Hi everyone.
Thank you for coming to learn with me today.
I'm Mrs. Horton and I'm really looking forward to learning all about food and how it grows with you in today's lesson.
Today's lesson is part of the unit on growing plants.
This lesson is called Growing Your Own Food, and we will be learning all about how we can grow healthy food in a way that is good for the planet.
The outcome for our lesson today is to explain that plants are often grown as food as part of a healthy diet.
This lesson builds on what you know already about plants and what they need to grow well.
And as part of our big learning question, how do living things grow and reproduce? There are five key words in our lesson today.
We'll take a quick look at them now and I'd like you to have a go at saying them with me.
So we'll do my turn, your turn for each one.
Are you ready? My turn, sustainable, your turn.
My turn, plant, your turn.
My turn, crop, your turn.
My turn, healthy diet, your turn.
And my turn, locally, your turn.
Fantastic.
We'll have a really good look at each of these words as we come to them in the lesson, so don't worry if you're not sure about any of them now.
We'll have plenty of time to get to grips with them later on.
Our lesson today is divided into two parts.
Let's get started with the first part.
Where do the plants we eat come from? Lots of the food we eat comes from plants.
There's our first keyword of the lesson, plants.
We already know that a plant is a living thing that often has roots, a stem and leaves.
Let's have another go at saying this keyword.
Are you ready? My turn, plants, your turn.
Great.
Lots of the food we eat comes from plants.
Take a look at this pizza on the screen.
Looks tasty, doesn't it? Do you know which plants are used to make this pizza? Think about all the different ingredients you can see.
Which ones come from plants? We can see there are tomatoes on the pizza.
They come from plants.
And we can also see some herbs scattered on the top to make the pizza extra tasty.
Herbs come from plants, too.
Did you know that pizza bases are made with flour? And that comes from plants as well.
Flour is made from a plant called wheat.
So, lots of parts of the pizzas we eat come from plants.
What plants do you eat? Think about your breakfast this morning or what you're going to have for your dinner later.
Will you be eating any foods that come from plants? Where do you think those plants come from? Take a moment to pause the video here so you can think about your ideas and share them with a partner.
Talk about the plants that you eat and your ideas about where they come from.
Welcome back.
Did you and your partner think of many different types of foods that come from plants? Were there any that you really weren't sure where they came from? Let's learn some more and see if we can find out.
Not all plants can be eaten.
Some plants are safe to eat as food, like these blueberries you can see in the picture.
All of the plants used to make a pizza and the ones you talked about with your partner are safe to eat, too.
Some plants are not safe to eat and will make us very sick.
In the picture there are some deadly nightshade berries which will do lots of damage to our bodies if we ate them.
We must never eat plants that we find growing outside unless you have checked with an adult first.
Can you see how the safe blueberries and the poisonous nightshade berries look very similar to each other? It can be easy to accidentally mix up safe and unsafe plants, so this is why we should check with an adult every single time.
Even if you think a plant looks safe to eat.
The plants that we eat are an important part of a healthy diet.
Can you see one of our keywords for today in that sentence? Let's have a go at saying it.
My turn, healthy diet, your turn.
Great.
A healthy diet includes all the foods that we need to keep us well.
A healthy diet includes fruit and vegetables from plants.
We're focusing on this part of a healthy diet in today's lesson, but there are some other elements to a healthy diet that you might already know about, too.
When plants are grown as food, we call them crops.
This is another one of today's keywords, so let's have a go at saying it.
My turn, crops, your turn.
Excellent.
You can see some crops in the pictures here.
The first picture is a field of wheat.
Remember how we learned earlier that flour comes from a plant called wheat? Well, this is what it looks like when it's growing.
You can also see an apple tree growing in an orchard.
You can see from these pictures that different crops grow in different ways.
Some grow in fields and some grow on bushes or trees.
Let's have a quick check to see how you're doing so far.
Can you find the missing word in this sentence? Plants are an important part of a what diet? Is it A, growing diet, B, unhealthy diet, or C, healthy diet? How did you do? Well done.
Plants are an important part of a healthy diet.
Now for another question.
When plants are grown as food, what are they called? Is it A, farms, B, crops, or C, vegetables? What do you think? Great.
Plants are called crops when they are grown as food.
The food we eat can be grown in different places.
Crops are often grown locally.
This means in places near to where you live.
Let's have a try at saying that keyword.
My turn, locally, your turn.
Well done.
So, things that are local are near to where you live.
Your school is in your local area and your family will get your shopping from somewhere local, too.
Things that are far away are not local, so the North Pole is not local.
Can you think of some different places where you have seen crops growing locally so near to you? Think about what sort of places are good for growing things.
Crops could be growing locally on farms. There are lots and lots of farms in our country.
You might have seen one in your local area when you've been out and about, or you might even have been to visit a farm and see what's growing.
Sometimes you can visit farms to pick your own food, like strawberries or pumpkins.
Laura says, "I've seen crops growing in fields near my school.
Farmers are often very busy at the end of summer when most of the crops are ready to be picked." This time of year is sometimes called harvest time.
You might have had harvest festival assemblies at school when we celebrate all the food that has been grown and picked at this time of year.
If you've been to pick your own food, like strawberries or pumpkins, you probably went around the end of the summer or autumn because this is when many plants are fully grown and ready to be harvested or picked.
Now it's not just farms where food could be grown.
Crops can also be grown locally in gardens or allotments.
You can see some salad ingredients being grown in a garden in that picture there.
Have you ever been in a garden or an allotment where crops have been growing? Maybe you've even grown food in your own garden.
Lucas says, "I have grown some vegetables at home and my school has a garden where we grow crops to eat." Andeep says, "In my garden, I planted some tomatoes in May and then onions in November for me to eat." Some crops are not grown locally, so some crops are grown far away from where we live.
Grains such as rice are grown as crops in different parts of the world.
This is because some crops need a certain type of temperature or weather to grow well, which they would not get in our country.
Other countries grow food that we eat, such as pineapples, bananas and lemons.
All of these fruits need lots of sun and very warm temperatures to go well, which we don't get here in our country.
Let's do another quick check for understanding.
Jun and Sam are talking about crops.
Have a look at what they're saying and see who do you agree with and why.
Jun says crops can only be grown in fields.
Sam says crops can be grown in different places.
Who do you think is right? Pause the video here for some thinking time and perhaps a quick chat with a partner about your ideas.
What did you think? Well, we have learned today that Sam is correct.
Crops can be grown in different places, including fields, gardens, allotments, and around school grounds.
We've learned a lot so far.
I think it's time for us to put all this new learning to use with a practise task.
Your job is to think about your favourite meal.
With a partner, talk about all of the food that makes up this meal, all of the different ingredients.
You can see my favourite meal on the screen there.
Some parts come from plant and some do not.
When you have had a chat with a partner about your favourite meal, think about whether this meal is part of a healthy diet and why.
Then, draw the meal and label each part.
So on my favourite meal I would label each different food, like the chicken, the chips, the cucumber, and so on.
Also, make a note about which foods in your meal come from plants.
And can these plants be grown locally? So, can they be grown near to you? There might be some foods that not sure about, so think about how we could find out whether these plants can be grown locally or not.
Pause the video here to have a go at drawing your favourite meal and answering the questions on screen.
Welcome back.
How did you do? Your answers are probably going to be different to mine because your favourite meal was likely different to mine as well.
But you can take a look at my work to help you see if you have included everything you need on your own.
I have labelled the chicken, tomatoes, cucumber, red pepper, onion, and chips.
I also put made from potatoes on the chips because that's where they came from.
On my favourite meal, the food that comes from plants were tomatoes, cucumber, red pepper, onion, and chips.
So, most of my meal came from plants.
Was it the same with yours? Did you have lots of food from plants or not very many? I also added that the fruit and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet and all these plants can be grown locally.
I wonder if your meals had foods that can be grown locally or whether they need to be grown in far away places with different weather conditions to us.
Time for the second part of our lesson, now.
Sustainable food, healthy planet.
Growing your own plants is a great way to be sustainable.
Sustainable is another one of our keywords today and it's a bit tricky to say.
Let's have a try at saying that one out loud.
My turn, sustainable, your turn.
Well done.
Let's find out what sustainable means.
Being sustainable means making small changes to help look after the planet.
Making these small changes helps to look after our natural world so that people in the future will be able to enjoy it.
There are a couple of pictures of things we can do to be more sustainable there.
Food composting and using water butts.
Let's find out a bit more about these.
There are lots of different things you can do to be more sustainable.
Izzy says, "At school we put all of our food waste in the compost bins and use it to make new soil." So composting means putting leftover food that has come from plants into a compost bin, as well as food that hasn't been eaten.
You can put things like banana skins and potato peels into a compost bin so nothing gets wasted.
Over time this breaks down and becomes a sort of soil that is really good for growing healthy plants.
So this is much better than putting your food waste into your main bin that gets taken away to the landfill every couple of weeks.
Sam says, "We have a water butt that collects all of the rain water.
We recycle it and use it to water the plants." So water butts are big containers that gather up rainwater that would otherwise just fall onto the ground and be wasted.
Using this water for watering plants means we need to use less water from the tap, so it's much better for the environment.
What things do you do at home or at school to be sustainable? What things do you do that are good for our planet? You might use compost bins or water butts like Izzy and Sam or you might do something different.
Farmers and gardeners can grow plants in a sustainable way.
There's that key word again.
Shall we have another go at saying it since it's a bit of a mouthful? My turn, sustainable, your turn.
Great.
Do you feel like you're getting the hang of saying it now? So, farmers and gardeners can grow plants in a sustainable way.
They help to look after the planet by making sure that soil and plants are cared for and that water is not being wasted.
Just like us, farmers and gardeners can do things like using compost bins and water butts to grow their crops in a more sustainable way.
This is great for everyone because it's not just good for the environment, it saves money, too.
In the picture there you can see some daisies growing in a field.
Daisies are a type of flower called wildflowers because they grow well without anyone looking after them.
These wildflowers have been left to grow.
They provide food and shelter for bees, butterflies, and other wildlife.
This is helpful for people who grow crops because bees and butterflies help plants to make more seeds.
Some plants that we eat are grown in the UK in a sustainable way.
We can do this by caring for the plants and soil and not wasting water.
If the soil is cared for, then it means crops will grow well in the following year as well as those that are in the ground now.
You can see four different types of crops in the photos here.
Can you name these plants that we can grow sustainably in our gardens at home or at school? You might want to pause the video to have a go at naming them.
So we have potatoes, tomato plants, cabbages, and apple trees.
Have you eaten any of these foods? Have you ever tried growing any of them? Let's check in on our understanding so far.
We really have learned a lot in this lesson so far, haven't we? Have a go at completing this sentence.
Growing crops in a sustainable way means that.
Is it A, the soil is kept healthy to grow next year's plants, B, water is not wasted, or C, the farmer has been cared for? You might think that more than one answer is okay for this one.
Pause the video and have a try now.
So, there were two possible answers for this one.
Growing crops in a sustainable way means that A, the soil is healthy to grow next year's plants and it also means that B, water is not wasted.
Did you get them both? Alex and his friend Jacob are talking about the best way to grow plants in their school garden.
Alex says, "I think that growing plants in a sustainable way means using recycled water from a water butt and using food waste to make compost." Jacob says, "I think that growing plants in a sustainable way means making sure everything gets lots of water." Who do you agree with? Pause the video to have a really good think and maybe even a chat with someone about your ideas and come back when you have decided.
What did you think? Alex was correct here.
Using recycled water from a water butt and making compost out of food waste is much more sustainable than just using lots of water.
In fact, using too much water would be bad for both the crops and the environment.
One final check for understanding before you head off and try a practise task.
Take a look at this statement and decide whether you think it is true or false.
Potatoes can be grown in a sustainable way in the UK.
Is that true or is it false? I also want you to think about why this is true or false.
Use the sentence data here to frame your thinking.
I think this because.
Pause the video to have a try.
So, this statement is true.
We can grow potatoes in a sustainable way in the UK.
You might have said, "I think this is because gardeners can water potatoes from water butts and they can look after the plants and soil by adding food compost.
Was your idea similar? Now for a practise task that will really let you get stuck into growing plants sustainably.
Choose a plant to grow for food.
Think about what plants need to grow and stay healthy.
You already know lots about this, so now is the time to really put your knowledge into action.
Talk to an adult or partner about how you will grow your plant in a sustainable way.
There are some plants here in the pictures that can be grown sustainably in the UK.
Tomatoes, strawberries, courgettes, and peas.
You could choose one of these or something else.
You might need to think about the weather and the time of year, as some plants grow better in certain seasons.
Pause the video here to have a think and to talk about your ideas and start making plans for growing your own crops in a sustainable way.
Welcome back.
Do you have lots of plans for growing some healthy crops in a sustainable way? Here are some of the things you need to think about.
We know that plants need water, light, and the right temperature to grow and stay healthy.
I planted my carrot seeds in a pot to keep indoors until they get big enough to be planted outside.
You can see the process I used here.
I started by putting soil into a pot.
I reused an old pot rather than buying a new one to be more sustainable.
I also put a label on my pot so I knew what was in it.
Then I added the seeds and a little more soil on top.
After that, I put them on a window sill where they would get plenty of sunlight and gave them water from the water butt we have at school.
Did you remember to talk about how you would grow your plant in a sustainable way? These children did.
Let's see what they said.
Jun says, "I cared for my plant for many months.
I mixed food compost with the soil to keep it healthy." Lucas says, "I grew my own food to eat so it did not need plastic packaging, and we did not have to drive to a shop." Sofia says, "I collected rain in a jam jar and used this to water my plant." Andeep wonders what you did.
Did you have any of the same ideas? Did you think of anything different that isn't here? Plants take a while to grow, so it's going to be some time before your crops are ready to be harvested.
I can't wait to see how my carrots grow.
Are you excited to see how your seeds do? Watching your seeds grow into your own food can be lots of fun.
You might even be able to eat your plants as part of a healthy diet.
Wouldn't it be amazing to eat something that you have grown from seeds all by yourself? That brings us to the end of our lesson.
We've learned so much today.
Let's recap on the key learning points from this lesson.
Food from plants are an important part of a healthy diet.
Plants such as wheat and potatoes can be grown locally as crops for people to eat.
Some gardeners try to be sustainable, which means looking after the soil and plants to care for our planet.
You can grow your own food in lots of places such as in your garden and at school.
Thank you so much for joining me today to learn about growing our own food and how we can do this in a sustainable way.
You've done a great job thinking about how to grow your own crops and make plans to be sustainable.
I can't wait to see how your plans turn out.
I hope they will be tasty.
See you again next time.
