Hello, my name is Miss Willow and I'm going to be guiding you through today's learning.
Today's lesson is called Understanding Who Uses the Internet and it fits into our unit called Our Online Lives: How Do I Decide who to Trust Online? In today's lesson, we're going to be talking about some sensitive content and some content that some people might find upsetting.
For this reason, we recommend that you have an adult with you for this lesson.
I'm really looking forward to teaching you today, so let's make a start.
By the end of today's lesson, you will be able to explain who uses the internet and why it's difficult to tell who people are online.
Before we get started with today's lesson, we need to go over some ground rules.
These help to make sure that everyone stays safe and comfortable throughout today's lesson.
Laura says that we need to listen to others.
That means we're not going to interrupt other people if they're speaking.
Jacob says we need to not have any judgement.
That means we're not going to judge other people for what they feel, what they think, or what they've experienced.
Andeep says we need to respect each other's privacy.
That means we're not going to ask anyone any personal questions as this can make some people feel uncomfortable.
And Izzy tells us that we can choose our level of participation.
That means it's up to us how much we want to join in.
We're now going to go through the key words for today's lesson.
These are gonna pop up multiple times throughout the lesson, so as we go through the lesson, keep an eye out for them.
First, we've got the word online.
Online means using the internet.
Internet.
This is a network connecting digital devices across the world.
World wide web.
This is the websites on the internet.
And identity.
This is who someone is.
It's really important that we have a good understanding of what all of these words mean as we go through today's lesson.
Today's lesson is split into three learning cycles.
The first learning cycle is called where do users of the internet live? The second learning cycle is called who could we talk to online? And our last learning cycle is called can we tell who someone really is online? Okay, let's make a start on our first learning cycle, where do users of the internet live? Billions of people around the world are online.
There are lots of people from lots of different countries who use the internet and are online every day.
There are around 8 billion people in the world today.
Over half of the world's population use the internet.
This is a lot of people.
This means that most people in the world today use the internet and are online in some way.
Around 5.
5 billion people use the internet.
If you had 1 billion sweets and ate one every second, it would take you about 32 years to eat them all.
This goes to show how big just 1 billion is, let alone 5.
5 billion people.
If you had 5.
5 billion sweets and you ate one every second, it would take you about 174 years to finish them.
This shows how many people use the internet in the world.
Let's do a check for understanding.
Well done for your focus so far, you're doing a great job.
Is this statement true or false? Most people in the world do not use the internet.
What do you think? Pause the video, have a think, and maybe discuss this with the person next to you.
Well done if you said that this is false, but why? Over half of the world's population use the internet.
This is about 5.
5 billion people.
Well done if you remembered this.
Generally, people can use the internet anywhere in the world in order to access the world wide web.
Here we've got one of our keywords as well, world wide web.
Can you remember what that means? Well done if you remember that this means the websites on the internet.
Here, this diagram shows lots of different digital devices being used all over the world.
People can mostly access the internet anywhere in the world other than a few places.
Most countries in the world do have access to the internet.
This means that when people post online, they could be doing this from anywhere in the world.
As Jun says, "This is great for being able to learn about what's going on around the world and hearing lots of different opinions and experiences." Laura tells us that the world wide web is used by many people to talk to others and to learn about different things.
There are lots of positives to lots of people around the world being able to access the internet.
But it can be difficult to tell where people are using the internet from and people online are sometimes what we call anonymous, so they don't use their real name.
If someone is anonymous, this means that they have a hidden identity.
There are people who might not be honest about where they are posting from.
Here, someone who is anonymous online is saying, "I tell people that I'm posting from the UK, but I'm actually posting from America." People are not always going to tell the truth about where they are posting from.
Let's do another check for understanding.
Can you see which statement is true? A, it is easy to tell where people on the internet are posting from.
B, when people post online, they could be doing this from anywhere in the world, or C, the internet is only available in a few countries in the world.
What do you think? Pause the video, have a think, and discuss this with the person next to you.
Well done if you said that B is correct.
It is true that when people post online, they could be doing this from anywhere in the world.
A is incorrect because it is difficult to tell where people on the internet are posting from, and C is incorrect because most countries in the world have access to the internet.
Well done if you remember this and if you got it right.
We're now going to put your learning from this learning cycle into practise.
Well done for your hard work so far and keep it up.
I'd like you to fill in the blanks to show your understanding of where people who use the internet live.
At the bottom of the screen, there are some words which I'd like you to try and fit into the paragraph.
There might also be a couple of words that don't fit.
Can you see if you can complete the paragraph using the words at the bottom of the screen? Pause the video and I look forward to seeing you in a couple of minutes.
Okay, your completed paragraph should look like this.
There are billions of people online.
People who use the internet can live anywhere in the world.
It can be difficult to tell where in the world people are posting from and people might not always be honest about where they are posting from.
Well done if you spotted that the words hundreds and easy do not fit into this paragraph.
Well done on your amazing work so far.
Let's move on to our second learning cycle, who could we talk to online? Because so many people around the world use the internet, this means that we could talk to anyone who has access to the internet even if they live a really long way away from us.
As Sofia says, "People can go online to keep in touch with each other in different countries.
For example, if a family member lives somewhere else." If Alex was speaking to a family member online in a different country, it would feel the same as if they were using the internet to speak to Alex close by.
Here, Alex is on a video call with his aunt.
Because they're able to use the internet to communicate with each other, it feels just the same as if Alex's aunt was close by to Alex even though she's in a different part of the world.
Maybe you've done something similar to this before.
However, it's very difficult to know for certain where someone is talking to us from, especially as some people do not tell the truth.
For example, if they're anonymous.
Someone could say, "I live in the UK.
What about you?" But they might not be telling the truth and it would be difficult to tell that they're not telling the truth.
This is also why it's really important to only speak to people online who we know in real life.
For example, Alex earlier was using the internet to communicate with his aunt who he knows offline.
We can talk to friends that we know offline through our online devices, but it's really important that we always ask a trusted adult first.
Jacob says that trusted adults can always check that the person online is really our offline friend.
Let's do another check for understanding.
Who is correct? Andeep says, "We should only speak to people online who we know in real life, as some people can lie about where they're using the internet from." But Laura says, "We should only speak to people online if they say that they live in the same country as us." What do you think? Who is correct? Pause the video, have a think, and discuss this with the person next to you.
Well done if you said that Andeep is correct.
Andeep is correct because we should only speak to people online who we also know in real life as people are not always honest about where they're using the internet from.
Laura is incorrect because someone could say that they're from the same country as us and they might not be telling the truth.
This means that it wouldn't be a safe choice to speak to someone online who we don't know offline.
People of all ages can use the internet, which means that we could talk to someone younger or older than us even if we don't realise it.
Often, we don't even know how old someone really is online as people might not mention this or put this in their profile.
Often we won't know how old someone really is online unless they tell us.
And unfortunately even if they tell us, there's no way that we could tell that they're telling the truth.
Sam says that even if someone tells us their age, unless we know them in real life, we can't be sure that they're telling the truth if we only know them online.
Unfortunately, there are some people online who might pretend to be younger than they really are so that they can speak to children and pretend to be their friend.
This can cause children harm.
This anonymous person is saying, "I'm an adult and I tell children online that I'm the same age as them.
As they don't know me in real life, they can't tell that I'm not telling the truth." This is why we should not speak to people online who we don't know offline.
It's really important that if we are contacted by somebody online that we don't know in real life or that we haven't spoken to before, we should let a trusted adult know.
Jacob says that trusted adults can make sure that we stay safe online and that we have the right settings on digital devices so that online strangers can't contact us.
Let's do another check for understanding.
You're doing a fantastic job so far.
Okay, is this statement true or false? People do not always tell the truth about how old they are online.
What do you think? Pause the video, have a think, or discuss with the person next to you.
Well done if you said that this is true.
Unfortunately, people aren't always honest about how old they are online.
For example, they might pretend to be younger than they are or they might pretend to be older.
Now let's move on to your second practise task.
I'd like you to circle the speech bubble which shows when it would not be safe to speak to someone online, then I'd like you to explain your answer to your partner.
The first speech bubble says, "I want to speak to my grandparents online who live in a different country." The second speech bubble says, "I want to speak to someone that I've met online who says that they live in the same town as me." And the last speech bubble says, "I want to speak to a friend from school online." Can you circle the speech bubble which shows when it would not be safe to speak to someone online and explain your answer to the person next to you or have a think to yourself.
Pause the video and I'll see you in a couple of minutes and we can go through the answer.
You should have circled the speech bubble which says, "I want to speak to someone I've met online who says that they live in the same town as me." Your explanation with the person next to you might have said it would not be safe for this person to speak to the person they met online as they don't really know who this person is because they don't know them in real life.
Even though this person is saying that they live in the same town as them, they might not be telling the truth.
Well done if you got this right.
We are now moving on to our final learning cycle, can we tell who someone really is online? If someone speaks to us online, they could be anywhere in the world.
They could be any age and they could be any gender, so they could be male or female.
What do you think about what Lucas says? Lucas says, "It is easy to find out who someone is online, especially if they have pictures on their account and tell you their age and where they're from." What do you think about what Lucas says? Pause the video and have a think and you might want to discuss this with the people around you too.
Well done if you said that Lucas is incorrect.
It is really difficult to find out who someone is online as people can easily disguise how they look or lie about their age and their location.
This means they could lie about where they are.
People online can lie about or hide their identity.
Identity is who someone is and it includes their name, their age, their appearance, which means what they look like, their location.
It's almost impossible to know someone's real identity online unless we also know them offline.
When we know someone offline or in real life, we know someone's true identity.
Here, Izzy is saying, "I know Sam's honest about her identity because I know her offline." Let's do another check for understanding.
Whose identity can we be confident that we really know? A, a friend from school, B, a friend from an online game, or C, someone we spoke to online.
What do you think? Pause the video, have a think and discuss with the people around you.
Well done if you said A.
We can be confident that a friend from school is honest about their identity.
However, if someone from school or someone that we think we know offline messages us online, it's still important that we speak to a trusted adult.
They can check that they are being honest about who they are and that they're really the person that we think we know offline.
When someone is online, they can easily disguise their identity for different reasons.
This means cover up or change.
Someone who's anonymous online won't use their real name.
They might not use their real age.
They might not use their real appearance or a real photo of them, and they might not be honest about their location.
This means that they can hide and change their identity and sometimes this can cause harm.
Someone could use a different identity for themselves online, which isn't true.
For example, they could change the name that they use online.
They could change their age, their location, and they could use someone else's pictures to make it look like they're someone that they're not.
Here, someone's offline identity is that their name is Joe, they're age 19, they're from London and they're male, but their online identity could be different.
Joe could pretend to be someone called Hannah online by using someone else's photo, using a different name, a different age and a different location.
Even if someone online appears to tell us lots of information about themselves, we can still never be certain of their identity unless we also know them offline.
Here, Izzy has received a message from someone online.
The message says, "Hello, I'm Hannah.
I'm 13 and I live near you.
Would you like to be friends?" Izzy has made a safe choice.
She has said, "I don't know this person offline, so I'm not going to reply and I'm going to tell a trusted adult straight away." This helps Izzy to stay safe online as we don't know if Hannah is being honest about their identity.
As we can never tell who someone really is online, there are steps that we should always take to keep ourselves safe when we're online.
Alex says that we should never share personal information like our name and our age with someone that we don't know offline.
And Sofia says, "Always tell a trusted adult if someone you don't know messages you online.
They can help you to block and report the account so that they can't contact you again." We should also not reply to the online stranger as this wouldn't be a safe choice.
Let's do another true or false check for understanding.
Is this statement true or false? If someone has photos on their online account, we know their real identity.
What do you think? Pause the video, have a think, and maybe discuss with the people around you too.
Well done if you said that this is false, but why? People can use fake photos in their profile to make it seem like they're someone that they're not.
We don't know anyone's true identity unless we know them offline.
Well done if you got this right.
Let's move on to our final practise task.
I'm really proud of how well you're doing so far, so keep it up.
For the first part of the task, I'd like you to identify the three pieces of information on this profile that could be false.
This person online says, "Hi, I'm Aiden.
I'm 10 years old and I'm going to join your school soon.
I also live in the same city as you." I'd then like you to tell the person next to you or have a think to yourself what you should do if you receive this message online.
Pause the video and I look forward to seeing you in a few minutes with the answers.
Okay, let's have a look and see what you might have said.
You might have said that the following could be false, so they might not be true: his name, his age, his location, and the photo that he's used.
All of this information could be false.
It might not be honest.
Someone could be using this information to lie and disguise their true identity.
Well done if you got this right.
If you receive this message online, you might have said that you would not tell them any personal information, you wouldn't reply to the online stranger, you would tell a trusted adult straight away, and you would ask a trusted adult to help you to block and report the account.
Well done if you remembered this.
We are now going to summarise the key learning that we've learned in today's lesson.
In today's lesson, we have learned that billions of people around the world are users of the internet.
Most people around the world have access to the world wide web, which means the websites on the internet.
People of all ages can use the internet and some people online are not always honest about who they are.
They may lie about their name, their age, their location, and the photos.
It's impossible to know someone's real identity online unless we also know them offline.
If someone we don't know messages us online, we should not reply and we should always tell a trusted adult who can help us to block the account.
In today's lesson, we've talked about some tricky topics and you might find that you have some questions or some worries.
It's really important that you speak to a trusted adult about any worries that you have about anything that we've discussed in today's lesson.
There are also some organisations on the screen who are there to support you.
Well done for your fantastic hard work today.
I'm really proud of you and I've really enjoyed teaching you.
I really hope to see you again soon.
