Hello, my name is Mrs. Mehrin, and I am really looking forward to learning all about weather in winter with you.
Let's begin.
Welcome to today's lesson from the unit Seasonal Changes Autumn and Winter.
Your learning outcome today is, I can describe the weather in winter.
Now I know that sometimes learning can be a little bit challenging, but that's okay because it just means that we are going to work really hard together and we're going to learn lots of great new things.
Let's start.
So we're going to do a bit of my turn, your turn.
My turn, weather.
Your turn.
My turn, season.
Your turn.
My turn, winter.
Your turn.
My turn, temperature.
Your turn.
My turn, thermometer.
Your turn.
Fantastic.
Well done.
So these are all of your keywords that we are going to be using today.
Now next to these keywords you'll see some definitions, but I don't want you to worry about these because I am going to be referring to all of these throughout today's lesson.
Now our learning today is split into two parts.
Let's begin with the first part, Weather in Winter.
Now, it's New Year's Eve and Jacob and his dad are preparing for the new year by looking at photos of all the exciting things that they've done this year.
And in the photographs they notice that the weather changes over time.
So here we have a picture of a road in April, the seaside in August, and a field of pumpkins in October.
Now, why do you think that the weather has changed over time in all of these photographs? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
Now the reason why the weather looked different in each of those pictures is because it was taken in different seasons.
And remember when we learned about seasons, we learned that different seasons bring different types of weather.
Now, can you remember the name of each of these seasons? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fabulous.
Well done.
So we have got spring, summer, autumn and winter.
Now, Jacob looks at the weather in these seasons.
So we've got spring and we've got summer.
Now what do you observe? So remember when we observe something, we look at it really closely.
So I'll give you some time now to have a really good look at these two pictures.
If you need to, you can pause the video here and you can come back once you're ready.
Otherwise I'll give you five seconds, off you go.
Fabulous.
Well done.
So I observe that there are a lot more plants in spring and a lot more trees as well.
But in summer the sun is shining really brightly and these blue skies and not that much cloud.
Now Jacob looks at the weather in the season.
So here we have autumn and winter.
And what do you observe? So I'd like you to pause the video here and have a really good close look at these two pictures.
What do you see in these pictures? Okay, off you go.
Fabulous.
Well done.
So I can see in autumn there's a lot of leaves on the ground and there are lots of different colours.
We've got orange and brown and yellow and we've got some that are green.
And I can see that the boys are holding an umbrella, which means that it must have been raining.
Now in winter it's not been raining but I can see snow on the ground, and I can see that there aren't that many leaves on the bushes or on the trees.
Now Jacob observes that the weather is often different in each season and he says, "Have you observed "what the weather is like in each season?" Well we did, didn't we? So we said in spring it was a little bit sunny.
However, in summer the sun was really bright.
In autumn, it was raining, and in winter, there was snow.
So true or faults.
The weather is often different in each season, is that true or false? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer, off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
The answer is true.
Now, I think this because A, we can observe the weather over time or B, each year has four seasons.
I'll give you five seconds to think of your answer, off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
The answer is A.
I think this because we can observe the weather over time.
So it's New Year's day.
What is the first month of the year? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Fabulous.
Well done.
So the first month of the year, it's January.
Now, which season is January in? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
In January, it's winter.
Now Jacob goes for a walk with his family and observes the weather, and Jacob says, "It's really chilly in the park today.
"The ground is covered in frost.
"The sky looks blue, "but the wind feels so cold".
Now, what weather can you see here? So I'll give you five seconds to have a think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
So you might have said that you can see snow as well.
Now winter comes after autumn, the weather turns colder and it's sometimes frosty, snowy and icy.
Now what is the weather like where you are today? I'll give you five seconds so you can have a quick think about that and then I will share what it's like for me today.
Okay, off you go.
Fabulous.
Well done.
So today it's been quite chilly, and it's been raining and it's been a little bit windy.
Now Laura shows Jacob the weatherboard she uses to describe the weather each day.
And Laura says, "Which weather do you think "each picture shows?' Okay, I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer, off you go.
Fabulous, well done.
So the first picture is sunny, the second picture is cloudy, then you've got rainy and you've got windy.
Now Laura adds some more pictures for winter weather and she says, "Which weather do you think "my new pictures show?" So which weather do you think my new pictures show? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer, off you go.
Fabulous, well done.
So we've got frosty, icy and snowy.
Now who do you agree with? Aisha says, "In winter the weather is often hot and sunny".
Sam says," In winter the weather is often frosty and icy".
And Alex says, "In winter the weather is often "windy and rainy".
Okay, I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer, off you go.
Fabulous.
Well done.
it would be Sam who's correct.
Now here is your first task for today.
It says, check your local weather forecast and record the weather that is predicted for a week in winter.
So I'd like you to pause the video here and have a go at doing this activity, off you go.
Fabulous.
Well done.
So you may have done something similar to this here.
So we've got cloudy on Monday, cloudy on Tuesday, frosty on Wednesday, frosty on Thursday, and cloudy on Friday.
Now, it says observe and record weather for a week in winter.
So you could use Laura's pictures to help you.
I'd like you to pause the video here and have a go at doing this activity, off you go.
Fantastic, well done.
So we've got cloudy, frosty, frosty, sunny and cloudy.
Now it says to compare your winter weather record with your autumn weather record or use the one below.
So we've got cloudy, cloudy, sunny, rainy, rainy.
So I'd like you to pause the video here and I'd like you to have a go at doing this activity, off you go.
Fabulous.
Well done.
So Jun says, "I observed that it is cloudy "in both autumn and winter, "both weeks also had one day of sunny weather".
Andeep says, "It rained more in autumn than in winter "and there were more frosty days in winter".
Fantastic.
So that means that we are now onto the second part of our learning today, which is low temperatures in winter.
Now Izzy is playing outside in winter, and here is a picture of her school field in winter.
And she says, "It feels really chilly today.
"I was so cold that I had to put on my winter clothes".
Izzy feels cold, but what signs of cold weather might she observe? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer, off you go.
Fabulous.
Well done.
So it could be frost ice or snow.
And those are all signs of cold weather.
Also, we can see that there are no leaves on the trees, so therefore it's wintertime.
And we can see that there are a lot of heavy clouds, which are also another sign that it might be cold outside.
Now Izzy knows it's cold because she can observe frost on her mom's car and ice on the path.
Laura comes to play with Izzy outside and she says, "The weather is so cold today "that I can even see my breath when I breathe out my mouth.
"I look like a fire breathing dragon".
Now how can Izzy check how cold it is? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer, off you go.
So Izzy can observe signs of winter and she can also measure the temperature of how hot or cold it is.
Now what can she use to do this? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Fabulous.
Well done.
She can use something called a thermometer to measure the temperature.
So you might have seen a thermometer before.
When maybe you've been sick and you've had to put a thermometer in your mouth to check your temperature.
Or sometimes you have a forehead thermometer, and sometimes you have a thermometer outside as well.
Now do you know how to use a thermometer? Have you ever used one before? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer, off you go.
Fabulous.
Well done.
So a thermometer has numbers on it and we can read the number next to the top of a coloured line, which tells us what the temperature is.
Now the lower the number is, the colder something is.
And some thermometers look a little bit like a digital clock.
They have a number on them which tells us the temperature, just like the digital thermometer there.
And some houses have thermometers that tell us the temperature inside our home, and that's called an indoor thermometer.
And we can use a thermometer to measure the temperature of the weather in different seasons.
Now what does a thermometer measure? Does it measure the time, the temperature or the length of something? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer, off you go.
Fabulous.
Well done.
It measures the temperature.
Now here is task B.
It says, tell a partner which clothes are best suited to wear in cold weather in the season of winter.
So I'm going to give you some time now to do that.
I'd like you to pause the video here and have a go at doing that, off you go.
Fabulous.
Well done.
"So in cold weather I need to wear clothes "that will help me to stay warm.
"I wear warm trousers and a jumper as well as a thick coat.
"I also wear a woolly hat, scarf and some gloves." And Alex is being very sensible there.
Now it says, use the thermometers to measure the temperature for a week and you need to record the temperature each day.
So what I'd like you to do now then is, you are going to have to go off and do this activity and then after a week you're gonna have to come back to this lesson so we can share the results.
Okay, off you go.
Hi everyone, welcome back.
So here is an example of what you might have recorded over this week when you were measuring the temperature each day.
So on Monday you might have seen that the temperature was eight degrees, on Tuesday three degrees, on Wednesday four degrees, Thursday 10 degrees and Friday six degrees.
Now it says compare the winter temperatures with the autumn temperatures you recorded, or use these autumn temperatures below.
So we've got 14 degrees, seven degrees, eight degrees, 11 degrees and 10 degrees, which are.
So I'd like you to pause video here and have a go at doing this activity, off you go.
Fabulous, well done.
So John says, "There were a couple of days "where the temperatures were the same in both seasons".
And Andeep says, "The temperature is often lower in winter, "especially on the Tuesday and Wednesday, "which means the weather is colder".
So now we are onto the summary of your learning today and it says the weather is often different in each season.
The weather in winter turns colder, sometimes with snow, frost and ice.
A thermometer can be used to measure the temperature of different seasons.
We can make observations of the weather during winter.
Now, I am so proud of your fantastic learning that you have done for this lesson.
You have persevered and you've stayed patient during the activities as well over the week.
Well done.
