- Hello super storytellers, and welcome to this English lesson.
My name is Miss ka shin.
And this is lesson five of unit five.
We know if you've been doing this unit with me already, that we are writing our very own recycled story, based on the story of Baba Yaga that we heard in unit four.
Remember, he don't know that story, or if he ever wants to hear it again, you can go back to Lesson One, unit four and have another lesson.
Today we are going to be giving our own personal opinions about the things that we have read.
That means you're going to be telling me what you think about some of the things that happen in my recycled story.
I love to give personal opinions about things I've read because it means I can talk to my friends and family about it.
I wonder, when you've read a brilliant book, who do you love to talk to about it? Can you tell me so many people that we love to talk to about reading our brilliant books.
I can't wait to get started.
So let's see what we're going to be doing in our lesson today.
We're going to start today's lesson with a spelling activity.
Then we're going to do a strategy check where we think about what we need to do to be brilliant readers today.
Then we are going to read through together and then you are going to give personal opinions about what we have read.
So you're going to think about what do you think about the things that we have read today.
For this lesson, you're going to need something to write on, as something to write with.
It would be brilliant.
If you could have some lined paper today.
You're also going to need your brilliant brain, especially because we are thinking about personal opinions, so you're not thinking about what other people think.
We want to know what you think today.
So if you need to go and get any of those things, you can pause the video now and go and get them.
Well done superstars.
You are all ready for our reading lesson today.
We're going to get started with our spelling activity.
We looked in lesson one and lesson three of this unit which you might have done with me at the all sounds spelt L-E at the end of word, my turn your turn.
Oh.
Oh, amazing job.
Here's my first word we looked at, Can you read it? Can you say it? Apple, next word.
Can you read it? Can you say it pebble, Amazing reading.
next word.
Can you read it? Can you say it? Little, Amazing.
I hope we're using our sounds really, really well to our reading.
Got three more words.
Okay, can you read it? Can you say it? Cycle.
Next word Can you read it? Can you say it? Simple.
Last one, can you read it? Can you say it? Purple.
fantastic job.
for our spending activities today, I have got a picture here.
And in this picture, there is a word that has the old sound at the end spelled L-E.
In a moment, you're going to pause the video and you're going to look at the picture What is in that picture? That has an old sound at the end? And then can you try and write down how you think you might spell that word remembering that we are looking at the old sound spelt L-E.
So pause the video now see if you can find that word and write it down.
Fantastic super spellers.
Did you get the word? It was was, whale.
my turn your turn whale, whale.
Amazing jobs super spellers.
And this is about W-H-A-L-E.
You can now pause the video again and check your spelling of whale.
You can give yourself a big tick if you got that spelling right.
And if you didn't, you can copy this one down so you'll know next time so pause the video now to check your spelling.
Well done sweep speller let's look at my next picture, there is another word in this picture with an all sound at the end spelled L-E you need to pause the video and see if you can figure out what that word is and can you write it down.
So pause the video to do this spelling activity.
Well done super stars.
Let's see if you've got that word.
Juggle.
my turn your turn, juggle, juggle and this is spelt J-U-G-G-L-E Pause the video now to see if you've spelt it right to give yourself a big tick or if you need to correct your spelling for next time.
well done super stars.
Let's go on to our last one.
Oh, this one is a little bit trickier you really need to think about all the different things that this animal might be.
So pause the video now see if you can find the all word and write it down.
Well done super spellers it was beetle, fantastic.
Let's look at our Spelling B-E-E-T-L-E Pause the video again to see if you have spelt that right and give yourself a big tick or see if you need to correct it for next time.
Well done super spellers.
Now we're going to get started with our reading.
So first, we're going to check our strategy.
There are three things that you're going to need to be an amazing reader stay, so you can give some personal opinions.
You're going to need your magnet eyes to follow through as I read, and then for you to read yourself, So show me your magnet eyes.
Fantastic.
You're going to need amazing listening ears to listen to me read it first.
And then you're going to need your finger to go back and find the evidence for what you think.
So you might be able to find a word that helps you with your personal opinion.
Show me your magnet eyes.
Show me your listening ears Show me your evidence finding finger.
Fantastic, you are so ready for our reading activity.
So let's read together and then you are going to give some personal opinions.
Here is our first extract.
This is from the story that I have written.
That is based on Baba Yaga.
And remember my story if you've done the other essence in this unit, has got Elly ambassador in it.
So I'm going to read that to you You get your magnets eyes ready on the first word.
Once upon a time, there a girl called Elly.
She lived in a small, cosy, igloo, surrounded by enormous snow-capped mountains.
She could hear the harsh wind wailing, but she felt safe and comfortable underneath her blanket.
She was cuddling Buster and watching the delicate snowflakes dance.
Get your magnet eyes ready, I'm going to be that team again.
Once upon a time, there lift a girl called Elly.
She lived in a small, cosy igloo surrounded by enormous snow capped-mountains.
She could hear the harsh wind wailing that she felt safe and comfortable, underneath her blanket.
She was cuddling Buster and watching the delicate snowflakes dance.
well done for following with your magnet eyes and listening with your listening ear.
Here is my question that I want to know your opinion about.
Would you like to stay in Elly's igloo? I've got some sentence stems to help.
you say I would like to stay in Ellys igloo because or I wouldn't like to stay Ellys because and then I've got another sentence stem if you really want to push yourself today, which is the word Mm makes me think.
so you can say Uu the word small makes me think or the word safe makes me think.
So you need to pause the video and read it again and use your evidence finding finger to say why you think this about whether you would or wouldn't like stay in Ellys igloo.
so you can pause the video now.
Well done super story tellers, I would love to know whether you would or wouldn't like stay in Ellys igloo.
here's what I thought.
I would really, really like to stay in Ellys igloo because there were lots of words in our extract that made it sound like a really lovely place to be.
The igloo is described as small and cosy.
So that definitely sounds like a nice place to visit.
And Elly feels safe and comfortable there.
And I'd like to feel like that as well.
If I went to visit somebody, I also loved the idea that she was cuddling up to Buster and watching the delicate snowflakes.
That sounds like a lovely way for me to spend my time.
I was a bit worried about the harsh wind, but it sounds like she can hear that in the distance and everything's okay inside her igloo.
Well done super story tellers let's have a look at our next extract.
oh this is a bit of the story where Elly sees the Yeti.
She snuck up on him.
She appears around the corner of the cage.
And there he is.
I'm going to read it out loud twice.
So get your magnet eyes ready on the first word Elly.
Elly froze.
There was the Yeti.
He was as tall as a tree with long, strong arms hanging down the side of his hairy body.
As he walked across the cave, his huge feet thumped, making the walls shake and rumble.
His eyebrows were knotted in concentration.
Staring up Buster.
He rubbed his hands together and licked his leathery lips.
Oh, my goodness.
He's such a frightening monster.
I'm going to read it one more time.
Get your magnet eyes and your listening ears ready.
Elly froze.
Huh! There was the Yeti.
He was as tall as a tree, with long, strong arms hanging down the side of his hairy body.
As he walks across the cave his huge feet thumped, making the walls shake and rumble.
His eyebrows were knotted in concentration.
Staring at Buster.
He rubbed his hands together and licked his leathery lips.
Oh, my goodness, I think my next question is quite a tricky one.
I want to know, what would you be the most frightened off? You need to get your evidence finding finger, and find the description of the Yeti you would find the most frightening.
So you might say I would be most frightened of his body because, I would be most frightened of him rubbing his hands together, because to pause the video.
Read it again.
Yourself and look for evidence with your brilliant evidence finding finger.
Well done super storytellers.
I would love to know what you would find the most frightening about the Yeti.
Here's the bit that I found the most frightening, staring at buster.
He rubbed his hands together and licked his leathery lips.
I have to say, as a reader, that is the part that made me think, Oh my goodness, he's definitely going to eat Buster.
And if he looked at me like that, I would feel really frightened.
I would think there's no way out.
So I found that the most frightening.
Let's have a look at our last extract.
This is the part of the story when Elly gets back home.
We know that our recycled stories that we've been looking at have really happy satisfying endings, just like Baba Yaga.
I'm going to read it first.
Get your magnet eyes ready? She ran and she ran and she ran all the way back to her igloo.
She burst through the door and took a moment to catch her breath whilst holding Buster tightly.
At that moment, her parents came home.
How was your day? Asked her mother.
Fine, said Elly.
Well done, last time you get magnet eyes and listening ears, here we go.
She ran and she ran and she ran all the way back to her igloo.
She passed through the door and took a moment to catch her breath, whilst holding Buster tightly.
At that moment, her parents came home.
How was your day? Asked her mother.
Fine.
Said Elly.
Okay, that's the end of my story.
I wanted to know has Elly made a good choice here? Has she made a good choice by not telling her mother what has happened.
So you could say, I think she has.
I think she hasn't made a good choice.
Because, so pause the video, it's a bit harder to look for evidence.
You just need to think about Ellys choice and what you might have done.
Pause the video, see if you can answer this question.
Well done super storytellers.
I think that Elly hasn't made a very good choice here.
I understand that she doesn't want her mum to be annoyed with her because, she hasn't listened to her advice or her rules, but do you think should have told her about the very frightened day that she's had, especially if there's any chance yet he still out there? So I don't think she's made a good choice here.
I wonder what you think.
I've got a challenge task here for you.
One more thing to give Your personal opinion about Elly is a sensible character.
Do you agree or disagree with this statement? There are two sentence stems to help you say, I agree with this statement because, or I disagree with this statement because, see if you can think about everything that happens in the story, Does Elly seem like a sensible character to you or not? So you can pause the video now and have a go at your challenge.
my goodness, I am so impressed with you, having got the challenge.
I really think Elly is a great character, but I don't think she's a sensible character.
So I disagree with this statement, because Ellys does a lot of things that aren't sensible, like leaving when her mom tells him not to taking Buster with her.
And even helping those animals is very, very kind, but I don't know if it's The most sensible thing to do, it did work out well for her, but I think she could have made a better choice about whether to help them on the way or whether she could have got to Buster a little bit quicker.
So that's my opinion.
But I wonder what your opinion was.
I would love to see some of your personal opinions about what we've read So remember, you can always share your work with Oak National.
If you'd like to, please ask your parent or carer to share your work on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, tagging @OakNational and #LearnwithOak.

So hope to see for our next lesson.
Bye.
