Geography

This unit provides a foundation for investigations of the UK and London or Cardiff, and further investigation of what is special in the local area.

This unit builds on investigations of play areas in the local area, extending work on pupils’ preferred play areas and immediate locality by focusing on why some places are special.  It develops basic geographical vocabulary and simple mapwork and fieldwork skills.

Local to global: how can we identify special places?

A map is a two-dimensional representation of an area, showing geographical features and where they are in relation to each other.

Something that is natural has not been changed by humans.

A landscape is an area and its landforms and features that can be seen when viewed from another place.

An atlas is a book of maps of the world that show the location of places and features at global or national scale.

A survey is a way of collecting information by asking a set of questions.

Something that is human, for example a human feature, is something that has been made or built by humans

A feature in the landscape which has a particular meaning attached to it, for example to help with directions, is called a landmark
