Hello there, I'm Mrs Howley and I think my friend Cedric will be along any minute now.

I can use my senses to tell when he's on his way.

Can you remember the five sense? Which ones can I use? I can see the slithery track that he's left on the ground.

I can hear a slithering sound as he comes into the room.

I can smell, well he's got quite bad breath.

I didn't mean it Cedric! Here he is.

I wonder how you've been using your senses.

We're going to do some reading today and use our detective skills and we might find some evidence that uses the senses.

In this lesson we're going to make inferences based on what is said and done.

Want to look for evidence in the text.

We're going to start with some spelling.

Then we're going to have a think about what inferences is.

Then we're going to read the text and then we're going to to explore the text and answer some questions.

In this lesson you will need an exercise book or some paper, a pencil or a pen and your brilliant brain.

When we're reading today we might find some evidence in the text based on what the writer has described using their five senses.

What I'd like you to try now is looking at each of those words really carefully.

You know they all end in E-A-R.

Say the word in a sentence then write it down without peeking and then check the spelling.

So in this lesson we're going to make inferences.

Cedric wants to know what is an inference? What is inference? Inference is where you look for clues in the text about what a character says or does and we use those clues to work out exactly what's going on.

You need to get your detective magnifying glasses out there ready and get looking for clues.

When we're reading we're also going to use our reading strategies of looking carefully at the letters, making the sounds and then blending them together.

If we get to the end of a sentence Cedric and it doesn't make sense, we just go back and we read it again.

When we're using inference we have to ask questions as we read like super detectives.

We need to find those clues in the text.

What are the characters saying? What are they doing? And you might need to use your won experiences to put yourself in the characters shoes.

I think you'll be good at that Cedric.

Let's have a look at our text using those strategies now.

The first word is one of our tricky words, The.

The, hmm this next word looks very tricky, but I'm going to break it down.

I'm going to have a go now at answering an inference question.

When we were reading that did you manage to ask some questions about what was going on? That really helps.

Let's have a look at this question, it says: Suddenly, they could hear Lion racing back on the dusty path.

I remember this bit.

They sat up excited and eager.

So this is my turn Cedric, but you can help.

Why do they st up? Let's see, they could hear Lion on the dusty path and then they sit up.

So I think they want to know what Lion has got to say.

They're excited to hear what Lion has got to say.

Can you see I used the clues in the sentence before then to help me answer that question.

This one is a bit tricky Cedric it says: Why are they sitting in silence? Let's see, I'm going to use my own experiences to help with this one.

If it's very hot and the sun is burning your skin, do you feel like talking? No, you don't Cedric and they're all waiting.

I wonder what they're waiting for.

But I think the fact that the sun is burning their skin, I think they're sitting in silence because their feeling fed up.

What do you think Cedric? Can you see how we're having to put ourselves in the shoes of the characters in the story? Now it's your turn.
