Hello, my name is Miss Willow, and I'm going to be guiding you through today's learning.
Today's lesson is called Power in the Online Space, and it fits into our unit called "Our Online Lives: What should I share online?" In today's lesson, we're going to be talking about feeling unsafe, and we're also going to be talking about some content that some people might find upsetting.
For this reason, we recommend that you have an adult with you for this lesson.
If at any point you do become upset or uncomfortable, it's really important that you close the screen and that you go and speak to a trusted adult.
Okay, let's make a start on today's learning.
By the end of today's lesson, you will be able to describe where power comes from online, and you'll be able to explain how you can use your power online.
Before we get started with today's lesson, we need to go over some ground rules.
These help to make sure that everyone stays safe and comfortable throughout today's lesson.
Laura says we need to listen to others.
That means we're not going to interrupt other people if they're speaking.
Andeep says we need to respect each other's privacy.
That means we're not going to ask anyone any personal questions, as this can make some people feel uncomfortable.
Jacob says we need to not have any judgement.
That means we're not going to judge other people for what they think, what they feel, or what they've experienced.
And finally, Izzy says that we can choose our level of participation.
That means it's up to us how much we want to join in.
We're now going to go through the keywords for today's lesson.
These are gonna pop up multiple times throughout today's lesson, so it's important that we have a good understanding of what each word means.
First of all, we've got the word power.
In this context, this means having the ability to control or influence others.
Influence, this is the effect that somebody has on the way a person thinks or behaves.
Popular, this is how liked or admired someone is.
Status, this is how respected someone is because of the things they own or do.
And finally, the word anonymous.
This means unknown or with a hidden identity.
Today's lesson is split into three learning cycles.
Our first learning cycle is called, "Where does power come from online?" Our second learning cycle is called, "Why do people sometimes act differently online?" And our last learning cycle is called, "How should we use our power online?" Let's make a start in our first learning cycle, "Where does power come from online?" Someone who has power online is often able to control or influence others in some way.
This power can be used positively.
For example, it could be used to improve people's lives or to raise money for a good cause.
Power can also be used negatively, for example, to control someone else or to spread harmful ideas.
Someone popular online often has power.
If someone is popular online, for example, they have lots of followers, it is usually because lots of people like them, respect them, and they also listen to them.
Here we have Holly, she is popular online because she has 600,000 followers.
Someone who is popular online often has power to influence their followers to buy certain products.
Here we have Holly again.
She's saying, "I love this new shampoo," and her 600,000 followers are thinking or saying, "If Holly loves it, I'll buy it too." Someone who is popular online also has the power to influence their followers to have a certain opinion.
Here we have Holly saying, "I love this band," and her 600,000 followers might think or say, "If Holly loves them, they're probably really good." Someone who is popular online also has the power to influence their followers to behave a certain way.
This time Holly is saying, "I voted for this person." Her 600,000 followers might also do the same thing.
They might vote for the same person as Holly just because Holly voted for them.
Let's do a check for understanding to see how you're getting on.
Is this statement true or false? Power can only be used to negatively influence others.
Pause the video, tell the person next to you, tell me, or have a think to yourself.
Well done if you said false, but why? Power can be used to positively influence others as well as negatively influence them.
Well done if you got this right.
Power online can sometimes come from a person's status.
People with a high status online often have a lot of money, and they're often well respected because of what they do.
This might be because of their job or something that they have achieved.
Others might take their advice and believe their opinions as they're being influenced by the person with high status.
Power and money are also linked in lots of different ways.
People who have power online often have a lot of money, and money itself has the power to make some big changes.
When someone with a lot of money wants to do something, they're often able to just make it happen, giving them the power and influence to make decisions which may affect others.
People who are famous online have power because typically they are popular, they have a high status, and typically they have a lot of money.
This means that they often have a lot of power online as they can influence others even without meaning to.
Someone can also gain power online over time.
This is our Aarnav.
At the beginning, he might have zero followers.
He might then start to become popular, so here he has gained 100,000 followers.
As a result of him becoming more popular, he started to gain some power.
As he starts to earn more money, he gains more power, and this also increases his status.
Now he's become famous, gaining more power.
He has 600,000 followers, which means that he's become popular.
He's gained power, he's gained money, and his status has increased.
All of this means that he has gained more power.
Now, let's do a check for understanding.
People who are famous online have power because typically they are popular, have a high blank, have a lot of money.
What is the missing word after have a high? Pause the video, tell the person next to you, tell me, or have a think to yourself.
Well done if you said that the missing word is status.
People who are famous online have power because typically they are popular, have a high status and have a lot of money.
Well done if you got this right.
Now, let's put your learning from this learning cycle into practise.
I'd like you to identify three reasons why Henry has power online.
Henry says, "I have 800,000 followers online.
I am able to earn a lot of money through posting online and I'm also invited to lots of celebrity events.
I'm also the CEO of a business, so people ask me for advice." What are the three reasons why Henry has power online? Pause the video, tell the person next to you, tell me, or have a think to yourself.
Okay, let's have a look and see what you might have got.
You might have said that Henry has 800,000 followers online, which means that he's popular.
You might have said that he also has a lot of money from posting online.
He is famous because he's invited to celebrity events.
And he is a CEO, so he has a high status.
All of these reasons mean that Henry has power online, we're now going to move on to our second learning cycle, "Why do people sometimes act differently online?" People have the power to pretend to be somebody else online.
They can use fake photos, videos, and names in order to be someone they're not.
They can use this fake identity to trick other people into trusting them, which could cause the other person harm.
Lucas says, "We should always be cautious of anyone online as they could be pretending to be someone else." Unfortunately, there are some adults who can harm children by pretending to be their friend or by pretending to be someone who's the same age as them.
Jacob says, "If someone tries to be our friend online and we don't know them offline, it's really important to tell a trusted adult." People can also pretend to be someone that you trust in order to make you do something for them.
For example, they might pretend to be a friend who needs money, but they're not telling the truth.
Someone anonymous online, meaning someone unknown or with a hidden identity, they might say to you, "I'm your friend.
I just needed to get a new account.
Can you send me some money?" Even adults can make mistakes online.
For example, they might believe that they're talking to a celebrity or a family member when this isn't true.
Someone anonymous might say, "I'm your favourite celebrity.
I don't have money for the flight home.
Can you send me some?" It's important to remember that anyone we only know online and not in real life is not someone that we can trust to keep us safe.
Now, let's do a check for understanding.
Why might someone pretend to be someone else online? A, to harm someone they've met online, B, to avoid using up their internet data, or C, to trick someone into doing something for them.
Pause the video, tell the person next to you, tell me, or have a think to yourself.
Well done if you said A and C.
Someone might pretend to be someone else online to harm someone that they've met online or to trick someone into doing something for them.
Well done if you got this right.
People can behave differently online often because the internet offers everyone the ability to be anonymous.
As anonymous says, someone who is anonymous does not use their real name or their photos online.
This means that no one online knows who they really are.
Being anonymous online often changes people's behaviour.
People can also act differently online because they can worry less about consequences for what they do or say if they are anonymous so no one knows who they really are.
Someone who is anonymous might say, "I don't like your hair," or "Your music is rubbish," which they might not say if people knew who they were.
Being anonymous gives people the power to say or do things that they normally wouldn't if people knew who they were.
People can also use the power of being anonymous to spread harmful ideas or opinions.
For example, some people choose to be anonymous online because it allows them to openly discriminate against others.
Discrimination means treating someone unfairly because of their characteristics, for example, because of their gender, their sexual orientation, or their ethnicity.
What do you think about what Laura says? Laura says, "If you are anonymous and you post online, there aren't any consequences for what you say or what you do." Pause the video and have a think.
Do you agree with Laura or do you think something different? Laura is incorrect.
Well said if you said the same thing.
Even if people are anonymous online, they can still face consequences for their actions.
People can be banned from social media platforms for their action, and in some cases, they can also be in trouble with the law.
Using anonymous accounts to post unkind content is always wrong.
Anonymous accounts can be helpful if they're used for the right reasons.
For example, if you want to keep your personal information safe, but we should always be cautious of anyone online that we don't know offline.
If someone is anonymous, then we don't know who they are, and anyone online could be pretending to be someone else.
Now let's do another check for understanding.
Is the statement true or false? People can face consequences for what they post online even if they are anonymous.
Pause the video, tell the person next to you, tell me, or have a think to yourself.
Well done if you said that this is true.
It is true that people can face consequences for what they post online even if they are anonymous and no one knows who they are.
Well done if you got this right.
Now let's put your learning from this learning cycle into practise.
With the person next to you, I'd like you to explain why someone might do the following, why they might want to pretend to be someone else online, and why they might be anonymous online.
Pause the video and I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Okay, your explanations might look a little bit like this.
Someone might pretend to be someone else online because they want to cause harm or because they want to trick someone into doing something for them, for example, to give them money.
Someone might decide to be anonymous online because they want to protect their personal information because they want to discriminate against others or because they want to say or do something that they normally wouldn't.
Well done if you got this right or if you had something similar.
We're now moving on to our final learning cycle.
You are doing a fantastic job so far, so keep it up.
Our final learning cycle is called, "How should we use our power online?" Everyone has power online, including children.
When we learn how to stay safe online, we increase the amount of power that we have because we are less likely to be negatively influenced by others.
Here, anonymous is saying, "Do you want to be friends?" But Izzy is using her power to say, "This doesn't feel right.
I'm going to tell a trusted adult." Sofia asks, "How can children use their power online?" Children can use their power online by saying no when they don't want to do something.
They might say no to friend requests, to posting online when they don't want to, and they might say no to giving away their personal details.
These are all examples of how children can use their power online.
Children can also use their power by turning off their digital device when they don't want to be online.
They can also take screenshots which means pictures of the screen if someone makes them uncomfortable online.
They can also tell a trusted adult if they have any worries about being online, and they can use their power by reporting and blocking people online or asking a trusted adult to help them do this.
Children can also tell the police if they've been harmed online or if they're worried about being harmed.
The police can help you if you have worries about your own safety, it can be helpful to talk to a trusted adult first.
Let's do another check for understanding.
Is this statement true or false? Children are powerless online.
What do you think? Pause the video, tell the person next to you, tell me, or have a think to yourself Well done if you said that this is false.
But why? Children do have power online.
For example, they have the power to say no, to turn off their digital device, to take screenshots, to report and block accounts, and tell trusted adults or the police if something is harming them online.
Well done if you got this right.
We have the power to protect each other online.
We can protect others by encouraging them to use their own power and helping them to learn what this means.
We can protect others by supporting them in talking to a trusted adult if they have any worries about being online.
we can also remind them of the risks of being online, for example, other people being anonymous.
However, we do also have the power to harm others with what we do online.
We can harm others if we hurt their feelings, if we discriminate against them, or if we pretend to be someone we're not online.
We can also harm others if we don't tell a trusted adult if we know that a friend is at risk of harm.
We can use our power by thinking carefully about how we present ourselves online and thinking about who we trust online.
Alex says, "We should be anonymous online to protect our identity and be aware that we can't trust anyone that we don't know online." We also can't trust anyone online.
if we don't know them offline.
Andeep says that we should remember that people can pretend to be anyone online, and this can result in us being tricked.
Let's do another check for understanding.
I'd like you to finish the sentence.
To protect others online, we can, A, tell a trusted adult if someone is at risk of harm, B, remind them of the risks of being online, or C, discriminate against others online.
Pause the video, tell the person next to you, tell me, or have a think to yourself.
Well done if you said that A and B are correct.
To protect others online, we can tell a trusted adult if someone is at risk of harm, and we can also remind them of the risks of being online.
Well done if you got this correct.
We're now moving on to our final practise task.
Well done for your hard work so far.
Using each of these icons, I'd like you to describe two or three ways that we can use our power online.
Pause the video and I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Okay, let's have a look and see what you might have said.
You might have said to say no to friend requests that we don't want, to say no to posting things we don't want to, or to say no to giving away personal details.
You might have said to report and block people online to tell a trusted adult if we have any worries about being online, to take screenshots if someone makes us feel uncomfortable, or upset, or worried.
We can also turn off our devices when we don't want to be online.
You might have also said that you can protect others by encouraging them to use their power online.
You might have said we can support others to talk to a trusted adult about any worries that they have online, and you might have said that we can remind others of the risks of being online, such as other people being anonymous.
Well done if you got these correct answers or if you had something similar.
We're now going to summarise the key learning from today's lesson.
In today's lesson, we've learned that there are people with power online often because they're popular, have a high status, or have money, or fame.
We've learned that people with power can influence others both positively and negatively online.
We've learned that people can be anonymous and pretend to be someone else online, which can trick people and cause people harm.
Children have power online.
For example, they can turn off their digital devices, deny friend requests, block accounts, and protect others by telling them the risks of being online.
We've also learned that we can harm others online, for example, by discriminating against them and pretending to be someone we're not.
This is never okay, so it is always wrong to harm other people online.
In today's lesson, we've talked about some tricky topics.
If you have any worries about anything we've discussed in this lesson, it's important to speak to a trusted adult.
There are also some organisations on the screen who are there to support you.
Well done for your fantastic hard work today.
I'm really proud of you and I hope to see you again soon.
