Hello, my name is Mrs. Mehrin, and I'm so excited to be learning with you today! We are going to be learning all about different amounts of food.

Let's begin.

Welcome to today's lesson from the unit Healthy Me.

Your lesson outcome is, "I can describe why it is important for humans to eat the right amounts of different types of food." Now, I know that learning can sometimes be a little bit challenging, but that's okay, because it just means that we are going to work really hard together, and we're going to learn lots of fabulous new things.

Let's begin.

So here are your five keywords for today's lesson.

Let's do my turn, your turn.

My turn.

Food.

Your turn.

My turn.

Healthy.

Your turn.

My turn.

Amount.

Your turn.

My turn.

Unhealthy.

Your turn.

My turn.

Portion.

Your turn.

Fantastic.

Well done.

Now, our lesson today is split into two parts.

Let's begin with the first part, different types of food.

Now, Laura is talking about the food that she ate on the weekend, and she says, "I ate lots of chips, crisps, hash browns, and potato waffles at the weekend." Hmm.

Now what do you notice about Laura's food? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

Well done.

So you may have said there's a lot of potatoes that Laura has eaten, and not much of any other different types of food.

Now, why do you think it's important for humans to eat different foods? Again, I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

Well done.

So food gives living things energy, and helps them to stay healthy.

It's important that humans eat lots of different foods to stay healthy.

So here we still have some examples of different foods.

We've got porridge with bananas, meat with vegetables, and soya noodles.

Now, I want you to think, what have you eaten today? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

Well done.

So I hope you've eaten lots different types of food today.

I had some baked beans this morning, on toast.

I have had some really healthy fruits and vegetables as a snack.

And then I have had a sandwich, packed with lots of salad, and a little bit of cheese for lunch.

And then for dinner today, I had some rice and I had some chicken.

Now Lucas says, "I really like pizza with lots of cheese on it, but my parents said it would be unhealthy to eat this every day." Now, what other foods could Lucas eat each week as well as pizza? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

Well done.

So you might have said Lucas could have some pasta, he could have some fish, he could have some chicken, maybe some potatoes.

There's lots and lots of different foods that Lucas could try.

Now, different types of food can help our bodies in different ways.

We've got some fruits and vegetables here, and some milk and dairy foods.

Now, do you know any of the ways that different types of food can help our bodies? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

Well done.

Now, foods that contain milk or dairy help our bones, teeth, and nails, to grow strong and stay healthy.

Now, foods such as meat, fish, and soya, help your body to grow, so it's important to eat these regularly as part of a healthy diet.

So we might have meat, some fish, some soya.

Now let's see, who do you agree with? Sam says, "It's important to eat the same types of food if they taste good." Izzy says, "It is healthy to eat the same meal every day if we like it." And Alex says, "It's important to eat different types of food, because they help our bodies in different ways." What do you think? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

Well done.

The answer is Alex.

It's important to eat different types of food because they help our bodies in different ways.

Well done.

Now here is your first task today.

It says, draw or discuss the different foods you have eaten in the last few days.

And Andeep says, "Have you eaten lots of different foods?" So I'd like you to pause the video now and have a go at this activity.

Off you go.

So Laura says, "I have eaten some cereal with milk for breakfast.

I had a chicken sandwich at lunchtime with an apple and some yoghourt, and for dinner I had meatballs with pasta." So Laura has definitely eaten lots of different types of foods.

How about you? Have a look at yours.

Is it similar to Laura's? Have you eaten lots of different foods, or have you eaten lots of the same foods? Now the second part of your activity is to identify and name the different foods in this meal.

How do the different foods help our bodies? So I would like you to pause the video here, and have a go at this activity.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

Well done.

Now, we've got some bread, lettuce, milk, chips, apple, and spaghetti with meat and tomato sauce.

Now Andeep says, "The apples and lettuce are fruits and vegetables, which are important for keeping us healthy.

The milk will help our bones, teeth, and nails, to stay healthy as well." And the chips might give a little bit of energy, along with the spaghetti.

And the meatballs are a great source of protein, which are going to keep our muscles nice and healthy too.

Now we are on to the second part of our learning.

Different amounts of food.

Sofia says, "My parents told me that I can eat fruit and vegetables every day, but I can only have a chocolate bar at the weekend." Now why do you think Sophia's parents have said that? Why is it not healthy to eat chocolate every single day? What do you think? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

Well done.

So chocolate is full of sugar, which is not great for our health, not good for our teeth, and lots of fats as well in there.

So Lucas says, "My parents said that it's healthy to eat some cheese, but not too much.

They said, I have to eat the right amount, but I'm not sure what this means." Now humans need to eat different amounts of different foods.

Aisha says, "An amount of food means how much of it you should eat." And humans should eat more of some foods and less of others to stay healthy.

Now, why do you think that might be? Why can't we eat the same amount of all the different types of food? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

Well done.

So we want to eat lots more of the healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, and less of the unhealthy foods, such as chocolate, or things like chips and pizza.

Now, some foods help us to stay healthy and other foods can make us unhealthy if we eat too much of them.

Humans need to eat the right amount of different types of food.

Now, we call the amount of food that we eat a portion.

So you might have heard somebody saying, "You need to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day." Now, quick check-in of your learning.

True or false? Humans need to eat the same amount of all foods.

Is that true or false? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

Well done.

The answer is false.

Now, can you justify your answer? I think this because, A, humans should only eat the foods they like.

Or is it because B, humans need different amounts of different foods to stay healthy? Which one do you think it is? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

The answer is B.

Now Jun says, "I can eat as much pasta and meat as I want every day, as it tastes delicious." Andeep says, "You need to eat the right amounts of different foods.

You shouldn't eat too much meat or pasta every day." Who do you think is correct, Jun or Andeep? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

Well done.

The correct person is Andeep.

Even though you might really really enjoy something a lot, doesn't mean that you should be eating it every single day.

Now sometimes, there might be some healthy vegetables, healthy fruits that you don't like that much.

However, you should always try that food at least a few times, because sometimes, it takes us a few tries before we really start to like something.

Now Sofia says, "I know that I need to eat different amounts of different foods, but it can be difficult to remember how much of each I should eat." What do you think might help Sofia to remember? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

Well done.

So we can use something called a triangle to remind us of the amount of each food we should eat.

Now let's see how that works.

So we can divide the triangle to show the different sized portions that we should be eating.

So the amount of food that we should be eating.

So fruits and vegetables, you can see, take up a lot of that triangle.

So that shows us that we should be eating lots of fruit and vegetables.

The largest portion is at the bottom of the triangle.

This is for fruits and vegetables, and reminds us that we should be eating a larger amount of these.

Next up we have the bread, rice, cereal, potatoes, and pasta.

So we should still be eating a lot of these foods.

However, we need to be eating less than we do, less than the fruit and vegetables that we eat.

Those should still be more.

So this section is the amount of bread, rice, cereal, potatoes, and pasta we should eat to help us stay healthy.

Then we have milk and dairy.

So you can see now all of the portions are getting smaller and smaller as we go up the triangle.

So this section shows the amount of milk and dairy we should be eating and drinking.

These help us to have strong bones, teeth, and nails.

Next we have meat, fish, eggs and beans.

This section is the amount of meat, fish, eggs and beans we should eat to help our body to grow.

We need to eat some of this type of food, but not too much.

And finally, fats and sugars.

Now, the smallest amount is at the top of the triangle.

This section is for foods that are high in fat or sugar, such as cakes and sweets.

These are foods that we should not be eating every day.

Now, let's do a quick check-in of your learning.

Which of these can help us to remember the amount of different foods that we should eat? Is it A, sorting hoops? B, a triangle? Or C, a table? I'll give you five seconds to think about your answer.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

Well done.

The answer is B, a triangle.

Now, I want you to make a giant food triangle using sticky tape.

I want you to sort real foods, or foods from the next slide into the correct section.

So let's have a look at what you're going to need.

So you're going to need masking tape, you're going to need a label for each group, and you're going to need a selection of different foods or pictures of different foods.

So let's have a look at those pictures first.

So you could include things like tomatoes, onions, peppers, cucumbers, avocados, potatoes, pasta, cereal, rice, bread, milk, yoghourt, cheese, butter, meat, fish, eggs, beans, sweets, cakes, and biscuits.

So I want you to make a giant food triangle now using sticky tape, and sort those foods into the correct sections, or if you want, you can use your own foods as well.

So I'd like you to pause the video now, and have a go at that activity.

Off you go.

Fantastic.

Well done.

So it may have looked like this, so you may have just labelled them.

Sorry, you may have done the labels here, like this.

Where you've got fats and sugars at the top.

You've got meat, fish, eggs, and beans, followed by the milk and dairy.

Then next you've got your breads, your pastas, your potatoes, and right at the bottom your fruits and vegetables.

Then you needed to sort those foods.

So at the very top, we've got sweets, and then we've got, next up we've got eggs and beans, kidney beans as well.

We've got some milk, some butter, some cream, and some cheese.

Then we've got cereals and breads and potatoes and rice.

And then at the bottom we've got our fruits and vegetables.

Now let's do a quick summary of your learning today.

Different types of foods can help our bodies in different ways.

It's important for humans to eat the right amounts of different types of food, and amounts of food can be planned for using a triangle divided into different portions.

Fantastic, well done! You have worked so hard today, and you have used your critical thinking and you've done a fabulous job.

Well done!.
