Hello, everybody.
It is Mrs. Hardisty here for your English lesson In today's lesson, We are going to be focusing on grammar in particular we're going to be looking at pronouns.
So when you're ready, lets start our lesson.
This is what we are going to do in our lesson today, we are going to start by looking at the purpose of pronouns.
So why we use pronouns.
And then we're going to look at some examples.
We're going to then look at possessive pronouns and we are going to practise all the way through using pronouns correctly.
So for this lesson, you will need a paper and pencil.
So please can you make sure you have those and then we can start our lesson.
So let's start by thinking about what pronouns are.
So what is a pronoun? Can you think of an example of a pronoun? You might already know one, you might know of a word that is a pronoun and why they're useful, why we used them in our writing.
So a pronoun is used to replace a noun in a sentence, and they're really useful because they stop our writing becoming really repetitive by instead of using the same noun over and over again, we can use a pronoun instead.
So let's just recap what these two things mean.
So a noun is a PPT- a person, place or thing, your turn, a noun is a PPT- a person, place or thing.
A pronoun replaces a noun, it makes things less repetitive.
Okay.
Your turn, a pronoun replaces a noun, it makes things less repetitive.
Oh, Whoa, Whoa.
Hang on a minute.
They're little shiny, man.
You seem to be having a few problems, sorting out your nouns and pronouns, aha, the perfect chance for me to explain.
You see pronouns, take the place of nouns in a sentence.
Instead of tell the guards you could tell them, and rather than tell the guards to tell Amir, you could tell them to tell him now rather than have him tell Holly, we could use our friend, the pronoun again, and he could tell her, then she could tell the queen that I have arrived for tea.
So let's just check out.
What have we just learned? What are pronouns? Is it one, a professional noun? or is it two a word that replaces an noun? And show me with your fingers.
One or two it's of course, two.
It is a word that replaces a noun.
So we thought about what pronouns are.
And now we're going to look at lots of different examples of pronouns.
So I've got a sentence here with the noun, Cocoa pods, cocoa pods are grown and harvested.
The cocoa pods are split open and the beans are carefully scooped out.
So remember, we thought that pronouns are really useful because they stop our writing becoming repetitive.
So my second sentence instead of using the noun, Cocoa pods, again, I can use a pronoun.
Cocoa pods are grown and harvested.
They are split open and the beans are carefully scooped out.
Can you tell me what was my pronoun? What word did I use? What pronoun did I use instead of the word cocoa pods? Can you shout out to me? That's right.
I use the word they.
So they is an example of a pronoun.
It's a word that is used instead of a noun in this case, they is used instead of the word cocoa pods.
Now there's a really important rule for when we can use pronouns.
And it's this, it is important that you have introduced your noun before you refer to it as a pronoun.
So let's look at an example of when this rule hasn't been followed and see why it's so important.
So here's my sentence.
They evenly spread them on a straw mat and place them in the sun.
Okay.
So the problem is, I don't know who they is and I don't know what them is referring to.
So let's look at what it should have been written as the workers evenly, spread the beans on a straw mat and place them in the sun.
So now I know that they is about the workers and them refers to the beans.
So you can see it's really important that you always write the noun before you then use the pronoun.
So we thought of the pronouns.
They and them let's look at lots more examples now, so you can use the pronouns.
I, me to refer to yourself.
I would like some chocolate or please give me some chocolate.
What are the pronouns in those sentences tell me? That's right.
I and me, You can use you when you are talking about somebody else, someone else.
So would you like some chocolate? And the pronoun in that sentence is.
you Just check what we have learned true or false.
Show me with your thumbs true or false.
It doesn't matter when you use a pronoun, Show me true or false.
That's false.
You must always use a pronoun after you have introduced the noun so that your reader knows what you are referring to.
So we thought about, I, me, you let's look at some more now, so we can use he and him when we're referring to males and we can use she or her when referring to females, The man waved at the lady, then the lady smiled at the man to stop it becoming repetitive.
I can replace the word lady and man in my second sentence with pronouns, I can't do it in my first sentence because I need to introduce who they are first.
So the man waved at the lady, then she smiled at him.
You can see it stops my writing being repetitive.
And I introduced my nouns already.
So I know that she refers to the lady and him refers to the.
what does it refer to? to the man.
Now, if the noun is a thing, we use the pronoun.
It.
So if it's a thing, we use a pronoun.
What do we use? It.
So the beans are placed in a machine.
The machine is called a winnower.
Here are my two sentences, but I want to not use the word machine twice.
So I'm going to replace it with a pronoun and I'm going to replace it with the word, it, because machine is not a person, it's a thing.
The beans are placed in a machine.
It is called a winnower.
So what was my pronoun in that sentence? It was the word it, So we've already thought about the pronouns, they and them in our examples, but they are used if there is more than one person.
So when there's more than one person we use, they or them let's look an example.
So the harvesters waved at the growers.
Then the growers smiled at the harvesters.
So we've used the words, harvesters and growers two times.
So let's replace them.
Now, the harvesters waved at the growers.
And then in my second sentence, then they smiled at them.
So let's have a chat about what we have just learned, which of these four words is the odd one out? It, them, her and beans.
which one is the odd one out, can you tell me? tell me the word you think it is point to it on your screen.
I think the odd one out is beans because the other three are examples of pronouns.
It, them, her are all pronouns.
Whereas the word beans is a noun.
So now it is time for you to practise.
I have four examples here and in each one I have used a pronoun.
Some of them are correct, and some of them are not right.
I'd like you in a moment to pause the video and look at all four examples.
And for each one, decide if the pronoun is right or wrong and if it's wrong, can you think what it should be instead? So I'm going to read them out and then you can pause and you can tick right down a tick.
If you think that pronoun is correct.
So number one, tick or number one cross, it's not correct.
And if you've put a cross, can you write a pronoun? You think it should be? Let me read them out.
One.
The queen of England lives in Buckingham palace.
They is married to Prince Philip.
So what pronoun have I used? And is it correct.
Two.
The children are brilliant at grammar.
They are also very well behaved.
So what's my pronoun.
Is it correct? Three.
Mrs Hardisty likes chocolate.
He knows a lot about it.
Is that correct? For number three, put across or a tick.
And then if it's not put something, what word it should be? What pronoun it should be.
Number four.
I have lost my coat.
He is blue with white stripes.
So are the pronouns correct? And if not, what should they be? Pause the video and do your task now.
Well done.
Everyone let's look at the answers.
So for number one, the Queen of England lives in Buckingham palace.
I had written, they is married to Prince Philip, but they is a pronoun about lots of people.
The pronoun needs to be about the Queen of England, who is female.
So it should be, she is married to Prince Philip check to see that you've done the same.
Number two, the children are brilliant at grammar.
They are also very well behaved.
They is a pronoun that refers to children.
That is correct.
Doesn't need changing.
Mrs. Hardisty loves chocolate.
He knows a lot about it.
Hmm.
So he, the pronoun refers to a male when I'm talking about me, Mrs. Hardisty.
So it should be, she knows a lot about it.
And then lastly, number four, I have lost my coat.
He is blue with white stripes.
So my coat is a thing.
And so the pronoun that we use to refer to a thing is not, he, you should have used the word it.
It is blue with white stripes.
So we've got another short task for you to do now.
This time you have got to try and choose a correct pronoun and you can see, I've got lots of examples here.
So I've got, I me, you, he, him, she, her, it, we, us, you, they or them.
So again, I'm going to read out the sentences for you.
And then I would like you to write down number one.
And then the pronoun that you think should go in the gap.
If you want to, you could write the whole sentence, but you can just write the number.
And then the pronoun.
Number one, the boy fell over.
Hmm Hurt his knee.
What pronoun should go in there? Number two, the girl picked up the pencils and gave hmm to her teacher.
What pronoun should go in the gap.
Number three, the lady read a book hmm said it was brilliant.
And then number four, the man kicked a ball, hmm went over a fence.
So can you now pause the video, write One, two, three, four, and the pronouns you can use for each of those.
Pause it now.
Wonderful work.
Everyone let's see the answers.
So number one, the boy fell over.
He hurt his knee because we were referring to the boy who is male.
Number two, the girl picked up the pencils and gave them to her teacher because we were referring to the pencils.
So we use it pronoun that refers to lots of things, them.
Three, the lady read a book.
She said it was brilliant because we're talking about the lady who is female.
And then number four, the man kicked a ball.
It went over a fence.
You might have got confused here and written.
He thinking we were going to use a pronoun to refer to the man.
But when you think about the sentence, we're not talking about the man going over the fence.
We're talking about the ball going over the fence, which is a thing.
So we need to use the pronoun, it.
check through what you have done.
And if you have made any mistakes, change it now so that it matches what I have got.
Okay.
Another quick task for you to practise using the right pronouns.
Can you think which pronouns would you use to replace the nouns in these sentences? So we've got two examples.
This is very similar to what we've just done.
Now we've got two to do in each sentence.
So the machine crushes, the beans hmm crushes hmm So what would you use there? The harvesters, and then this is number two.
The harvesters split the pod hmm split hmm.
So pause the video in a moment write Number one and the two pronouns with the verb in between, and then number two write the two pronouns and the verb in between one hmm crushes.
hmm two hmm Split.
Pause it and write that down now.
Fantastic.
Let's look at the answers.
So the machine crushes, the beans, it crushes them.
It, the machine, them, the beans.
Number two, the harvesters split the pod.
They harvesters split it.
The pod again, check your answers, give yourself a tick.
If you've got them right.
If any of them are incorrect, can you change them now to make sure they match the correct answer So we thought about pronouns and now we're going to learn about possessive pronouns.
So what is a possessive pronoun? Think about what possessive means.
You might've come across the word possessive.
When you're thinking about apostrophes and thinking about how you're showing that something belongs to someone.
So possessive pronouns show that something belongs to someone or something.
Here are some examples.
So that chocolate is mine.
Those beans are ours in those sentences, the possessive pronouns are.
can you tell me what they are? They're mine and ours.
And they're showing that something belongs to somebody so that the chocolate belongs to me or that the beans belong to all of us.
And here are some examples of possessive pronouns.
My turn, your turn, mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs.
Well done.
So now it's your turn.
I have got a list of different examples and what I would like you to do for each one is write the correct possessive pronoun.
So again, you're going to write each number and then the possessive pronoun that goes with it.
So number one, it's her coat its.
Number two.
It's my book its.
Number three.
It's his bike its.
Number four.
It's our glue its.
Number five It's your bag its.
And number six.
It's their work, It's.
so pause the video in a moment, write One, two, three, four, five, six, and then write the possessive pronoun for each one.
Pause the video now.
Well done everyone let's check our answers.
So number one, it's hers.
Two, it's mine.
Three, it's his.
Four, it's ours.
Five, it's yours.
Six, it's theirs.
Now for our last activity, again you need to choose the correct possessive pronoun for each of these examples.
We've got four.
So you need to write one, two, three, four, and for each number you need to write down the correct possessive pronoun, I'll read them out.
And then you can pause the video and write your answers down.
One, that table tennis bat is the boys.
That bat is.
Number two, those shoes are the girls.
Those shoes are.
Number three, you live in that house.
That house is.
And number four, we play in this playground.
The playground is.
so write, one, two, three, four.
pause the video and write your answers down.
Good job, everybody let's look at your answers now.
So number one, that bat is his belongs to the boy.
Number two, those shoes are hers because they belong to the girl.
That house is yours for number three, because it belongs to you.
And number four, that playground is ours because it belongs to us.
Great work everybody.
Let's just recap what we have done in today's lesson.
So we thought about the purpose of pronouns that they are used instead of a noun, and that they make our writing less repetitive.
We looked at lots of different examples.
And then we thought about possessive pronouns that show that something belongs to somebody and we all the way through the lesson practised using the correct pronoun or possessive pronoun.
Well done.
Everyone.
You have learned lots of different rules about pronouns and possessive pronouns and have done fantastically.
