Today, we're going to write an introduction to our instructions.

I can't wait to progress through this unit with you writing instructions about how to keep a pet dragon.

Today, we're going to think about, our reader really carefully and think about why they might want to read our instructions and we're going to do our best to get them excited, to get them interested so that they want to keep on reading our instructions and find out a little bit more.

Let's get started with our introduction.

Let's have a look at today's agenda.

We're going to start with the writing warmup.

We're going to think carefully about instructions.

Then we're going to think about the purpose of an introduction to an instruction text.

Why do we need to have one? And then we're going to plan our introduction.

And then finally, we're going to take turns to write our introduction, in this lesson today, you will need an exercise book or a piece of paper.

You'll need a pen or a pencil, and you'll need to have your brain switched on ready for your learning.

So hopefully we are all set and ready to go.

So for our writing warmup, I would like you to write three clear and concise instructions for making a jam sandwich.

Clear means that it's clear to your reader, what it is they have to do.

And concise means that it's not too long and rambling.

You've got the point quite quickly.

So your reader knows exactly what they need to do and how they need to do it.

And I've put there a few little reminders for you, have a go at including an ordering conjunctions, at the start of each instruction, imperative, bossy, verbs.

Remember that? Tell your reader what to do.

So perhaps spread for layout for open your jar.

So think very carefully about your imperative verbs and some precise adverbs as well.

So if you're spreading, perhaps you're spreading carefully.

So thinking about those very carefully, indeed.

So pause the video three clear and concise instructions off you go, okay, let me show you my three instructions.

So I thought first, carefully place all your ingredients on a clean, clear chopping board.

Next generously spread jam on both slices of bread.

Finally place the two slices together quickly, Jam facing inwards, and enjoy! Don't worry if yours aren't the same as mine.

You can make a jam sandwich and lots of different ways.

And perhaps you are more precise about getting the jam out and thinking carefully about those steps.

So as long as you check and you've got your ordering conjunctions, I've got mine first, next, finally, you've got your imperative, bossy verbs of place spread and place I've done place twice and your precise adverbs are carefully generously quickly.

You might have come up with some other ones really well done.

So today we're going to think about an introduction to our instructions, our instructions about keeping a pet dragon.

So we're going to think about why it is that we need an introduction to these instructions.

So I've got an example introduction for you from an instruction text.

And this is an example introduction about ,how to write a jazz song.

So I'm going to read it and you can read along with me.

Are you ready? Let's go.

Do you have a passion for music? Have you ever heard an incredible song and wondered who came up with the lyrics? Did you know that anyone can write a song? If you find yourself having tunes on your way to school, then you will have what it takes to be a composer, read the following steps, which will give you all the necessary information to write your own song.

Okay.

So do you think you'd like to be a jazz composer? perhaps there's introduction has made you want to find out more, so our instructions need an introduction and I want you to think why it is this might be now, this is an example, introduction for how to write a jazz song, but ours will be about how to tame and train your dragon so that it can become your pet.

I want you to pause the video and think that that really carefully, why do you think our instructions need an introduction? You might say your answer out loud.

You might write it down.

So it's up to you, which way you do it, but I'd like you to pause the video and have a go at answering that question.

Right? Well, let's check.

We need an introduction to tell the reader what the instructions are for.

So a really nice way to introduce to our reader, what these instructions are for.

We need them to get the reader excited about trying out the instructions.

I know that from reading this introduction about writing a jazz song, it makes me want to find out, a little bit more about writing your jazz song.

And it makes me want to know, how I can do that and also to introduce what's coming next.

So we can see all of that in this example.

And we're going to try and include all of that in our example as well.

So when I read this example, was there anything that you noticed in particular, anything that you saw repeated, perhaps, anything that you thought was unusual? I'd like you to pause the video and read it one more time and think if there's anything that you noticed that perhaps we might use in our own introduction.

So pause the video, have another read through and try and identify anything that we could use for our introduction.

Of you go.

Okay.

So I wonder what you spotted.

I definitely spotted some things and I'm going to share with you what I spotted.

I spotted that there were lots of questions to the reader.

So do you have a passion for music? Have you ever heard an incredible song and wondered who came up with the lyrics? Did you know that anybody could write a song? So that is the power of 3 because I have got 3 questions and sometimes I'm doing something 3 times has a really effective and catchy effect on the reader.

So the questions to the power of 3, when they're 2 and 3 questions, I also noticed that there was a statement to introduce the purpose of the instructions.

A statement just means a sentence, a full sentence to introduce the instructions.

Let's see if we can find it, read the following steps, which will give you all the necessary information to write your own song.

So it tells the reader, if you follow these steps, this is what you'll be able to do.

And then finally, I noticed a conditional sentence and we learned all about conditional sentences, when we did our feature finding lesson on instructional texts, we spotted lots of conditional sentences.

And that last sentence that's left on our introduction.

That's not coloured in is a conditional sentence.

So if you find yourself humming tunes on your way to school, then you will have what it takes to be a composer.

So if this happens, then this will also happen as well.

Not to mention we've also got a title, which is very, very important.

Okay? So we need to think about our own introduction, our own introduction to planning a set of instructions for looking after our pet dragon.

So let's think first of all, about our questions, what do you think our questions could be? Now to support your thinking a little bit more? I want you to remember that you want to help people who need help looking after that pet dragons.

So what might you ask them to hook them in to get them reading a little bit more? So let me show you one example.

Have you ever wondered how it would feel to tame your very own dragon? That's my example of a question.

Can you pause the video and think of some other questions yourself off you go.

Okay.

Fantastic.

I wonder what questions you came up with.

Let me share with you some of the other questions that I thought of.

So for example, do you want to find out more about looking after dragons or are you struggling to look after your fire-breathing friend or are you in desperate need of guidance? So perhaps you're targeting your instructions at somebody who hasn't got a pet dragon and is interested in having one or somebody who has a pet dragon, but isn't sure how to look after it yet.

So there's lots of different people that we could target our instructions to.

So our audience could be people, who already own dragons as pets or people who are interested in owning dragons as pets, fantastic job writing down your own questions.

Now we can move on to writing our introduction.

Before we do, let's have a look at our success criteria for today.

So we have three things that we're going to definitely try to include.

So first of all, I have included questions to hook the reader in.

And when I write my introduction, I'm going to try my best to use the power of 3, That means to use 3 questions to catch the reader's interest.

Our second success criteria is I have written a conditional sentence, to invite the reader to read on.

So perhaps along the lines of, if you want to find out more, these are the instructions for you, and I'm going to have a go at writing it.

And so are you.

And then third and final success criteria.

I have written a general statement to introduce the purpose of the instructions so that our reader knows exactly what's the purpose of these instructions is, why they might read them.

And if they are relevant to them, right, let's start by writing our questions Off we go.

So I've already included on the screen that a title for our instructions, but you might want to choose a slightly different title.

You might want to choose one that is to do with being the best dragon keeper.

You might want to think about putting a bit of your own creativity into it.

So my title is keeping a pet dragon.

so we can see up there, we've got our success criteria at the top of the screen.

And my first thing I need to do is, include questions to hook the reader in, and I'm going to go with the power of 3.

So I'm going to come up with three questions to hook the reader in.

And I think I'm going to start with a, have you ever questioned, so have you ever wondered, how it would feel to tame your very own dragon? That's my first question.

So capital letter, Have you ever wondered how its would feel to tame your very own dragon? And it's a question.

So I need to finish with a question Mark.

Remember that that word tame means to help your dragon go from being a wild animal, to get used to being around people and become a pet.

To become domesticated means to become a pet.

So have you ever wondered how it would feel to tame your very own dragon? So here I'm hooking in the audience that perhaps once a dragon as a pet and doesn't have one or also the audience that has a pet dragon, but that is not tamed.

So they're struggling to have the dragon do what they wanted to do for my next question.

I think I'm going to go with, do you want to find out more? So perhaps do you want to find out more, about keeping dragons as pets or another capital letter? Do you want to find out more about, keeping dragons as pets? and I need another question mark, and then I need one third and final question, a perhaps a more specific question, to somebody who might already have a pet dragon and be struggling to keep them under control.

So I might start with perhaps you are struggling to calm and I'm going to take from ideas early.

I'm going to take fire-breathing friend.

So perhaps, you are struggling to calm.

calm is a funny one.

It's got a silent 'L' in it, so calm we don't say the 'L' So perhaps you are struggling to calm your fire-breathing friend? and I've taken two words fire and breathing and hyphenated them, which means I've put a high hyphen in between them to make an adjective.

So your fire-breathing friend.

Now it's your turn to write your questions to your reader.

Remember you don't have to write the same questions that I wrote.

Be creative and think of your own.

How can you really get your reader interested in your instructions? Your turn to write your questions.

off you go, okay, fantastic.

Let's move on to our next aim for today for my next sentence focus.

I want to focus on a conditional sentence.

So I want to tell the reader that if they want to become an expert, they need to read my instructions.

So I'm going to start with, if.

so, if you want to become an expert, dragon-keeper, then what do they need to do? Then these are the instructions for you.

So if you want to become an expert dragon-keeper, these are the instructions for you.

If you want to become an expert dragon-keeper, So when we've got conditional clause, the clause that says, if you want this, then you need to do this.

And that's separated by a comma If you want to become an expert dragon-keeper, These are the instructions for you.

And that's my sentence.

But remember with your sentence, you can be creative.

You can change, or conditional sentence, perhaps you're thinking about telling your reader that you can give them the top tips or you, if they want to be become the Dragon's best friends.

So you're changing the sentence to make it your own.

This is my sentence.

I want you to change yours to make it your own.

Your turn now to write your conditional sentence in order to get your reader to think about, Ooh, that is something I want.

So I should probably redone and I've put a little help there for you, remembering your commas on your first idea.

If you want this comma and then your second idea before your full stop at the end.

Well done onto our final section of our introduction for my final sentence, for my introduction.

my final sentence or two, I want to write a general statement for my reader so that I can introduce the purpose of these instructions.

So I want to tell them what is in my instructions.

So I'm going to use the word contains, these instructions contain.

That means that they have, so these instructions contain essential advice.

Essentially means you have to have it.

And I think if I write essential, the reader will feel like it's really important that they read the instructions that I'm giving them.

So these instructions contain essential advice for, and then I'm thinking about, what my instructions are about for taming and caring for your dragon.

So I need a capital T.

These instructions contain essential advice for taming and caring for dragon.

So these instructions contain essential advice for taming and caring for your dragon.

And then I'm going to finish off with Read on to find out more exclamation marks so that my reader knows that they have to keep reading, to find out everything that they need to know.

It's your turn now, to write your general statement, introduce the purpose of the reason why these instructions exist for your reader.

Remember to make it your own, remember to put your own creative ideas into your writing.
