Hello, my name is Mrs. Mehrin, and I'm so excited to be learning with you today.
Today we are going to be learning all about brushing teeth.
Let's begin.
Welcome to today's lesson from the unit Healthy Me.
Your lesson outcome is, I can describe why it is important for humans to look after their teeth.
Now, I know that learning can sometimes be a little bit challenging, but that's okay because we are going to work really hard together, and we are going to learn lots of new things.
Let's start.
Now we're going to do our key words for today, and we're going to do my turn, your turn.
My turn, hygiene, your turn.
My turn, teeth, your turn.
My turn, plaque, your turn.
My turn, gums, your turn.
My turn, decay, your turn.
Fantastic, well done.
Now, our lesson is split into two parts today, and we're going to start with the first part, teeth.
Now there are lots of different ways that we can care for ourselves.
Do you know any? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic, well done.
So one might be exercising, and the second one might be having a healthy meal.
Now, keeping active, choosing healthy foods to eat, and having good personal hygiene can help to keep her human healthy.
Now, what do you need to do in order to have good personal hygiene? What do you need to do? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
So you could wash your hands, you could bathe, and have healthy teeth and gums. Do you know any other ways that we can take care of our personal hygiene? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
So other ways would be to make sure that we're wearing clean clothes.
And if we need to cough or sneeze, coughing or sneezing into a tissue, and then throwing it away.
And that helps everybody around us as well.
Now, brushing your teeth is another way to care for your body.
How does brushing your teeth help you to have good personal hygiene? I'll give you five seconds to think your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
So it helps us to have good, healthy teeth and gums. Now, brushing your teeth is A, a good exercise, B, part of a good diet, or C, good personal hygiene.
What do you think the answer is? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
The answer is C.
Good personal hygiene.
Now then, what do you think can happen if we don't brush our teeth? Give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
If we don't brush our teeth, then plaque can build up.
And so here is a picture of teeth with plaque.
What do you think plaque is? Can you figure it out from the picture? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
So plaque is a sticky substance that is made up mostly of germs, and it can cover your teeth and gums. Now, our gums are the part of our mouth in which our teeth are fixed, and our teeth push through our gums. Now, what happens to teeth and gums that have plaque on them? What do you think might happen? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Fantastic.
Well done.
So plaque can cause damage to your teeth and sometimes little holes can form in your teeth, and this can be really painful.
When teeth become damaged, we call this tooth decay.
Now let's do a quick check-in of your learning so far.
What is the name of the sticky coating that can cover your teeth and cause tooth decay? Remembers those little holes? Is it A, plant, B, plaque or C, plate? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
The answer is B, plaque.
Now here is your first task for today.
It says, working in a group, use a toothbrush to clean the plaque from this tooth.
So the plate is the tooth, the shoe polish is going to be the plaque, and then you're going to need a brush.
So you're going to need to put some of the shoe polish onto the plate to form the plaque on the tooth, and then use your brush to brush it clean.
So I'll give you some time now.
I want you to pause the video here and have a go at doing that activity.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
So here we have somebody applying plaque to the tooth, then brushing off the plaque with an electric toothbrush.
Electric toothbrushes are really great for getting rid of plaque.
And then also another one where we've got brushing off plaque with a manual toothbrush.
So both toothbrushes are just as good as each other, but, as you can see, you'll be able to tell the difference once you've used both.
Now we are on to the second part of our learning, which is keeping teeth healthy.
So as well as brushing your teeth, there are some other things that we can do to keep our teeth and gums healthy.
Do you know any other ways that we can keep our teeth and gums healthy? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
So one way is to avoid sugary foods, and these can help to keep our teeth healthy.
So we've got some examples of sugary food here.
We've got some sweets, some donuts, and fizzy drinks.
Another way is to go to the dentist regularly, and this can help to keep your teeth healthy.
Now, what happens when you go to the dentist? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
So the dentist will look at your teeth and gums, and check to see if they are healthy.
And they might clean your teeth for you to remove any plaque that you might have missed.
They'll also give you some advice on how you can keep your teeth and your gums healthy.
Now, why do you think it's so important that we brush our teeth? Think about what you've learned so far and anything else that you might know about why brushing your teeth is so important.
I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
So brushing our teeth is really healthy, and it's so important for us because otherwise we'll end up with something called tooth decay, which we looked at earlier.
And that's when you get those little holes in your teeth that can be really, really painful.
Now let's do a quick check-in of your learning, It says, true or false, avoiding sugary food and visiting the dentist regularly helps to keep teeth healthy.
Is that true or false? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
The answer is true, and I think this because, A, eating sugary food can prevent plaque, or B, eating sugary food can cause plaque.
Again, I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go, Well done.
The answer is B, eating sugary food can cause plaque.
Now, brushing your teeth helps to get rid of plaque, which contains germs that can harm your teeth and gums. When you brush your teeth, you need to brush the outer, inner, and chewing parts of all your teeth.
So let's have a look at this picture.
This person, in the first part, is brushing the front of their teeth.
Then they're doing the inner part, and all the chewing parts of their teeth, and then they're going behind their teeth as well.
It's really, really important that we're also brushing behind our teeth and not just the outside part of our teeth as well.
Otherwise, we're going to end up with plaque on the back of our teeth that we can't see as easily, and that's going to lead to tooth decay.
So it's really important that you take your time and you brush your teeth.
And dentists say that you should brush your teeth for a total of two whole minutes.
So you could try putting a timer on when you brush your teeth to make sure that you are brushing for long enough and that you have managed to get all of your teeth.
Another really important way that you can make sure that you're brushing all of your teeth is to stand in front of a mirror.
If you stand in front of a mirror and do it, then you can make sure that you have brushed every single tooth because they are all important.
And here is a picture of somebody doing just that, and they're using the mirror to help them check where your toothbrush is cleaning.
What a fantastic job this person is doing.
Now, how often do you think you should brush your teeth? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
So you should brush your teeth twice a day, and this is going to help you to have healthy teeth and gums. So you could brush your teeth after you've had your breakfast and then again at bedtime.
Now, dentists say there should be once in the evening before you go to bed, and at one other time in the day.
Now, who do you agree with? Aisha says, "I exercise every day to keep my teeth and gums healthy." Izzy says, "I visit the dentist and brush my teeth to keep my teeth and gums healthy." And Alex says, "I wash my hands to keep my teeth and gums healthy." Who do you think is correct? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
It's Izzy who is correct.
Now, to have healthy teeth and gums, how many times a day should we brush our teeth? Is it A, once, B, twice, or C, three times? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
The answer is twice.
Now I want you to observant adult brushing their teeth.
How do they make sure they clean every part of the tooth? So I want you to pause the video here, and I want you to have a go at this activity.
Off you go.
Fantastic.
Well done.
So what did you notice? What were they doing that was really important and helping them to make sure that they brush every single one of their teeth? So you might have noticed that they're standing in front of a mirror and also making sure that they're brushing every tooth, front and back.
And there we have pictures to show you as well.
Now, your second activity is going to take you a little bit longer because you're going to create a weekly toothbrushing diary.
So you need to include the following.
You need to include a heading, which is a title.
You need to put in the days of the week and two tick boxes for each day because, remember, you need to brush your teeth twice a day at different times, so once in the morning and once before bed.
So I'd like you to pause the video here, and you are going to have to come back to this video after a week to see how you got on with your toothbrushing diary.
So remember all the tips that we've shared today.
And if you need to during the week, you can always come back and you can watch this video again to see whether or not you are doing all of the things that we've discussed.
And by the end of it, you will be a pro at brushing your teeth.
So I'll see you again in a week's time.
Hi everyone.
Welcome back.
So let's see how you got on with your weekly toothbrushing diary.
So this person here made sure that they brushed their teeth in the morning and in the evening, every single day for a whole week.
So they're going to have really lovely, healthy gums and teeth.
Now, did you use all the tips that we talked about? Did you stand in front of a mirror and make sure that you brushed every single one of your teeth? I bet you did, and I bet your diary is looking fantastic.
Well done.
Now we are on to the summary of our learning today.
Personal hygiene is the way we care for our bodies, including brushing our teeth.
Plaque is a sticky substance made up mostly of the germs that cause tooth decay.
Avoiding sugary food and visiting the dentist regularly helps to keep teeth healthy because, remember, they can give you some really good advice on how you can keep your teeth and your gums healthy, and they can help to get rid of any plaque that we might have missed.
And we should brush our teeth twice a day to have healthy teeth and gums, and that's really, really important.
Well done.
I am so proud of you and I'm so proud of the progress that you've made in brushing your teeth as well and trying really, really hard with that.
Well done.
