Hello, and welcome to our final lesson in this unit.

Today's lesson, we'll be exploring wider family relationships.

I'm Mr. Clarke and I'm really glad to have you back with me today.

I can't wait to explore this topic with you and learn so much together.

With that in mind, let's get on with today's lesson and lets start learning about wider family relationships.

To be able to fully participate in today's lesson, you're going to need an exercise book or a piece of paper and a pen.

If you haven't got that near you or got it with you already, then don't worry, just pause this video, go and get what you need and then come back.

You've already started today by taking part in our introduction quiz.

I really love seeing how much you've learned from previous lessons through this.

Through the rest of today's lesson, we're going to be exploring why do we have families? And what purpose they serve in terms of our wellbeing and growth.

We'll also look at the wider family and the role that plays before then going on to looking at how family supports our wellbeing.

At which point you will then be armed and ready to take on your final exit quiz of this unit.

Which I've no doubt you're going to do absolutely amazing at and I can't wait to celebrate your success by seeing your amazing results.

There are a few key words for today's lesson and they are, Wellbeing, which can be defined as how people feel and how they function both on a personal and a social level.

Our other key word is Committed Relationship, which is a serious and lasting romantic relationship with someone.

Now, I always suggest that it's a great idea to make sure that you've got these key words written down on your piece of paper or exercise book, as we will talk about them throughout today's lesson.

If you need to do that, just pause the video now, get it written down and then press play when you're ready to carry on.

Now, I don't mean to alarm you, but an alien has just landed on earth, no jokes this is real, you can see a picture of it there, this is absolutely real an alien landed on earth and you, lucky you have been tasked by the UK government to tell the alien what the point of family is.

They know absolutely nothing.

So they want to know why do human beings have a family? And what do they offer us? For example, in terms of our security and what we've talked about in previous lessons.

So you have now got to come up with all the reasons behind why we have family and the purpose that they serve to us as human beings and the alien going to be ready to listen to your responses very soon.

So once you've got your ideas down, I want you to then press play and we'll get ready to tell the alien.

Amazing, so while you've been gone, the aliens have multiplied, they've gathered round, ready to hear your responses.

So let's see what you've got shall we? You could have put any of the following reasons.

They help us with our basic needs in terms of food and clothing and shelter.

They provide security and stability, including during times of change so maybe starting a new school.

They give us a sense of belonging and our self-esteem linking back already to the idea of wellbeing and our mental health family play a big part in that.

They give us love and emotional support when we might be worried or unhappy or going through difficult times.

They keep us safe, through our health care, our teaching, our road safety, all of those things that our parents teach us at a young age that we remember and learn from.

And they also help us learn new things and discover our talents and show us how to behave in different situations.

So hopefully you've got some of these ideas down and I'm sure many others of your own.

Now the alien were super impressed.

They were really impressed by your responses and what we came up with together.

So, you've not only impressed, just a few aliens, but you've impressed the Chief Alien.

So they now want you to create a poster that could bring together all of the key points that we've just discussed.

And then your poster is then going to be taken back to their home planet, wherever that may be, to show others.

So pause this video now to create your poster that really highlights and shows what family is and the purpose of it to human beings.

We're now going to take part in a short activity, titled My Circles of Support.

You're going to create your circles of support by filling in the people you know, and how close you feel to them.

The closer you put them to your name or Me in the middle of your circle, the closer they are to you in your life.

They might be friends, families, or other professionals.

Pause this video now to complete the task and when you've completed it and you're ready to carry on, just press play when you're ready.

How did you find that? If you need some help thinking of some more names or people in your life that you might add to your circles of support, please see my example here.

Here, you can see I've got people such as my friend, a scout leader, teacher, neighbour, and also included are professionals in my life, such as the school nurse, the doctor or other family members, such as my cousin.

Have a look now at your circles of support and see if you can add any more to it that you hadn't thought of before.

We've done a real big couple of tasks there, so let's take a moment to just reflect.

How is your wider family important to you? Have a look at perhaps the family relationship zones that you've just created, have a look back at the poster you created of why family is important to human beings and perhaps you as well.

And think why is your wider family important to you? So perhaps your aunties, uncles, cousins, those are family members you don't live with.

Why and how are they important to you? Perhaps at this point, you might want to jot a few ideas down.

Once you've taken a moment to reflect on this question, press play, and we'll continue with the lesson.

We're now going to look at a short scenario together, and then you're going to have a task based on the scenario.

Here is Chelsea, Chelsea has two mums. One of our mums has a step cousin who lives in the United States.

Chelsea considers her to be an auntie to her, her auntie, Annie.

Chelsea only sees her once a year.

However, they have formed a special bond and Chelsea often telephones our auntie Annie for advice, or if she is feeling low.

Your task now is to think about what might the benefit be of having a wider network of family, or those you consider like family to turn to, if you are struggling.

Pause this video now and jot down your ideas, and when you've had a moment to think, and you've got some ideas down, press play and we'll carry on with today's lesson.

Welcome back to the lesson today.

You are asked to think about what might the benefit be of having a wider network of family or those you consider like family to turn to if you are struggling.

Some of the possible answers you might've written down included, feeling more supported, giving you a wide variety of opinions and experiences, which you can turn to, or perhaps if you're feeling embarrassed to speak to those closest to you, you might feel an extended family member is easy to approach.

Did you have any of the same answers as I did? Supporting wellbeing.

Now wellbeing and our mental health is a really important topic.

It's so important that you are aware of how your wellbeing works and what makes you feel positive and happy, but also what doesn't do that? So that you're aware of how you can support yourself.

So we're going to look specifically at how family impacts wellbeing.

So why do we need healthy relationships? What's the point in it? Surely just don't have any relationships and we'll all be fine.

Why do we need healthy relationships? Jot down a few answers to this response, and when you're ready, well press play.

Why do we need a healthy relationship? Surely it would just be much easier to forget them all, have no relationships and we'll all be happy, right? Have a think then about this question, why do we need healthy relationships? Try and jot down a few ideas and when you've got those press play again and we'll explore some together.

So which of these then do you think are attributes of a healthy relationship? Which of these do you think? Point to the ones that you think, link to a healthy relationship, in three, get ready, which ones are going to be, two and one.

What do you think then? Which of these are attributes of a healthy relationship? Let's see if you're right then.

The answer is all of them.

And that's why having positive relationships are so important because they link to friendship and support and honesty and trust and love and compromise, and not only are those attributes of a health relationship, they're also really important skills for life, for us to learn, and we only learn those by being exposed to them and being part of these amazing, healthy relationships.

So how do all of these attributes and everything we've talked about, link to our mental health and wellbeing? Have a think about that question, maybe jot down a couple of ideas and when you've thought about it, press play again and we'll carry on and look at some responses to that.

All of those things are so important to our wellbeing and mental health.

Without love and happiness and support and friendship, we would have no one to go to when times get tough and things seem difficult.

All of those are really important and so much more.

You can see on your screens now, some love hearts that have been decorated with key words and all of the things that we've talked about in terms of attributes of healthy relationships.

I'd like now you to have your own to go.

Draw an outline of a heart and fill creatively with all the things you've learned about linking to families, and their link to wellbeing and leading positive lives.

Perhaps you might want to draw a picture in your love heart, or maybe fill it with key words of lots of different colours, however you want, this is your time to be as creative as you want to be.

It can sometimes be very hard to ask for help if we feel unsafe with somebody in our family, because we might care about that family member, or we could even be worried about what other people might say.

But all of us have the right to help and should trust our judgement if you believe you or anyone is at risk.

There are a lot of amazing organisations or places that you can go to for support.

Here are a few.

Trusted Adults, Childline, NSPCC and of course the police.

Some of these, will allow you to go to them anonymously, which means you don't need to disclose who you are if that's what you're worried about.

Amazing well done for all the credible, creative work you've all completed today.
