Hello everybody.
It is me Miss McCartney.
And I am really excited for our lesson today, because we are going to read a little bit more about our story.
And then we are going to find some key information and you are going to have the chance to challenge some of our statements as well.
Storytelling superstars.
For our lesson today, you will need a piece of paper or something to write on, a pencil or something to write with, and your wonderful storytelling brains.
If you need to stop the video and go and collect any of those things, pause now.
Let's have a look at what we are going to be learning today.
We are going to start with a spelling activity.
Then we are going to play a retell story game, and then we are going to do some reading, and focus on retrieval and finish with a deep thinking question.
Let's get started with our spelling.
Today we are going to make some acrostic poems using our grapheme w r for our phoneme wr.
Let's have a little look.
We have the word, write.
My turn, your turn.
Write, your turn.
Wrath, your turn.
Wrong, your turn.
And wreck, your turn.
Brilliant pronunciation.
I have a little poem here, with my words that has the grapheme wr.
You can see my word is write.
And I have right write, written vertically down my page.
And I have created a little sentence, for each of the letters.
For W, I have created the word, wait until your pencil is sharp, because if you are writing you need to wait until your pencil is sharp.
Then for R, I have made the word read, and then written, read your writing back, because it is really important, when we are writing, that we read our writing back.
For I , I have created the word imagine awesome stories.
For T, I have written tell your stories to a friend.
That is what being a wonderful storyteller is all about.
And for E, I have just written the word, enjoy, because we should enjoy being a superstar storyteller.
What I would like you to do, is to choose one of the words that are in pink and make your own acrostic poem, writing the letters vertically and coming up with a little sentence for each letter.
Pause your video now to complete.
Excellent work everybody.
Could you hold up your acrostic poem, so that I can see it.
Ah, wonderful.
I can see our learners have all chosen different words, and created wonderful poems to help them remember the spelling.
Well done everybody.
Give yourselves some spelling shine to make yourself feel all warm and fuzzy.
Great job, everybody.
We are going to go through our reading strategy to strategy check.
First of all, you need to make sure your magnet eyes are always on the words.
Secondly, you need to make sure you are doing good listening, especially listening to those words that you might not know how to say.
And thirdly, you need your reading finger ready to be following along as I read.
Fantastic everybody.
Let's get started.
We are going to learn a little bit more about the story.
Make sure you have got your reading finger ready.
Kartikeya had never been to a desert before, although he had always wanted to go.
It was so much hotter than he imagined.
He couldn't roll around in the sand because it burnt your skin.
What did people come here for? After some time, he became really confused about the direction that he was walking in.
Had he already passed that small, dried plant or was it a new one? Kartikeya wiped the sweat off his brow and started to shake his head.
His brain was becoming quite tired and fuzzy and he tried to clear it for clarity.
To try to think clearly.
Surely there must be some way that he could check which direction he had come from.
Looking behind him, he noticed his footsteps in the sand.
As he took a closer look, he saw another set of footprints.
This made him jump.
Ooh.
We have learned some more about Kartikeya, being in the desert, which was one of Miss.
McCartney's new settings.
Let's find out what we are going to be doing next.
Kartikeya was excited to visit the desert.
You need to agree or disagree, and then you need to provide some evidence, and actually you can also create your own challenge.
I'm going to model this now.
I'm going to say, hmm, I disagree with the statement because Kartikeya was really hot and bothered.
Evidence to support my opinion is, his brain was becoming all tired and fuzzy.
I would like to challenge the statement, by suggesting that at the end Kartikeya jumped.
Actually I needed to think a little bit more carefully about the evidence at the beginning of the story.
You can go back and read the story again, if you want to, and then think about if you agree or disagree with the statement, "Kartikeya was excited to visit the desert".
Pause your video now.
Go and check your reading and come up with your answer.
Fantastic.
I saw lots of people disagreeing with Miss.
McCartney.
Lots of people said that they agreed, Kartikeya was excited to visit the desert because at the beginning it said, he had always wanted to go.
If you said that, you were correct.
Well done.
I heard some people challenging the statement, because they said I would like to challenge the statement by suggesting that at the beginning, Kartikeya was excited, but at the end he was very exhausted and tired.
Well done everybody.
Let's read the next section of our story.
Kartikeya was well loved in the castle.
People often retold each other stories about his war victories.
The wars he had won.
Even though he was getting older, he still jumped, skipped and ran about the palace to show people how strong he was.
Often in the palace gardens he would pretend to battle with children and they would laugh and shout, "more, more!".
Kartikeya loved his brother, Ganesh, but he wished that he was more fun.
All Ganesh did was sit and read all day, every day.
What could he do to get Ganesh into the palace gardens? He thought long and hard and then he decided to find some musicians.
He asked them to play Ganesh's favourite music in the hope it would entice him out into the garden.
Entice is a little bit like this action.
It means convince somebody, show them how good something is so that they want to do it.
Let's read our next statement.
It says, "Kartikeya cared what others thought about him".
Hmm.
You might need to go back and have another read by yourself, if you would like to check.
You have got your sentence stems. I agree, disagree with this statement, because evidence to support my opinion is, I would like to challenge this statement by.
Pause your video now and use the sentence stems to agree or disagree with the statement.
I would like you to whisper your answer to the screen, 'cause I would love to hear what you think.
Whisper now.
Ooh, I heard someone say, they do agree with the statement, because Kartikeya still ran and jumped around the palace to show that he was strong.
But somebody else said they disagreed, because actually he didn't mind being really silly with the children in the palace garden when he pretended to battle them.
Fantastic.
I had a challenge.
Someone challenged to say Kartikeya does think that people care about, Kartikeya does care about what others think about him because he wants to be seen as strong, but actually he cares more about his brother Ganesh.
Fantastic challenge, let's give you some shine.
I wonder if you are at home, you could give your friends some shine.
Well done.
Let's read the next part of the story.
Ganesh worried about his brother.
He had regularly defended the kingdom, but now he was getting older and weaker.
Ganesh often saw Kartikeya rubbing his legs and grimacing, when he thought nobody was watching.
It was silly that he ran all over the castle and challenged children to battles.
One day he was really going to hurt himself.
Why couldn't he settle down with a nice book and transport himself to another world? But, Ganesh knew that it was no good.
Despite how hard he tried, Kartikeya just would not sit down in the library.
How could he convince him to sit down and take a rest? He needed a plan to make Kartikeya sooooo tired that he would have to sit down and take a rest.
Then he would realise just how nice it was.
Hmm.
We have two brothers who really care about each other.
Let's investigate our next statement.
Ganesh thought that his brother was foolish.
If you think someone is foolish, then you think they are silly and they do not make good choices.
Use your sentence stems, I agree or disagree with the statement, because evidence to support my opinion is.
I would like to challenge the statement by.
If you need to go back and read the text again by yourself, you can do so.
Pause your video now to agree or disagree with the statement.
Excellent.
I would love to hear some of your wonderful ideas.
This time, I would like you to use your most confident voice.
Tell me your statement using your most confident voice.
Wow.
We have some really confident readers.
Well done everybody.
I heard someone say, I agree that Ganesh thought that his brother was foolish because he thought Ganesh challenging children to battles was really silly.
But somebody else disagreed and said, actually Ganesh didn't think he was foolish, he was just trying to look after his brother.
And somebody else came up with their challenge and said, even though Ganesh did think his brother was a bit foolish, he also thought lots of other wonderful things about his brother, such as being really proud.
You are reading superstars.
Well done everybody.
We are going to do our crown shine now.
Get your crown ready and shine all around your head to celebrate your success today.
Let's have a look at our deep thinking question to finish our reading lesson.
If you had to try and trick Kartikeya into taking a break, what would you do? Pause your video now and have a really deep think, I'm going to have my thinking face on as well.
Hmm.
If I would go and trick Kartikeya into taking a break, what would I do? I know what I would do.
I would ask all the children in the castle to put on a performance, and Kartikeya I think would be really excited because he has a really good relationship with the children.
He would sit down to watch the performance.
Can you whisper what your trick would be to me? Ooh.
Somebody else said they would trick Kartikeya by reading him a book so that he understood how wonderful and relaxing they were.
You have done such a brilliant job today everybody.
I am really proud of you.
If you'd like to, please ask your parent or carer to share your work on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter tagging @OakNational and @TeachTMcCartney, #LearnwithOak.
I hope to see all of our wonderful learners soon.
