
Great.
Have you got them with you? Great.
Let's make a start.
Today's lesson outcome is I can describe the range of foods I eat.
Let's begin at taking a look at our ground rules together, and we have some friends here to help us.
Laura says, "We should listen to others." And that means not interrupting when somebody else is speaking.
Andeep says we should respect privacy, and that means if somebody decides to share a story or their own experience, that we don't go and repeat it to others outside of this lesson.
Jacob says, "No judgement !" And that means if somebody does decide to share a story or their own experience, that we're not going to judge them because of it.
And Izzy says, "Choose your level of participation." And that means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout the lesson.
Here are today's keywords.
I will read them first to you, and then you can repeat them after me.
Are you ready? Balanced.
Diet.
Well done.
Balanced in this context means having different foods in the right amounts, and diet means the kinds of food a person eats.
Let's see if we can spot any of these keywords throughout the lesson.
Here is the lesson's outline, and we're going to begin with what foods should I eat to have a balanced diet? A balanced diet means eating different foods in the right amount.
Jacob says, "We can use this picture of the eatwell plate to remind us of the different food groups and amounts that we should be eating." Time for a check for understanding.
Fill in the missing word in this sentence.
A balanced diet means eating foods in the right amount.
Is that missing word A, similar, B, sugary, or C different? Hmm.

A balanced diet means eating foods in the right amounts.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said C, different.
A balanced diet means eating different foods in the right amounts.
It's important to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and starchy foods throughout our day.
Here are some examples of different fruits, vegetables, and starchy foods we can eat.
Edamame, oranges, pasta and couscous.
Our bodies need protein so that our muscles can grow strong.
We can get protein by eating fish, meat, and beans.
People who don't eat meat or fish can get protein by eating alternative foods, such as tofu and lentils.
Dairy foods are a smaller group on the eatwell plate.
Can you spot the dairy food section in the eatwell plate? Well done if you spotted that it was the blue section.
This means we need to eat small amounts of cheese, milk, and yoghourt to help our bones grow strong.
We can also have dairy alternatives, like almond milk or oat milk.
Time for a check for understanding.
Which food groups should we eat the most of? Is it A, fruit and vegetables, B, protein, or C, starchy foods? Hmm.
Which food groups should we eat the most of? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said A, fruit and vegetables and C, starchy foods.
Sugary foods like chocolate and sweets can be eaten in small amounts.
Eating too many sugary foods or drinking too many sugary drinks can be bad for our teeth and body.
Izzy says, "I love eating chocolate cake on special occasions, like birthday parties!" Me too, Izzy.
Jacob says, "There might be some days where we have more sugary or less healthy foods and drinks in our week.
For example, if we go to a birthday party, like Izzy, or on a special day out." Izzy says, "Eating and drinking less healthy choices on some days is fine.
However, to keep our body strong and healthy, we should try to have more healthy foods and drinks on other days." Time for a check for understanding.
True or false? We should never eat sugary foods or drink sugary drinks.
You can put your hands on your head if you think it's true, or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.
Hmm.
We should never eat sugary foods or drink sugary drinks.
True or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said false.
Sugary foods and drinks can be had on occasions in small amounts.
However, it's important not to have too much as this can be bad for our teeth and body.
Time for a task now.
Draw your own examples of different food groups to teach other children how to eat a balanced diet.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your picture could look like this.
I've got a picture of some edamame in the fruit and vegetables section.
I've got a picture of some tofu in the protein section, a piece of chocolate cake in the high fat and sugar foods section, a bottle of milk in the milk and dairy section, and some pasta in the starchy foods section.
Well done if your picture looks similar to mine.
We're now going to move on to the second and final part of this lesson.
What does a day of healthy food look like? Planning what we eat and making healthy choices can help us get everything our bodies need.
Jacob says, "Although our parents and carers often make our meals for us, there are still times where we can choose what to eat.
For example, we may be able to choose our snacks or what we have for lunch at school." We should try to eat a balanced breakfast each day.
Our breakfast should include a starchy food and fruits or vegetables.
Smaller amounts of protein and dairy foods are also a healthy choice to have for breakfast.
We should also try to eat healthy snacks throughout our day.
Some snacks that are made from processed fruit are high in sugar and should be eaten in small portions as a treat.
Breadsticks, crackers and real fruit and vegetables are healthier snack options that provide our bodies with nutrients, just like the picture on our screen now.
Food can be expensive and some meals can take time to prepare.
This means it can be tricky to eat a balanced diet.
Laura says, "My family do not always have time to prepare a big breakfast in the mornings.
I usually have time to have some toast and a banana.
This gives me the energy I need for school!" Time for a check for understanding.
True or false? It's easy to eat a balanced diet.
Hmm.
And you can put your hands on your head if you think it's true, or your hands on your shoulders if you think it's false.
Hmm.
It's easy to eat a balanced diet.
True or false? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said false.
Foods can be expensive and some meals can take time to prepare, which means it's not always easy to eat a balanced diet.
At lunch times, we should look at the choices we have in the canteen or dinner hall.
Choosing a meal that has a balance of starchy foods, fruits, and vegetables and protein will mean that our bodies will get the nutrients we need.
"My favourite meal to choose at school is tofu curry with rice and peas! This meal helps me to have a balanced diet," says Izzy.
It's important to drink enough water throughout the day and regularly check how hydrated we feel.
Keeping an eye on our water bottles is the best way to check how much water we have drunk.
Izzy says, "I try to drink a full water bottle at school, and then I refill it before my clubs in the evening." Well done, Izzy.
Time for a check for understanding.
How can we make sure that we stay hydrated each day? Is it A, by asking our pets if we have drunk enough water? B, by checking how much we have drunk from our water bottles.
Or C, by trying to drink a full water bottle at school.
Hmm.
How can we make sure that we stay hydrated each day? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said B and C.
We can make sure that we stay hydrated at school by checking how much we have drunk from our water bottles and by trying to drink a full water bottle at school.
Similarly to our lunch meals, a healthier dinner includes starchy foods, fruits, and vegetables, and protein.
Jacob says, "I like to help my family with our shopping list.
I often add fruit to the list for our dessert and ice cream for a special treat!" Time for a check for understanding.
What does a healthy dinner include? Is it A, starchy foods, B, vegetables or C, lots of dairy foods? Hmm.
What does a healthy dinner include? Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said A and B.
A healthy dinner includes starchy foods and vegetables.
Time for a task now.
With a partner, create a poster to explain what a healthy day of food looks like.
Include a tip on how to stay hydrated.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your poster could look like this.
Our breakfast should include a starchy food and fruit or vegetables.
For example, a piece of toast and an apple.
Our lunch and dinner should include a starchy food, fruits and vegetables and protein.
Smaller portions of protein and dairy is also good for us.
We can have a sugary snack sometimes, but it's good to make a healthy choice, like fruit or breadsticks most days.
We should try to drink a bottle of water at school.
Keep an eye on your water bottle throughout the day and refill it if it gets empty.
Well done if your poster has similar information to mine.
This brings us to the end of our lesson.
Here is a summary of everything that we've covered today.
A balanced diet includes eating different food groups in the right amounts.
We should eat plenty of starchy foods and fruit and vegetables throughout the day.
Our bodies need protein and dairy so that our bones and muscles can grow strong.
Alternative dairy foods are also good options.
