Hello, everyone! My name is Miss Barron.

Now, you know that I love stories.

I love telling stories.

I love writing stories, and I love making up stories.

So, it makes sense that I also love reading stories.

Today, we are going to practise a really key reading skill, and that is to predict.

We are going to make predictions about what we think might happen next in a story.

So, in today's lesson, first we are going to do a quick spelling activity.

Then, we're going to do our strategy check to help us be amazing readers today.

We're going to read the text together, and then we're going to practise making some predictions.

So, in today's lesson, you will need an exercise book or a piece of paper to write on, a pencil to write with, and if you can, download and print the reading extract now, but don't worry if you can't.

You can just read along on the screen with me.

So, pause the video now and get those things if you need to.

Brilliant job.

You are back with everything you need to begin the learning today.

So, let's start with our spelling activity.

So, let's take a look at the words in the table on your screen.

You can see that all of the letters have been jumbled up.

I would like you to have a go at unjumbling the letters to spell those words correctly.

And here's a clue.

These are some of the words that we have been learning in the last few lessons.

These are words where the 'uh' sound is spelled with the letter 'o.

' I wonder if you can unjumble those letters to spell the words correctly.

Pause the video now, and have a go at that.

Fantastic effort! Shall we see how you got on? So, these should be the words that you have written down after unjumbling those letters.

So, you should have the words: Son.

Monday.

And remember, Monday is spelled with a capital letter because it's the name of a day of the week.

Month.

You can read them with me if you like.

Other.

Love.

Brother.

Mother.

Nothing.

And above.

So, all of those words have the sound 'uh' in them, but that 'uh' sound is spelled with the letter 'o.

' Now, these are tricky words.

We can't sound them out, so we just have to practise spelling them to remember them.

They're really important words.

They come up all the time.

So, it's really useful if we learn how to spell them.

Now, then.

Let's begin with our predicting today.

We are going to do a prediction warm-up linked to my recycled story.

I think you know it pretty well by now, but you know that the problem in my story is that all of the stories in the world have been taken.

They have been stolen by angry Story Bat who has taken them to his underground cave, and all of the humans in the world are bored.

They're grumpy.

They're so unhappy, moaning and whining all the time.

So, I would like you to have a think about what you think Story Bat would do next after Hummingbird and her other helpers have taken all of his stories back to the humans.

What do you predict he will do next? So, let's have a look at the different predictions you can choose from.

Well, I would like you to rank these predictions in order from least likely to most likely.

So, least likely means you don't think it's going to happen.

You don't think it's very possible at all, and most likely means that you think there is a really good chance of it happening.

You think it's very possible.

So, should we read the different predictions? The first one is: Story bat takes revenge on Hummingbird and the other animals.

Now, revenge means to get payback.

What do you think? Do you think Story Bat is the kind of bat that would do something like that? Let's read the next one.

He finds something else to take control of and keep for himself.

And the final one.

He see's the errors of his ways, which means he sees the mistakes he's made, and he changes.

He moves out of the cave and lives in trees so he can listen to the stories told by humans.

Now, I want you to think about what you already know about Story Bat.

What is he like as a character? And I'd like you to use that information to help you rank these predictions from least likely to most likely.

So, pause the video now and have a go at that.

Fantastic! You're back.

So, I would love to know your thoughts.

Go and tell me to your screen, which one do you think is the most likely? So, the one that you think will happen.

Go on and tell me to your screen.

"I think the most likely prediction is.

." Tell me to your screen now.

Really interesting.

So, some of you said that you think Story Bat would definitely take revenge because you know that he is evil and he is angry.

He is not going to want to let those animals get away with it.

Some of you thought that he's selfish and greedy, so he's going to want to take control of something else and keep something else for himself.

And a few of you did think the last one was the most likely, that maybe there was hope yet for Story Bat and he would change his ways and reform.

He would become a person who would join in with the fun and the sharing and the teamwork of human life telling stories together.

I wonder.

I wonder, I think maybe I agree with the first two most.

I think the first two are the most likely because Story Bat is just really evil and angry and wants to keep everything for himself.

It would be interesting to write another story, wouldn't it? A sequel, which is a story about what happens next, about what story bat gets up to.

So, let's carry on with our predicting today, and we're going to do our strategy check.

So, as we ready today, what do we do if we come across a word that is difficult to read? We know that we need to sound out words if we can.

We are going to look at the letters, make the sounds, and blend them together.

Do that with me? We're going to look at the letters, make the sounds, and blend them together.

Fantastic.

Now, if it's a tricky word or a sight word, we can't sound it out, can we? We can't sound it out, so we have to see it and say it.

See it and say it.

We just have to remember those, don't we? And we are going to make sure that if we don't understand something that we've read, we go back and read the sentence again.

What do we do? We go back and read the sentence again.

Fantastic.

So, those things are going to help us with our reading of the words today.

Now, let's have a think about the different strategies we can use to help us predict.

We know that the reading skill we are practising today is prediction.

These are some things that we can do to help us do that really well.

We can use what we know and the clues in the text to help us work out what might happen next.

So, that's really important.

We're not just going to guess and pull ideas out of thin air, random guesses.

No.

We are going to use what we know and the clues in the text to help us work out what we think will happen next.

And there's a next one.

So, we're going to refer back to the text to justify or to support our prediction.

So, going back to the text is really important when we're predicting.

We're not just guessing.

Now, then.

It's time to read the text and make some predictions.

So, let's begin that.

Okay, now read with me.

So.

In the beginning, when the world was created, there was sun, there was earth, and there was sea, but there was no rain.

Now, which of these predictions do you agree with? Humans started arguing because they were bored.

Humans were starving because the crops could not grow.

The seas, rivers, and lakes were drying up, and the only source of drinking water was deep in the ground.

Hmm, I wonder.

Pause the video now and have a think about which of those predictions you agree with.

I wonder if there's one that you agree with more than all of the others.

Pause the video now, and have a think about that.

Fantastic.

Now, I am ready to hear your thoughts.

Go on, then.

Tell me, which one do you agree with? Or, it might be more than one.

So, tell me to your screen now, say, "I agree with 'mm' because.

." I can hear lots of different opinions.

That's really interesting.

Some of you are saying that you agree with all of them.

Some of you agree with two.

Some of you just agree with one.

So, let's have a think about those predictions, shall we? Let's look at the first one.

Humans started arguing because they were bored.

Do you think that humans would be bored if they didn't have any rain? Mm, I'm not sure.

I don't think that makes sense.

I don't think boredom goes with not having any rain.

Boredom might go with not having any stories, not having any entertainment, not having any friends, but I think not having rain.

That's a more serious need, isn't it? So, I don't think the first one is a very likely prediction.

I don't think they would be arguing because they were bored.

Let's have a look at the next one.

Humans were starving because the crops could not grow.

Now, I think that is really likely because we know that plants need water, don't they? Crops need water in order to grow, and without water to make the crops grow, then humans, animals can't eat.

So, that's a really likely prediction.

And let's have a look at the last one.

The seas, rivers, and lakes were drying up, and the only source of drinking water was deep in the ground.

Now, we know that if it doesn't rain, then it is very likely that the seas and the rivers and the lakes are all going to dry up, and humans would have to dig deep, deep, deep into the ground to find anything to drink.

So, I agree that those last two predictions are very likely if there is no rain.

I wonder if you agreed with me on that, too.

Then, let's carry on reading.

Read with me.

Humans and animals were starving because the crops couldn't grow, so they had nothing to eat.

We were right, weren't we? That is something that we predicted! Humans and animals were starving because the crops couldn't grow, so they had nothing to eat.

They spent all day, every day, digging deep wells into the ground to find drinking water.

This was backbreaking work.

The humans were tired, and many of them became ill.

Now, if work is backbreaking, it means that it's so hard, you feel like you're going to break your back doing it.

Gosh, so a really difficult situation for the humans there.

How do you predict they solve this problem? So, they're starving, they've got nothing to eat, they spend all day long digging deep wells into the ground just to find some water to drink.

It's backbreaking work.

Many of them are becoming ill.

How do you predict they solve this problem? Have a think about that, and you can frame your answer using the sentence stem, "I predict they solve this by.

." So, pause the video and have a think about how you think they're going to solve the problem.

Okay, I am ready to hear your thoughts.

Go on, tell me to the screen now.

Say, "I predict they solve this by.

." Tell me to your screen.

I'm hearing all sorts of different predictions.

I'm hearing some people say that they are going to go up into the mountains and find the rain guardian and get him to give back the rain.

I'm hearing some people say that they are going to go and visit the Prime Minister and demand that he do something about it.

I'm hearing some people say that they are going to dive down to the bottom of the sea and pull the plug from the sea bed and get all of the water from the sea that they can use on land.

All sorts of different ideas! Now, shall we have a read and see which is correct? Read with me.

The humans called an urgent meeting to which they invited all the animals and birds of the forest to ask for help.

"We must find a way to release the rain from the sky," exclaimed the human chief.

Daring Eagle stepped forward and volunteered to help, as he always did when anyone was in need.

"I have heard that all the rain is guarded by the cloud giant at the top of the cloud mountain.

He is trying to build the world's most beautiful garden up there so is keeping all the rain for himself." Gosh! Well, I don't know if anyone predicted that.

Did anyone predict that the rain was guarded by the cloud giant at the top of the cloud mountain? Well, that is what's happened in the story.

The cloud giant has got all the rain.

I wonder how they're going to get it back from him.

So, I would like you to rank these predictions on the screen in order from least likely to most likely.

So, which do you think is not really possible at all? What's the next least likely? And then, what do you think could happen? And finally, which one do you think is really possible? Or there might be more than one.

You're going to rank them in order.

So, let's have a read of them.

The first prediction.

The humans choose Worm, who offers to slither up the mountain to reach the giant and then tickle him to release the rain.

The second prediction.

Eagle convinces him that a beautiful garden cannot grow at the top of the mountain where there is no soil.

The third prediction.

Eagle invites the cloud giant to share the beauty of all the gardens on earth and promises that they will make a special garden on earth where he can visit without being seen.

And the final prediction.

Eagle decides to abandon humans and stay with the giant.

So, abandon means to leave.

Eagle decides to abandon humans and stay with the giant.

Mm.

I wonder.

So, which one do you think is the least likely? And, then rank them going up to the most likely, the most possible.

So, there are your sentence stems in the green box to help you.

"I think the least likely prediction is.

." "The next least likely is.

." "Then.

." And then, "The most likely is.

." So, pause the video and have a think about that.

Think about what you know about daring Eagle.

What kind of character is he? So, use that to help you support your prediction.

You can go back to the text, as well, to see if there is anything in there to help support your answer.

So, pause the video now, and have a go at that.

Okay, brilliant.

You're back.

Now, really good effort having a go at doing this.

This is quite tricky.

So, we have to think about what we know about the character of daring Eagle to help us.

Now, what do you think? Which of those do you think is the most likely prediction? I'd like you to tell me which one you think is the most likely.

Tell me to your screen now.

Say, "The mostly likely is 'mm' because.

." Tell me to your screen.

Ah, I see.

So, most of you think that either number two or number three is the most likely.

You said that you didn't think number one was very likely.

Why would the humans choose Worm when they can choose Eagle? Eagle's already volunteered.

They know that he's daring.

It says in the text daring Eagle, doesn't it? Also, it says that he's going to slither up the mountain.

Now, worms. We know how slowly worms move.

So, that would take forever! Humans can't afford to wait that long, can they? And then, tickle him.

Hmm, I don't know whether that would work.

So, you said that number one was the least likely, and I agree.

So, let's have a look.

Which one did you think was the next least likely? Another one that you didn't think was going to happen? Well, you told me you though it was number four.

Eagle decides to abandon humans and stay with the giant.

So, you said to me, "well, that's not Eagle's character.

Eagle likes to help.

Eagle always steps up to help when it's needed." It said that in the text, didn't it? So, that's not very likely that he just leaves the humans to stay with the giant.

So, you thought that numbers two and three were the most likely predictions, and I agree.

So, let's have a look at number two.

Eagle convinces him that a beautiful garden cannot grow at the top of the mountain where there is no soil.

Absolutely true.

We know that a garden, a beautiful garden, isn't going to grow up there where it's all rocky and dry.

The giant needs soil.

So, maybe that would convince him to release the rain.

And then most of you said that you thought this one was the most likely, that Eagle invites the cloud giant to share the beauty of all the gardens on earth and promises they will make a special garden for him where he can visit without being seen.

Now, if giant wants a beautiful garden more than anything else in the world, it seems likely that he would do something like that.

Then, he gets all the gardens on earth, plus a special one just for himself.

Now, let's read the next part of the story together.

Ready? Let's see if we were right with what we predicted.

Let's read.

Eagle soared up into the sky and flew as fast as he could to the cloud mountain.

At the very top, he found the home of the cloud giant.

The giant was sitting on his doorstep with his head in his hands, crying.

Eagle was surprised.

He hadn't known what to expect, but it certainly wasn't this.

"Cloud giant," he said.

"I need to talk to you." "Hello," replied the giant.

"How lovely to meet you!" "How polite!" thought Eagle.

"You have all of the rain and the humans and animals on earth are dying.

Please let us have some rain or else we shall not survive." Now, then.

Based on what we've just read, how do you predict the cloud giant reacts? Now, I would like you not to rank them this time, but to decide which of these predictions you think is most likely.

So, the most possible.

You're just going to pick one.

So, let's have a read of them.

The giant attacks Eagle and kills him.

He turns round, goes into his house, and shuts the door behind him.

Giant suggests that Eagle carry all of the clouds on his back knowing that all the rain inside them would make them too heavy for him, so he would never make it home.

And the final one.

The giant feels bad that he had been selfish and hadn't thought about the humans.

He offers to help.

So, which one of those do you think is the most likely and why, given what we know about cloud giant? So, I would like you to go back and read the piece of text again, and find some evidence in there to support your answer.

What is it that the text tells us about cloud giant that's going to help us predict what he might do? So, pause the video and have a think about that.

So, go on.

Tell me which of those you think is most likely and why.

Say, "I agree with 'mm' because.

." Tell me to your screen now.

Again, really interesting.

Some different opinions, but nobody thinks the first one is the most likely.

The giant attacks Eagle and kills him.

You didn't think that was very likely because in the text, it tells us how polite giant is.

It tells us what he says.

He says, "Hello, how lovely to meet you." So, he doesn't seem like the kind of person who would get really angry and attack and kill Eagle.

Now, then.

Let's have a look at the next one.

He turns round, goes into his house, and shuts the door behind him.

Again, that seems like the action of somebody who is quite rude, aggressive, short-tempered, and that doesn't really fit what we know about giant's character, does it? We know that giant is really polite, so doesn't seem like he would behave like that.

Now, let's have a look at number three.

Giant suggests that Eagle carry all of the clouds on his back but knowing that all of the rain inside them would make them too heavy for him, so he'd never make it home.

Again, that seems like a mean thing to do, very calculating and cunning and mean.

So, it doesn't seem likely that giant would do that, either.

That's not his character.

That's not what we know about him.

So, the last one is the most likely, isn't it? That giant feels bad that he had been selfish and hadn't thought about the humans.

He offers to help.

So, I think that because it says in the text that giant was sitting on his doorstep crying that he'd just been so wrapped up in his own problems that he just hadn't thought about the humans down on earth.

Shall we have a look at that evidence in the text to support our answer? Here it is, look.

In grey.

Sitting on his doorstep with his head in his hands, crying.

So maybe he's just had so much to worry about, whatever it is that's upsetting him, he just hadn't had time to give the humans down on earth any thought.

And there it is in grey, how polite he is.

"Hello," replied the giant.

"How lovely to meet you!" And then Eagle's thoughts, "How polite!" thought Eagle.

So, we know that the giant is really pleased to see Eagle.

He's polite when he meets him.

So, it doesn't make sense that he would be mean or aggressive or rude.

Now, then.

Let's carry on reading, shall we? And find out how giant does react.

Let's see if any of our predictions are right.

Read with me.

The cloud giant looked up in surprise.

"Oh.

I hadn't even thought about the humans down on earth.

I feel terrible.

I didn't know.

Do you think they will every forgive me?" Eagle bowed at giant's feet.

"Thank you," he said gratefully.

"We are forever in your debt." Which means that they will forever owe him.

"How can we repay you? I can see that you're upset - maybe I can help you somehow.

What's wrong?" So, we were right with our prediction, weren't we? Giant hadn't even thought about the humans down on earth, but he feels terrible, doesn't he? So, we know that giant has a good heart, and he wants forgiveness.

"Do you think they will ever forgive me?" So, he's not a mean angry giant.

He is misunderstood.

He is actually a kind-hearted giant, isn't he, who wants to do good.

So, let's find out what happens next.

Read with me? "My garden won't grow up here," sobbed giant.

"The ground is too rocky and dry.

No matter how much rain I pour on it, it's no use.

Nothing grows." Eagle suddenly had a thought.

"I can help," he cried happily.

"We will build you a beautiful garden in the forest.

It will be especially for you and you can visit whenever you like without anyone seeing you.

Would you like that?" So, we predicted that earlier on, didn't we? We predicted that Eagle would offer him a beautiful garden down on earth.

They would offer to build him one, somewhere where he could go without being seen.

So, that prediction is correct, isn't it? Now, this is your last question today.

What do you predict the humans say when Eagle returns with this news? Eagle has made a promise to cloud giant, hasn't he? He's promised to build him a beautiful garden down on earth.

Now, what do you predict the humans will say when they find out about this? Pause the video now, and have a think about that.

Okay, again, I am really interested to hear your thoughts.

So, tell me to your screen.

Say, " I predict that.

." Again, so interesting! Some different predictions there.

Some of you think that the humans are going to be really furious.

The eagle has made a promise without talking to them first.

And some of you think that the humans are going to be forgiving, and they're going to agree that they're going to think that Eagle has done the right thing in order to save them and get the rain.

Now, I'm not going to tell you what happens next in the story because I would like you to do this.

This is your independent challenge at the end of today's lesson.

I would like you to have a go at writing the next part of the story with your predicted ending.

So, what do you predict the humans say and do when Eagle returns with this news? So, pause the video and have a go at writing the last part of the story.

Write your predicted ending.

Pause the video and have a go at that.

Brilliant job today! You have worked really hard on your prediction, and what I'm really impressed with is that you have gone back to the text to find evidence to support your predictions.

That's really important.

When we predict, we don't just guess.

We use what we know already.

We use our existing knowledge about the text or about the world that we live in and we go back to the text to find clues and evidence to support our predictions.

So, well done for doing that today! And that brings us to the end of our learning.

Now, at the end of this unit, I would love to read your predicted endings.

So, when we get to lesson 10, I will tell you how you can share them with me.

So, keep hold of them until then.

But until then, or until the next lesson even, I will see you in lesson six, and I would like you to carry on reading stories, carry on telling stories, writing stories, and making up stories.

So, I'll leave you with that.

Bye!.
