Hello, I'm Mr. Nicholson.
And today we're going to be looking at forced marriage.
This is a very sensitive topic, so if you want to talk to somebody beforehand, please do so now.
Pause the video and have a chat with a trusted adult or if at any time during the lesson you want to stop it and talk again, please do so.
It's important when we're handling these sensitive topics that you feel comfortable doing it.
When you're ready, carry on with the lesson.
Before we start this lesson, please ensure you've got an exercise book or a piece of paper on which to write and a pen.
We're making some notes to look at what forced marriage is and looking at a scenario around forced marriage, so it's important you write down what you think and what you think should happen in the scenario we're going to look at.
If you don't have your pen and piece of paper or book now, please go and get one.
Before we start the lesson, please ensure you've done your introductory quiz.
It's linked clearly to what we're going to do in this lesson and will help you understand or come to terms with some of the issues we're dealing with.
You'll also then look at what is honor-based violence.
Before we move on to look at the examples of honor-based violence.
And therefore, how we report it.
Finally, I'd like you to do your exit quiz at the end so that you know exactly what you've done and you can reflect on your learning.
In this lesson, there are two keywords we're going to use.
But rather than give you the definitions, I'd like you to spend some time thinking about them and what you think they are.
When I've gone through what these two words are, I'd like you to pause the video and write down in your notes what you think they are before we check our understanding of them.
The first one is forced marriage.
So what is a forced marriage? And the next one is an arranged marriage.
What is an arranged marriage? Pause the video now and write down what you think these two words mean.
When you're ready, press play and we'll carry on.
Now you've come up with your own definitions, let's see what they actually are.
A forced marriage is where one or both partners do not consent to the marriage.
And the important word here is consent.
And where duress is involved.
So the idea is they are forced into it.
Duress is a form of being forced into something.
An arranged marriage is where the families are involved in choosing a partner for the child but they, the child, consents to the wedding.
So forced is without consent and arranged is with consent.
If you need to add anything to your own definitions, please do so now.
Now think about what I've just said about consent.
Here's a question I want you to think about and think about your reason of your answer.
In the UK, which form of marriage is illegal, forced or arranged marriage? Once again, think about what I said earlier.
Maybe pause the video, jot down a few ideas and when you're ready, let's carry on.
Thinking about the idea of consent, here is the answer.
All forms of forced marriage are illegal in the UK because all marriages require consent to be given freely, i.
e.
, without duress.
An arranged marriage involves consent but a forced marriage does not.
That's why a forced marriage in the UK is illegal.
Research has shown that these four groups are the most likely to be forced into a marriage.
People who are LGBTQ+, the disabled, someone who refuses to marry and the bereaved.
What I'd like you to do is to pause the video and make some notes for me in your book or on the piece of paper as to why you think these four groups are most likely to be forced into marriage.
Think clearly about who would be involved in this and the reasons why.
When you're ready, press play and we'll look at some of the reasons that are given for these four groups being the most common who are forced into marriage.
You'll have come up with your own ideas but here's some you may which to add in.
People who are LGBTQ+ may be forced into marriage 'cause many people would see marriage as a being a cure for their lesbianism, bisexuality, homosexuality, transgender or queer status.
Therefore, that's an important thing for some people to cure it, which is why they are forced into marriage.
The disabled may not be able to give consent to marriage.
And therefore, they are forced into it without them being able to say yes or no.
Some people refuse to marry who their family wants them to and therefore, they are forced into it.
And the bereaved, they may be forced into some form of forced marriage because in some cultures and traditions, the father figure is all important and they may require a male to enter the family.
If you need to, as I say, add these to your own ideas.
But these are some of the things that we'll be thinking about as we go through this lesson, so it's important that you get this down now before we move on.
Here's a question I want you to think about.
We've looked at the four groups that are most likely to be forced into marriage but what can the outcomes of a forced marriage be? Now, this is all about your own ideas now.
So when we move on, I'm going to ask you to look at this in three headings.
Think carefully what they are and then write down your own ideas.
And as I mentioned a moment ago, these are the three areas I want you to think about.
Health, education and employment.
And to help you, there's a question for each one.
So for health, what would be the impacts on mental and physical well-being? In terms of education, what will forced marriage be on the person at school because it's likely to happen to people who are school aged, as well as older people.
So what would be the impact on their education as a whole? And also, what would the impact be on work and the family in terms of employment? These are your own ideas, so please think carefully about them and jot them down.
When you finish that, press play and continue with the lesson and we'll look at what you've written.
Here are some possible answers for you in the areas of health, education and employment.
In terms of health, remember, we mentioned mental and physical well-being.
Early pregnancy, self-harm, depression and attempted suicide are just some of the health impacts that a forced marriage can have on an individual or even onto some parts of the wider family if they did not want it to happen.
If somebody is school aged, they will miss lessons due to absence and they may not be able to attend extracurricular events where they learn about themselves and how they work with other people.
In terms of employment, there may be time off work or they may not be allowed to go to work.
So by being forced into marriage, they may have to give up their job.
In that sense, through all of these three, there are going to be big impacts on what people feel, do and believe.
And it's important that you remember what these are.
So if you need to write any down, please do so now.
And then we can move on in the lesson.
I'd now like us to bring all our learning together in a short paragraph about forced marriage.
I want you to do two things here.
Explain what a forced marriage is and use that definition we came up with earlier but include the concept of consent.
And then explain the impact of a forced marriage.
Use those ideas of health, education, employment and give examples.
This'll really help show your understanding in this topic so far.
Pause the video and when you're ready, carry on.
And here's one I completed earlier.
Notice I've mentioned consent as being a legal requirement for all marriages in the UK and that's what makes a forced marriage illegal.
There is no consent.
But I've compared this with an arranged marriage where there is consent.
That really shows my understanding of the topic area.
And I've taken some of the examples from the three ares of impact that forced marriage may have.
By doing this, I've shown once again my understanding of the area and the impact it has on people.
If you need some time to refine your own ideas, please do so now.
When you're ready, we can carry on.
Here's a question I want to move on with you now.
What can be done to stop forced marriage? And in this section, keep in mind that idea of consent and what makes a marriage legal in the UK.
I want to start off with you thinking about a true or false statement.
The statement here is you have a duty to tell someone of your concerns.
True or false? Think about the idea of the law.
Pause the video so you can think about it and when you're ready, we can move on.
So press play and we'll see what the answer is.
But remember, this is a true or false statement but think about the law and think about the reasons you'd give to say whether it's true or false.
So let's look at the answer.
The answer here is true.
You do have a duty to tell someone of your concerns if you believe forced marriage is happening, about to happen or has happened and the reason is it's illegal and therefore, we must report it.
Ring 999 and say to the emergency because you believe somebody's at risk of forced marriage or tell a trusted adult and they will do it for you.
Ensure that you always do this.
An illegal act must be stopped.
And in British law, forced marriage is an illegal act.
As I mentioned earlier, you must tell the police.
And they can apply for an FMPO or a forced marriage protection order.
This will support the person at risk of being forced into marriage and will remove them from the.
As I said earlier, you must inform the police.
They will apply for an FMPO.
This is a forced marriage protection order.
Maybe you want to jot that down in your notes.
This will support the person at risk and remove them from the situation.
They are being taking away from being forced into marriage because they've not given their consent.
And therefore, this illegal act will be handled by the police.
You could talk to them alone.
They will be scared but tell them you must tell the police and if you're in school, speak to the DSL or the designated safeguarding lead and they must refer it to Children's Services.
If they're over 18, then they will also inform the police.
In this way, the forced marriage will be stopped and support will be given for the person about to be forced into marriage.
But always remember, you must tell somebody.
Never ever think about this as being a confidential issue.
It's something that is illegal and we have a duty to tell somebody about it.
Ensure that you know who the DSL is in your school so that you can go to them with any concerns or issues you may have.
This is something to remember above all things.
Forced marriage is a criminal offence.
The law came in in 2014.
Within that, there is that duty to tell somebody you have concerns about a forced marriage about to happen.
Remember to tell somebody, either the police or somebody in school, preferably the DSL who will do something about it and inform Children's Services.
As I said before, do not keep it quiet and do not assume that you can keep it confidential.
Here's a scenario I want you to read.
And you'll need to pause the video to do so.
In a moment, I'm going to ask you to do some work with this one but make sure you've got all the information from this scenario that you need before you move on.
Read it maybe two or three times to make sure everything is clear about what's going on in this scenario.
And when you're ready, press play and there'll be an activity for you to do.
Here's the activity I'd like you to do.
How to support someone at the risk of forced marriage.
Explain the routes to help someone at risk of forced marriage, what you should never do and why you should report it.
Link it back to the scenario you just read.
So pause the video, complete this activity in your notes and then when you're finished, press play and resume.
Here are some ideas I've thought of, the idea of a criminal offence, report it to the police or somebody in authority, maybe the DSL within school.
They will then report it to Children's Services if the person is under 18.
Never assume that you can be confidential about it and never mediate.
It's a criminal act and you should never put yourself in harm's way.
If you need to add anything to your own account, please do so now.
Thank you for taking part in this lesson.
If anything's upset you or you need to talk to somebody, please do so.
And if you want to share your work with Oak National, we're really pleased to see it.
Now please go and complete the quiz questionnaire and I'd like to say from me goodbye.
