I love everything about stories and we've got some great learning for you today.

But first I need my helper, Cedric but he just won't wake up today.

Maybe you could help me wake him up.

Could you say for me, wake up Cedric! That is a big yawn Cedric, you were tired.

Are you feeling better now? Good.

Actually, I've got a joke for you Cedric and Cedric loves my jokes.

So the joke is it's linked to our story The Magic Paintbrush.

The joke is what did the artist do before he went to bed? Drew his curtains.

It's good isn't it? Oh dear, anyway lets get ready for our learning today.

In today's lesson we're going to explore the main moods in the story of The Magic Paintbrush.

Lets have a look at our agenda for today.

We're going to start with a spelling activity.

Then we're going to play a game with moods.

Then we're going to create a mood map.

For today's lesson you'll need an exercise book or some paper, a pencil and your brilliant brain.

Why don't you pause the video now to go and collect those things? Let's get started with our spelling.

In this unit, we're looking at words that end in a Y letter but that Y makes an E sound.

Can you make an E sound for me now? Great.

Let's look at this word here a little bit closer.

Happy.

It's got two P's but that's a double consonant but it just make one puh sound.

H a puh y.

Happy.

Let's have a look at this word happy again.

Now you'll notice its got two syllables.

Hap-py.

Can you clap? Hap-py.

Well done.

I know a song which says the letter names in the word happy, would you like to hear it? I'll sing it and then you can join in the second time.

It goes like this.

Let's have a read of these words that end in Y and make that E sound and have two syllables.

I wonder if you could finish these sentences with one of our words that end in Y.

My jokes are funny that's right.

That's right.

In this unit we're going to be looking at one of the building blocks that great story writers, tellers use to help them create their stories, mood.

That's the way the story teller gets the audience to feel exactly what they want them to feel.

Across this unit we're going to be building a tool kit to help us do that.

I'm going to tell us the story of The Magic Paint Brush again now but I'm going to focus on the different moods of the story.

Now there's definitely some magic in this story so I'm going to wear my magic storytelling hat.

Now if I get stuck with the story I might use my story map to help me.

♪ It's story time, it's story time.

♪ ♪ Look, listen, wow.

♪ ♪ It's story time, it's story time.

♪ ♪ Look, listen, wow.

♪ Once upon a time, there was a young man called Ma Liang.

He was a kind man.

He was a good man, and he was a poor man.

And worked hard every day in the fields.

One night something mysterious happened.

Ma Liang had a dream.

He dreamt that an old man had given him a magic paintbrush and told him he needed to use the magic paintbrush to help the poor.

The next morning Ma Liang woke up and what was there on his desk? A magic paintbrush! Wow!.

Whatever he drew or painted came to life! From that moment on, Ma Liang decided he was going to use the paintbrush that's right, to help other people.

What was the first thing he did? He was in the fields and the people didn't have any water.

So he drew a beautiful river.

That's right.

Next he saw that people were hungry.

So he drew steaming plates of delicious food.

Then he saw some people that didn't have anywhere to live.

So he drew them the most amazing houses.

But soon everyone had heard of Ma Liang and his magic paintbrush.

So who was it who decided that they wanted to steal the magic paintbrush? That's right it was a greedy king.

I want the magic paintbrush for myself to make me even richer.

I could paint and draw whatever I wanted gold money yes! So the greedy king stole the magic paintbrush and sent Ma Liang to jail.

He wanted to show off his magic paintbrush to all his friends, the greedy king invited them to the palace, tried it out, but nothing happened.

He tried it out again, nothing happened.

How did he feel? He was furious! That's right.

So he called for Ma Liang and said I want you to draw me whatever I want and I will set you free.

Now what did Ma Liang think? He didn't know what to do.

Then he had an idea.

What did the king want him to draw, first of all? He wanted him to draw a golden mountain.

Did Ma Liang draw him a golden mountain to start off with? No.

He drew a great sea.

I don't want a sea, I want a golden mountain draw me a golden mountain.

That's right, Ma Liang did draw him a golden mountain then but far away across the sea.

Draw me a big ship, I want to get to that golden mountain straight away.

So he drew him a great ship and the greedy king and his people set off across the sea.

Now what did Ma Liang do next? That's right, he drew a great wave.

Can you join in with me with this sound effect? I love this bit.

Whoosh.

And the ship was destroyed and the greedy king and his people were never seen again.

How does our story end? That's right, Ma Liang lived a happy life where he helped other people with his magic paintbrush.

I love that story.

Could you feel all the different moods in that story? We're going to play a little game now that will help us think about different moods.

It's called a reflective, my turn, your turn.

I'm going to say a mood and I'm going to try and show it with my face and my voice and then you're going to copy.

Let's try it.

So my turn, then your turn.

Copy the word and the action.

Wonder! Fear! Suspense! Happy! Now, we're going to map the moods of the story onto our story map.

We might use some of the words we used then.

Fear, where you feel afraid.

Wonder, that moment of magic.

Wow! Suspense, when you're not sure what's going to happen next.

I'm going to use a purple polishing pen for this so that my mood notes on my map really stand out.

Now at the start of the story I decided there's a happy mood.

He helps other people, he's kind and we get to know the main character.

So I'm going to draw a smiley face as well.

You can draw a picture or you can write a word.

The next part of the story, the mood is mysterious.

So I'm going to write a question mark because it makes us wonder what's going to happen.

But I'm also going to write the word mystery.

For the next part of the story this is where he finds the magic paintbrush so I'm going to write down a big wow! For that mood of wonder.

It's making the audience feel full of magic.

And then we've got, I'm going to draw a picture as well of that wow face.

Now he decides to do good things with the magic paint brush.

So that gives us a mood of kindness, of love.

I've written the word kindness but I'm also going to draw a heart to remind us of that mood.

And then we go back to the mood of wow while he does all of these incredible things.

Draw my big wow face.

And that is the mood of wonder.

But then the story hooks you in because the next part of the story the mood changes.

Ma Liang is thrown into jail and we've got the mood of fear and sadness.

I'm choosing the word fear to write on my map.

Then we've got the mood where Ma Liang isn't sure what to do.

As a listener or a reader of the story we don't know what's going to happen.

We feel uncertain, that's why I've drawn my wiggly mouth and I'm going to write the word uncertain which means I'm not sure what's going to happen.

This carries on and this mood develops a little bit where we start wondering what is Ma Liang doing when he draws the sea? He's asked for a golden mountain.

So lot's of question marks and I'm going to use that word suspense.

We're not sure what's going to happen.

We really want to find out what's going to happen next.

What next? In our next part of the story it's that big wave.

Whoosh! And it's another moment of wow! That feeling of wonder.

Wow! And then at the final point of our story we've got our happy ending.

The final moment where we realise Ma Liang is happy and he's doing fantastic things with his magic paint brush, helping other people.

A happy mood at the end.
