Hello everyone, and welcome to lesson five in our unit about our created story.
In today's lesson, we are going to be focusing on reading our story and using our summarising skills.
I'm going to summarise my day so far to you and I wonder if you can summarise your day back to me.
So, in summary, today, I have had a good day.
I had a delicious breakfast.
I worked really hard, and I'm hoping to go on a walk later before dinner.
I didn't tell you everything that happened in my day.
I gave you an overall mood and vibe.
I told you some of the main and standout event.
Can you summarise your day to me? That's a fantastic summary and sounds like a really good day.
In today's lesson, you're going to need a piece of paper and something to write with.
You're going to need your brain switched on ready to do some summarising.
If you don't have a pencil or a pen or a piece of paper, pause the video now, go and get it and then press play when you're ready to start.
Today, we're going to start with a spelling activity.
I wonder if you can remember our new spelling rule.
After that, we're going to do our strategy check where we remember how we read really well, but also what our summarising skill is.
We're then going to read parts of my creative story together.
And we're going to use that to practise summarising.
Our spelling rule at the moment is the er sound spelt O-R after the letter W.
Can you remember any of the words that have that sound spelt O-R in them? Have a little think, so it would be, w, er, Can you think of anything? Fantastic.
W, er, m, w, er, ld, there's lots out there.
We are going to play a little game.
You have some letter pieces at the bottom.
And from them I would like you to make as many words as you can with the er sound.
So all of our words are going to start probably with W-O-R, but it's up to you to use the letter pieces to form other words afterwards.
I would like you to pause here and have a go and once you think you've found as many words as you can, press play and I'll show you the ones that I managed to make.
I found word, worm, work, worse, worth, world, worms loads of them.
Did you find those? Were there any others you found that I didn't get? We're getting really good at this spelling rule now, aren't we? For our strategy check today, I asked for some help from my friend at the summarising seal.
He is an expert at using this reading skill, so I thought he might be able to help us out today.
He reminded me that to summarise, you have to pick out the main idea and the key points from a discussion or a piece of writing.
Today we're going to be using our summarising skills to focus on a piece of writing.
It's important that we also remember how we use our reading skills when we're looking at a piece of text.
We're going to be following along with our eyes.
We're going to be listening for the tone of voice, but also for keywords that jump out, and if it helps us to follow along with our finger whilst it's being read.
Apollo was the God of Sun, Light and Music.
All light on Earth shone because of him and every musical note was created by him.
Apollo had a beautiful, golden harp that played the sweetest music ever heard.
He loved it more than anything.
One day Apollo was dancing on Earth to the harp's beautiful music when Hades, God of Death appeared in his flaming chariot.
He picked up the harp and took it down under Earth to his home in the Underworld.
The summarising seal has a question for us.
She asked, what was the most important point in that paragraph? Was it that Apollo liked dancing, the harp was stolen by Hades or that the harp was golden.
Now all three of these things might be true, but we're looking for the point that helps the events of the story most, that's most important out of that paragraph for us to remember.
Which one do you think it is? Have a think, maybe put the number of the one you think is on your finger.
So one, two or three and then I'm going to show you.
Ready, Fantastic.
It was number two, yap.
The harp was stolen by Hades.
Although it looks like Apollo liked dancing, and we know the harp was golden.
Those two things aren't really important to the story and the events that happened.
Whereas the harp being stolen by Hades is really important, It's the main problem in our story.
So that's the one we would pick out if we were summarising and finding the key point in that paragraph.
Well done if you got that correct.
Let's read the next section.
As soon as Apollo noticed the harp had stopped playing, he searched everywhere for it but it was nowhere to be seen.
Apollo was so heartbroken that the light normally shining from his head began to dim and tears fell down his cheeks like waterfalls.
The sun disappeared.
Total darkness fell.
Everything began to wilt and die.
Down in the Underworld, Hades demanded that the harp play its sweet music but it stayed stubbornly silent.
Up above Earth, Zeus, King of the Gods, was concerned that everything could soon die if the light did not return.
The earth grew darker and darker and nothing would grow.
Zeus asked Apollo to bring back the light, but he solemnly shook his head.
"Not without my harp," Apollo stated glumly.
For our next summarising question, we're going to be ordering the main events in the story that we've listened to so far.
From one, first thing that happened in the story to five, the last event that happened in the story.
I'm going to read them to you and then you can have a think about which order they happened in.
Total darkness fell, Zeus asked Apollo to bring back the light, Hades stole the harp, everything on Earth began to die and Apollo danced to the harp's music.
The first event is going to be number one, and the last event that happened is going to be number five.
Pause the video here if you need a little bit more time to look through that and perhaps note down what order you think they happened in and then you can press play when you're ready to see the answers.
Fantastic.
Let's have a look.
So, the first event was Apollo danced to the harp's music.
Second, Hades stole the harp.
Third, total darkness fell.
Fourth, everything on Earth began to die.
And fifth, Zeus asked Apollo to bring back the light.
Well done if you managed to get them in the correct order.
Don't worry if a couple of them got muddled up, you can correct it now.
Let's continue reading a little bit more.
Zeus went to talk to Hades.
"You must give the harp back to Apollo "or all life on Earth will die.
"You cannot keep it unless it has played "its music in this place!" Zeus demanded firmly.
Hades smiled.
"Just moments ago I forced the harp to play 12 notes, "so it will stay with me here in the Underworld forever." Hades replied with a smug smile across his face.
Zeus thought for a while.
"If it has played 12 notes "then it will spend 12 hours each day with you, "and 12 hours with Apollo up on Earth." Zeus reasoned.
Next one, it's asking us for statements that are true or false.
So they've tried to find some main points in this paragraph.
Can you find out, are they true or false? Number one says, Hades keeps the harp forever.
Number two says, the harp played music in the Underworld.
Number three says, all life on earth will die if the harp is not returned.
Are each of those statements true or false? Remember you can pause the video if you need a little bit more time to figure it out, and then press play when you're ready.
Okay, let's have a look.
So the first statement was false.
Hades keeps the harp forever.
He says he's going to keep the harp forever, but actually they come up with a compromise, don't they? The second, the harp played music in the Underworld, which is true.
Hades said he forced it to play 12 notes and finally, all life on Earth will die if the harp is not returned.
That's true as well because we know that the darkness has fallen, and everything is starting to die because all of the plants get their food from the sunlight.
So from that time to this, the harp spends 12 hours of each day in the Underworld with Hades.
During this time the sun disappears, darkness falls and life on Earth wilts.
This is the time we call night.
For the other 12 hours, the heart returns to Apollo and plays its sweet music.
Apollo happily brings out the sun, light spreads across the earth and life awakens.
This is the time we call day.
So now, summarising seal wants you to tell her about your new created story.
We have had the whole thing, and we can use our summarising skills to pick up the main events of the story.
So what are the main events of the story we could tell her? So I've got three sentence stems for you.
One, the story is about.
Two, the problem is, and then three, it is solved by.
I would like you to pause and have a go at that and then press play when you're done and I will share mine.
That was a fantastic summary.
Let's see if it was similar to mine.
The story is about Apollo, the God of light and his harp.
He loves his harp very much but it gets stolen.
And when it gets stolen by Hades, the sun disappears.
Two, the problem is.
The problem is that Apollo's lovely harp is stolen by Hades and it makes Apollo so sad that he's unable to share the sunlight and everything on earth begins to die.
It is solved by.
It is solved by Zeus who is King of the Gods.
He comes up with a smart plan, as the harp has only played 12 notes, he says the harp should be shared for 12 hours each day in the underworld, and 12 hours each day up on earth with Apollo.
This means that when the harp is on Earth for 12 hours it is light, and when it's in the Underworld for 12 hours it is day.
Okay, your challenge task today is this, summarising seal now wants to know what the most important message or lesson in the story is.
So we're going to use the sentence stem to tell me what you think the most important lesson is with the person listening or reading the story.
The most important message or lesson in my story is, that you can either apply that to your one or my one.
We probably will have quite a similar message.
Even if your created story is a little bit different to mine.
You can pause here and when you're ready, you can press play when you're done.
Fantastic.
You are a real summarising superstar.
And I'm pretty sure that summarising seal wants to agree with me.
She says, "you're a super summariser." I've been so impressed by your summarising skills today.
If you would like to share any of your work with me, please ask a parent or carer to share a photo or a video on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter tagging " @OakNational" and using the "#LearnwithOak." Hopefully, I will see you in the next lesson in this unit.
I can't wait.
