Hi there! My name is Ms. Toole.
And I, really enjoy getting creative with our stories.
In today's lesson we are going to be doing a spelling activity.
We are going to re-tell our story, of how butterflies came to be.
And, we are going to become a creator and create our own bag to share some joy.
So you are going to need an exercise book or piece of paper.
A pen or a pencil, your fabulous brain and your amazing self! So pause now to come get your resources and then once you've got everything, come back and press play.
Before we start our spellings we are going to sing a song.
And the song is based in one of our stories "How a butterfly came to be".
And it's all the key events of our story put into a song to help us remember what happened.
So I'll sing a line and I'd like you to sing at home.
So are you ready? It goes like this.
♪ The creator made animals big and small ♪ Ready? ♪ The creator made animals big and small ♪ ♪ He was proud of his work so, took a rest ♪ ♪ He was proud of his work so, took a rest ♪ ♪ When he woke he was shocked to see ♪ ♪ When he woke he was shocked to see ♪ ♪ The people had no joy ♪ ♪ The people had no joy ♪ So we sing that all together.
Ready? ♪ The creator made animals big and small ♪ ♪ He was proud of his work so took a rest ♪ ♪ When he woke he was shocked to see ♪ ♪ That people had no joy.
♪ You know what happens next in our story? ♪ He put in his bag his favourite things ♪ Off you go ♪ He put in his bag his favourite things ♪ ♪ He mixed them together to create something new ♪ ♪ He mixed them together to create something new ♪ ♪ The people smiled and felt joy ♪ ♪ The people smiled and felt joy ♪ ♪ And that's how butterflies are made ♪ ♪ And that's how butterflies are made ♪ ♪ And that's how butterflies are made ♪ Beautiful! Right.
Let's do it all together.
So from the beginning, "The Creator".
I will sing so you can sing along with me and let's put some actions into it.
Are we ready? ♪ The creator made animals big and small ♪ ♪ He was proud of his work so took a rest ♪ ♪ When he woke he was shocked to see ♪ ♪ That people had no joy.
♪ ♪ He put in his bag his favourite things ♪ ♪ He mixed them together to create something new ♪ ♪ The people smiled and felt joy ♪ ♪ And that's how butterflies are made.
♪ Thank you for joining in and I hope you've enjoyed it.
I wonder if you can create your own song at home, all about our story and how butterflies came to be.
In this unit, our spelling focus has been adding the suffix -est to a word to create a new word.
Can you remember where we put the suffix? A suffix, goes at the end of a word.
And by adding the suffix -est, can you remember what we are doing with our root word? We are making it the best it can be! In our last lesson, I showed you six words that had our suffix -est in.
We had tallest, smallest, prettiest, ugliest, greatest, and brightest.
And all of our words have the -est suffix on them.
Now each word starts off as a root word.
So tallest is tall as our root word and -est is our suffix.
Smallest starts with the root word.
Small, and then we add -est.
Prettiest, has the root word.
Pretty, and the we add the -est.
Ugliest has the root word.
Ugly, and then we add -est.
Greatest starts with the root word Great, and then we add -est.
And brightest starts with the root word.
Bright.
Well done! So we have six words on the screen, and today's spelling activity is for you to write six sentences and each sentence needs to have one of our words off the screen.
So I will give you a few examples.
The giraffe is the 'tallest' animal at the zoo.
Or we could have.
The butterfly has the 'prettiest' wings of all the animals.
The star in the sky, is the 'brightest' star you will ever see.
So then I had 'tallest' for the giraffe, 'prettiest' for the butterfly wings and the star was the 'brightest' you will ever see.
So I have given you three examples there, but I will now like you to go away and write your own six sentences.
Now remember when you're are writing a sentence they have to start with a capital letter.
We need to say our words, "the giraffe is the tallest animal at the zoo" nine words.
Then I write them down and at the end of my sentence, I put a full stop to show it's the end of my information.
So pause the video now, have a go at writing your six sentences and when you are done, you can press play.
Before we do our activity today, I would like us to re-tell the story of how butterflies came to be.
I will do it first, and then I would like you to pause and have a go at doing it at home.
It's story time, it's story time- look, listen, wow! In the beginning the creator made all things.
Birds and bees, fish and fowl, plants and porcupines, horses and humans.
He made it all and then had a long sleep.
When he woke, he went for a walk to see how his creatures were getting on.
Fish were swimming, birds were flying and snakes were slithering.
It all seemed to be going to plan, till he came to a human village.
He noticed the children were playing, and laughing and was pleased.
But then he saw their parents working, and worrying about themselves and their families.
They had no joy, only had work and worry.
"That's not right" he thought.
"But what shall I do?" He went off to the wise woman at the forest and asked her advice.
She was sitting in her hut, smoking her pipe.
"The parents are all so seriously sad, they have no joy just duty.
That wasn't my plan.
I made the world so they will have joy." "So" she said, "you have to make something to give them a little joy." Take the best things from what you have made, the things that give you the most joy, and mix them together into something new and see what happens.
He went out into the world and collected his favourite things.
The moonlight, shining on the water.
Our flowers delicate petals.
*sniff* Pollen, from a flower.
And the pattern of a snake's skin.
He collected them all and mixed them in a bag.
Breathe and a breath away.
*blows* Poof! And out came, butterflies.
Beautiful butterflies of every colour, delicate and beautiful.
As he watched, they flew into the village.
The children laughed and chased them around.
And then the parents looked up.
And just for a moment, from their work, they smiled.
And each time they saw the butterfly, they smiled.
And that's why, when you see butterflies, just for a moment you'll find yourself smiling.
Have a go at re-telling how butterflies came to be on your own.
In our story, the wiser woman tells the creator "To take the best things from what you have made, the things that give you most joy and mixed them together into something new".
For our activity today I want you to become the creator, and I want you to think of what brings you joy.
To imagine if you were the creator, and you were to create something to spread joy amongst others, what would you create? Have a thing.
What makes you happy? When you look outside, is it nature? Is it something in your house? Is it a feeling? What would you create to bring joy to others? So for me, I like it when I see a dove flying by, because we don't often see doves.
So when I do see a dove, it brings me joy and a happiness inside.
So my creation is going to based upon a dove.
So what I need you to do is have a thing, about what you are going to create.
And on your piece of paper, I want you to draw a creative bag.
Because this is what we are going to put our things inside of to create our new bit of joy.
In our story, the creator puts four things into his bag.
He puts moonlight shining on the water, a flower's delicate petals, the pollen from a flower, and a pattern of a snake's skin.
Now I want you to think about what makes you happy? It might be something similar to the creator, where you see them outside in nature.
Or, it might be something that you have in your house or with your family.
Now I have got a few examples that we can put up, and put into our creators bag.
And then I'm going to show you what I want to put in my creator's bag.
So if we think about nature, and what's outside we could use.
The scales of a rainbow fish, because they are really colourful and everyone sees them.
So you wanted something colourful, you can have scales of a rainbow fish.
Or you might think of another rainbow, or the colours of a rainbow.
Or you might think of a colourful sweet teas, or fruits hanging from a tree.
So that could be your colourful thing.
If you wanted to think about how things feel, I've gone for the feather from a peacock.
Because again they are quite colourful, but they are also really soft and quite delicate.
So I've gone for feather from a peacock, but there might be something else.
You might like the feeling of a warm blanket wrapped around you, or the feeling of a warm fire as you toast marshmallows.
So think about what might your feeling be.
Another thing from outside, is the sparkle of the stars.
Think about a night when the stars are sparkling, it's a lovely thing to have.
But again you might have the heat, from the sunlight.
Or you might quite like the feeling of rain on your skin when it's really coming down quite hard, that feeling of rain might be something you want to put in your creator's bag.
We can also have something sweet.
So honey from a beehive that's sweet and sticky but really delicious, and it's something I enjoy having so I thought honey from a beehive would be really nice.
But you might have a another idea, of something else again that's nature.
Or you can have an idea from something in your house, or something that brings you joy.
So a good idea of that is a very simple, a hug.
You might decide to put a hug in your bag of joy.
So if you combine something with a hug, that brings you joy.
Or, hot chocolate.
Mmmm! The feeling of hot chocolate might bring you joy.
Or there might be another food, or sweet, or drink that brings you joy that you might want to put in your creator's bag.
And my last idea that I have, is the sound of laughter.
Hearing other people laugh, is a really lovely feeling.
So I thought that would be a nice thing to put in my creator's bag as an idea.
But in our story, there are only four things that the creator puts in his bag.
So I'm going to choose my four, for my.
I'm going to have the feathers from a peacock, I'm going to have a hug, I'm going to have the sparkles of the stars, and I'm going to have the honey of a beehive.
So now I have the joy, a hug, sparkle of the stars, feather from a peacock, and a honey from a beehive.
Now I put all those things, into my creator's bag.
Mix em' all up, *blows* breathe some air in, and my animal of joy would be a dove.
And I would make these all come together, to create my dove.
So your activity now is to create your own, creator's bag.
You can think of lots of ideas like I did, and I want you for all your ideas to put your four, that you would like to be your main four to create your joy.
Did you enjoy creating your own bag of joy? I really enjoyed creating mine, especially about all those things that bring me joy and happiness.
It's such a nice feeling inside.
I do wonder what has been your favourite part of this unit.
My favourite part of this unit, has actually been today's lesson.
Because I really enjoyed exploring all the things that bring me joy.
Now to end today's lesson, I would like to sing a song, based on our bag of joy.
So I was thinking about mine, but then you can change it to sing it about your bag of joy.
So are you ready? It goes like this.
♪ Bag of Joy, what have you got? ♪ ♪ I've got a feather from a peacock, ♪ ♪ The sparkles from the stars, ♪ ♪ Honey from a beehive, ♪ ♪ And a big warm hug.
♪ ♪ Bag of Joy, what have you got? ♪ Have a go at singing the 'Bag of Joy' song about your bag, and see what you have put inside.
Thank you for joining me on today's lesson, and I hope you enjoyed it.
