Hello, my name is Ms. Wroth.
Today we're going to be looking at the lesson "Keeping clean and healthy." This fits into the lesson unit "Staying safe and healthy: "How can I take responsibility for my health?" Now, for this lesson, it is required for you to have your trusted adult present.
So please make sure they're with you before you press play.
Today's lesson outcome is I can describe how germs are spread and how I can keep myself clean.
Let's begin by taking a look at our ground rules together, and we have some friends here to help us.
Laura says we should listen to others.
And that means not interrupting when somebody else is speaking.
Andeep says we should respect privacy.
And that means if somebody decides to share a story or their own experience, that we don't go and repeat it to others outside of this lesson.
Jacob says, "No judgement !" And that means if somebody does decide to share their own story or experience, that we don't judge them because of it.
And Izzy says, "Choose your level of participation." And that means you can decide if you simply just want to listen or if you want to share something throughout the lesson.
Here are today's keywords.
I will read them first to you and then you can repeat them after me.
Are you ready? Germs. Soap.
Well done.
Germs are tiny living things that can make us ill.
And soap means something we use to clean our body and kill germs. I wonder if we can spot any of these keywords throughout the lesson today.
Here is the lesson's outline, and we're going to begin with what are germs and how do they spread? Germs are tiny living things that can only be seen under a microscope.
Here is a microscope and here are examples of germs. Germs can spread illnesses.
Sofia says, "Even though germs are tiny, they can make us poorly if they get into our bodies." Lucas says, "That's why it's really important to try to reduce the spread of germs." Time for a check for understanding.
True or false? We can see germs with just our eyes.
You can give me a thumbs up if you think it's true, or a thumbs down if you think it's false.
Hmm, True or false? We can see germs with just our eyes.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said false.
Germs are tiny living things that can only be seen under a microscope.
Germs can be spread through the air.
If someone sneezes, coughs or sings while they are poorly, germs can travel through the air and land on surfaces.
There might be germs on the surfaces we touch.
For example, tables, storage boxes and toys.
Germs can also be found in some foods or in dirty water.
Lucas says, "Raw meat, food that isn't stored properly, or food older than its use by date could contain germs." Sofia says, "We should only drink water that is clean and has come from a drinking water tap." Time for a check for understanding.
Hmm, germs can be spread through? Is it A, the air, B, surfaces, or C, food stored properly? Hmm, germs can be spread through A, the air, B, surfaces, or C, food stored properly.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said A and B.
Germs can be spread through the air and surfaces.
Time for a task now.
Next to each image, describe how germs might be spread.
Try to use an example in your answers.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answers might include germs might spread through the air, for example, through coughs, sneezes, or singing.
Germs might spread through surfaces, such as tables or toys.
Germs might spread through some foods, for example, raw meat, food that isn't stored properly or food older than its use by date.
Germs might spread through dirty water or when we don't use a drinking water tap.
Well done if your answers were similar to mine.
We're now going to move on to the second part of our lesson.
How can we keep our bodies clean? We can only see germs with a microscope because they are too small to be seen with just our eyes alone.
Even if our hands look clean, there may still be germs on our skin.
Keeping our hands clean can help us to reduce the spread of germs. We should wash our hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
We should wash between our fingers, the backs and palms of our hands, as well as our wrists.
If we don't have access to water and soap, for example, when we're out and about, we can use hand sanitizer instead.
Sofia says, "I sing 'happy birthday to you' twice when washing my hands so that I wash for long enough!" Lucas says, "We must wash our hands with soap and then dry them properly after we go to the toilet." And Aisha says, "It's also important to wash your hands before eating, especially if you've been playing outside or touching a pet." Time for a check for understanding.
Hmm, we should wash our hands with soap and warm water for at least? Is it A, 20 seconds, B, five seconds or C, 10 seconds? Hmm, we should wash our hands with soap and warm water for at least A, 20 seconds, B, five seconds or C, 10 seconds.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said A, 20 seconds.
We should wash our hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
Keeping our bodies clean can also reduce the spread of germs so that we stay healthy.
We should wash our bodies regularly with a mild soap and warm water.
It's also important to wear clean underwear each day.
If we injure ourselves and get a cut or a graze, a trusted adult should help us clean the skin immediately.
Here's a picture of a graze and here's a picture of a plaster.
If needed, we can then wear a plaster to stop any germs getting into our body while our skin heals.
Aisha says, "Try putting your hand over your mouth when you cough and make sure you then wash your hands." Alex says, "If you can, sneeze into a tissue.
Don't forget to put the tissue in a bin and wash your hands too!" Even if we keep clean, it's normal for people to get poorly at times, no matter how much we try to avoid germs. Sofia says, "If our body doesn't feel right, we can speak to our trusted adults so that they can help us.
Time for a check for understanding.
I'd like you to look at each picture on the screen and decide which ways to keep ourselves clean and reduce the spread of germs are being shown in each image.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Okay, so for picture A, you should have said washing our hands.
For picture B, you should have said washing our bodies.
And for picture C, you should have said clean a cut or graze.
Then wear a plaster.
Well done if you got those correct.
Time for a task now.
Read each statement and put a tick if it is correct or a cross if it is incorrect.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Then we will go through the answers together and move on to the second part of this task.
Your answers should look like this.
For the first statement, it says, "I wash my hands with just warm water because warm water is enough to kill germs. I know this because my hands look clean afterwards." This statement is incorrect.
You should have ticked this second statement that says, "I wash my body regularly with warm water and soap." This statement is correct.
And for the third statement which says, "If you get a cut or graze, you should immediately put a plaster on it." This statement is incorrect.
Well done if your answers look like mine.
Let's move on to the second part of this task now.
For the statements that are incorrect, tell your partner what they should say so that they are correct.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task, and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
For the first statement, you might have said to your partner, "Washing hands with just warm water is not enough to kill germs. We must use soap.
Germs are so small we can't see them even if our hands look clean, so we need soap to make sure they're gone." And for this second statement, you might have said to your partner, "A cut or graze must be cleaned first and then a plaster put on if necessary." Well done if your answers were similar to mine.
We're now going to move on to the third part of our lesson.
How do we keep our teeth clean? As well as washing our bodies regularly, we must keep our teeth clean too.
Brushing our teeth twice a day, once in the morning, and then again before bed can help destroy germs inside our mouths.
We should brush our teeth for two minutes each time.
We can hum a song to help us time two minutes.
Young children should only use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
Try to brush using small circular movements and make sure that you get all the surfaces of your teeth.
Lucas says, "I use a little egg timer to make sure that I brush my teeth for two minutes." What a great idea, Lucas.
Aisha says, "I don't rinse my mouth out after I've brushed my teeth because toothpaste contains lots of helpful ingredients that make my teeth stronger the longer I leave it in there." Brushing our teeth regularly doesn't just destroy germs and keep our teeth strong, but freshens our breath too.
Time for a check for understanding.
True or false? We must brush our teeth twice a day for one minute each.
Mm, give me a thumbs up if you think it's true or a thumbs down if you think it's false.
True or false? We must brush our teeth twice a day for one minute each time.
Pause this video so you can have some thinking time.
Well done if you said false.
We must brush our teeth twice a day for two minutes each time.
Using an egg timer or humming a song can help us to brush for long enough.
Time for a task now.
Fill in the blanks to complete the sentences using the words germs, circular, twice and pea.
Pause this video so you can have some time to do the task and then we will go through the answers together.
Well done for having a go.
Your answers should include, we should brush our teeth twice a day.
We should brush using small circular movements.
We should use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
And brushing our teeth destroys germs and keeps our breath fresh.
Well done if your answers were correct.
This is the end of our lesson now, and here is a summary of everything that we've covered today.
Germs are tiny living things that can be spread easily and can make us poorly.
Germs can spread through the air, surfaces we touch some foods and dirty water.
Regularly washing our body and hands with warm water and soap reduces the spread of germs and helps us to stay healthy.
If we don't have access to soap, we should use hand sanitizer.
Cleaning cups and grazes and wearing a plaster if needed, can help stop germs getting into our body.
We should brush our teeth for two minutes twice a day.
