11 April 2025Helping pupils get smart about financial education and online spending – new lesson resources for primary and secondary teachers

Dr Ed Southall
Subject Lead (maths)
We all want to prepare pupils for the real world. That means giving them the tools to manage money confidently – whether they’re choosing what to spend in a shop, or in a game.
That’s why we’ve launched brand-new, financial education lessons, backed by government and aligned to the national curriculum. They’re designed to help pupils – and support teachers – as they learn about money and develop financial skills to manage money sensibly, both on and offline.
Real-world lessons for a digital generation
We’ve designed these resources in partnership with independent charity, MEI and the Association of Citizenship Teaching, to support teachers in giving pupils the knowledge and confidence they need to make sense of money – in every part of life. That means:
- Helping primary school children understand where money comes from, how to keep it safe, and the difference between wants and needs.
- Helping children spot the hidden costs of in-game purchases.
- Teaching about credit and debit cards, and how ads and influencers can sway our decisions.
- Introducing secondary pupils to topics like inflation, bank statements and payslips.
- Understanding the economy works and how that matters to pupils’ lives
- Exploring how maths links to real careers – from design, catering and sales to construction and running a small business.
There’s something for every year group and it’s all designed to be clear, practical and ready to use in the classroom.
They’re part of Oak’s growing library of free, high-quality, sequenced curriculum resources. They’re made by teachers, quality-assured, and trusted by over a third of the teaching workforce.
Maths and citizenship units to enhance pupils’ financial literacy
As well as our new financial education units, explore our national curriculum aligned maths and citizenship units that help pupils learn how to manage their own money, consider real-world applications of maths, understand more about the UK economy, and much more.
Save time, feel confident
Every lesson includes key vocabulary, clear learning objectives and engaging practice tasks. These resources have been quality-assured and tested in classrooms – helping you feel confident that you’re delivering accurate, age-appropriate content.
They’re also fully flexible. Whether you want to borrow a handful of slides or use an entire unit, it’s easy to make them work for your classroom - they’re all editable and free.
