Hello everyone, and welcome back to our geography unit on Brazil.
Now, I'm Ms. Harrison, and I'm very excited to be teaching you our geography unit today.
Last week, we looked at some of the physical and human features that we can find in Brazil, and today, we're going to be thinking about the different things that attract visitors to Brazil and why so many people go and visit Brazil each year.
Now, you might notice behind me that I've been transported to one of the beautiful beaches along Brazil's coastline, which is one of the features we're going to look at in today's lesson which attract visitors to the country of Brazil.
So let's get started.
Our lesson today is going to be all about why do people visit Brazil? And in our lesson today, we are going to recap those seven continents of the world that we practised last week.
We're going to find Brazil on our world map, and we're going to think about why people visit other countries in general.
And then some sites of natural beauty people might visit Brazil to see and some festivals and sports events in Brazil which also might attract visitors to the country.
So for our lesson today, you will need some paper or a notebook to write in.
You will need a pen or pencil to write with, and you will definitely need your big geography brain.
If you're missing one of those things, then pause the video and go and grab it now.
Okay, we're ready to get started.
So my first challenge for you today is to see if you can remember all seven continents on the planet.
So have a look at the map in front of you, pause your video, and see if you can write down as many of those names of continents as you can remember.
Off you go.
Okay, let's see how we did.
So get your pen out, ready to tick your answers as you've got them written down.
So first of all, we have North America.
Big tick for North America.
We have Africa.
Big tick if you've got that one.
We've got Asia.
We have Australia.
Big tick if you've got Australia.
We've got, right down in the south of the planet, we've got Antarctica.
Then we have Europe, and finally, South America.
If you managed to get all seven of those, give yourself a big pat on the back, well done.
If there are any that you missed out just then, then don't worry.
Pause the video now and you can write them down for next time.
So in our lesson today, we are going to be zooming in on the continent of South America because that's where we can find Brazil.
Now, we thought last week about the whole continent of South America, and it's a huge continent with 12 different countries within it.
I wonder if anyone can remember any of the names of any of those countries.
Take a moment.
Look back in your brain to see if you can remember any countries that we can find in South America.
Have a moment, and let's have a look.
So here are our countries of South America.
So we have, on the left-hand side from the top, we've got Venezuela, we've got Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.
Then we've got Bolivia and Chile.
And then over to the east of the continent, going from the south, we've got Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, which is the one we're focusing on.
We've got French Guiana, which, remember, isn't a country in itself.
It's part of the territory of France.
We've got Suriname, and we've got Guyana.
And our focus for our geography unit is Brazil.
So we're going to have a closer look in at the country of Brazil.
And today, we're thinking about why people might visit Brazil.
So first of all, why do people travel to other countries? Why doesn't everybody just stay in their own country where they were born? Hmm.
Have a think.
Maybe you've been to another country.
If you have, why did you there? Was it to go on a holiday? Was it to visit somebody? Have a think.
Why do people travel to other countries? Let's have a look at some reasons why people might travel to other countries.
So people might go on holiday.
I love going on holiday.
It's one of my favourite things to do, to travel to other countries.
And being a teacher is very good because you have lots of school holidays to do that.
Now, holidays are one reason that people travel to other countries, but also, people might go for business.
So if it's your job and you have to go and do some work in another country, that might be a reason.
Some people just enjoy travelling to visit other cultures and other places that are different to the place where they come from, so people might want to try new foods or see a different landscape or different places of interest in different countries around the world.
And in Brazil, tourism is a very important part of their economy.
The economy is the money that the country has.
And Brazil has a lot of income that comes from tourism.
It's about 8% of the total income of the country, so it's quite an important industry in Brazil.
So they get money from people coming to visit their country.
So today, let's think about why somebody might want to visit Brazil.
The first reason is that there are loads of sites of natural beauty.
So think back to some of those physical features that we saw last week in our lesson.
And let's have a think about some of those natural, beautiful, natural places that people might want to visit.
So around 6.
6 million people visit Brazil each year, and maybe these are some of the reasons why.
So one feature which is very special within Brazil is the Amazon rainforest.
Now, we looked at the Amazon rainforest last lesson as one of our physical geographical features.
And it's a really interesting place to go and visit because it's a very diverse, it's very different to a lot of other places in the world.
And one thing that's particularly special about the Amazon rainforest is that there are loads of different species of animals that live there.
You can see some of them on the screen now.
So one in 10 of all species that live in the world are present in the Amazon rainforest, which is really cool.
And there are lots of animals that live in the rainforest that don't live anywhere else on the planet.
So lots of people like to go and visit the Amazon to see all of those different animals.
And you can do lots of activities if you go and visit in the Amazon rainforest, such as hiking or trekking through the rainforest.
You might be able to stay in smaller villages or towns within the rainforest itself, and you can do lots of different boat trips along different parts of the Amazon River.
So that's one place that tourists might really enjoy visiting in Brazil.
Another site that we looked at last week was the Iguacu Falls, which are the biggest set of waterfalls in the world, and each year, around 1.
5 million people go and visit them.
Now, I have actually been to visit the Iguacu Falls when I was travelling round South America, and they are one of the most amazing places I have ever seen.
And it's really cool because, as you can see on the picture, you can walk out in between the waterfalls to see them, and they're really, really huge.
You can also walk along the top of them and do boat trips along the bottom, so you get really splashed by the waterfall while you're on a boat.
So lots of people visit the Iguacu Falls each year, and they are on the border between Brazil and Argentina, and you can see them from both sides.
Now, another thing that many people go to visit Brazil for is the beautiful beaches.
So Brazil is well known for its warm climate and its sandy beaches and clear blue seas.
Millions of Brazilians and tourists from all around the world head to the beaches in Brazil every year to go swimming in the sea or just to relax and to sunbathe or to play sports like playing volleyball on the beach or water sports like surfing, which are really popular within Brazil as well.
So, loads of different things to think about, loads of different beautiful places that people might want to visit in Brazil.
Out of those places we've looked at so far, which physical feature of Brazil would you like to visit? If you were going to travel to Brazil, where would you choose to go? Maybe you really like going to the beach and swimming in the sea.
Maybe you want to see the animals in the Amazon rainforest.
Maybe you would want to see the Iguacu Falls, the waterfalls.
So I'd like you to pause the video now and write me a sentence about which physical feature of Brazil you would like to visit and why.
So it might be, I would like to visit the Amazon rainforest because I really like animals and I want to see the different species that live there.
Have a think.
Where would you like to visit? Pause the video now and write your sentence.
So now that we've thought about the different physical features and the different areas of natural beauty in Brazil that we might want to visit, we're now going to think about the human features that might attract visitors to Brazil.
So remember that a human feature is something that's created or used by humans.
Now, Brazil has a very different culture to lots of places in the world, and many people like to travel to different countries to experience a different culture.
And that might include trying new foods or seeing different local customs and traditions and different music.
Now, in Brazil, one of the most popular types of music is samba music, which is made with special drum rhythms. And samba dancing is very traditional in Brazil.
You can see some samba dancers on your screen there.
So many people like to visit Brazil to watch dance shows or music concerts, including salsa music, sorry, samba music.
And many people also like to go to Brazil to experience the different foods because they might be different to where you live.
So many people visit cafes and restaurants to eat different foods, like maybe some tropical fruits that might not grow here in the UK as well as traditional dishes like feijoada which is a spiced stew of beans, beef, and pork.
And that's something that we might not have here in the UK that we might want to visit Brazil to try and experience.
Now, another important part of Brazilian culture is their festivals.
And one in particular is very famous around the world, and that's the carnival.
Now, the city of Rio de Janeiro, which we looked at last week, is very famous for its carnival.
Now, even though carnivals are celebrated around the country of Brazil, Rio is known as the capital of carnivals.
So many people visit the city each year just to go to the carnival and see it.
And lots of people, thousands of people, go to the Sambadrome, which is a huge stadium which is built so that people can go and watch the shows and the music and the dancing which happen during the carnival.
Now, the carnival in Rio de Janeiro lasts for three whole days, and during that time, the city is filled with dancing, music, singing, and lots of street parades showcasing colourful costumes and dancers performing special samba dances.
You can see loads of amazing costumes and loads of different colours and music and dancing in the images on your screen now.
So that's another thing that's really famous worldwide that people might want to go and visit in Brazil.
Another thing that Brazil is very well known for is its sporting events.
So for example, the city of Rio de Janeiro hosted the Summer Olympics in 2016, so four years ago.
And at that time, 1.
17 million tourists visited Brazil just to see the Olympic Games and the different sports events.
Another sporting event that Brazil has hosted recently is the football World Cup, which was hosted by Brazil in 2014.
And loads of players and supporters from around the world came to the games which took place in various locations all around Brazil.
And that was a really important time for the tourism of Brazil because lots of people that may not have visited Brazil normally came just to see the football competition.
And during this time, around a million tourists came to Brazil to watch the games in stadiums like the Maracana Stadium that you can see on the screen, which was built especially for that event.
So now we've thought about some different human features and some different cultural things that happen in Brazil, I'd like you to think about what human features you might like to visit if you went to Brazil.
Maybe you would like to watch a samba music concert or a dance show.
Maybe you'd like to go to a sporting event like football matches or to the Olympic Games.
Maybe you'd like to try some different foods.
I'd like you to use the sentence starter on the board to write your sentence.
Pause the video now and have a go.
Okay, awesome work, team.
Well done.
Now that's the end of our lesson today.
You have worked so, so hard, and I hope you've enjoyed learning about those different elements of Brazil.
The only thing left for you to do now is to take your quiz at the end of the lesson to see how much you can remember.
Now, if you've enjoyed our lesson today and you would like to share the wonderful work that you have done, you can do that by asking a parent or carer to take a photo of your work and sharing it on social media, tagging @OakNational with the hashtag LearnwithOak.
That way, some of your teachers might be able to see the amazing pieces of work that you are doing at home.
So well done for your hard work today, team.
I hope you've enjoyed learning some more about Brazil, and we're going to focus in our next lesson on the different cities within Brazil.
So I will see you for that lesson very soon.
Bye.
