History

This unit will allow students to understand how English identity developed in the medieval era which informs their understanding of how these norms were imposed during the expansion of empire. This unit will understand how networks of trade and commerce operated, giving them an understanding of the influence on the economy of empire.

Pupils will have some understanding of the Danish Conquest from their study of the Norman unit.

Migration: how was medieval Britain impacted by conquest and settlement? 

This unit will help students to understand the nature of the British Empire and the financial benefits it provided. It will also provide a basis for understanding the relationship between Britain and the Caribbean when studying Windrush. This unit will contribute to the unit on 19th century America. 

Pupils will understand the nature of the British Empire from their study in  Year 9. Pupils will understand the nature of the transatlantic slave trade and the triangular trade from their study in Year 9. 

Migration: what caused westward migration from the 16th to the 18th centuries?

This unit is important for understanding the legacy of empire and post-WWII immigration in later units. 

Pupils will know about various aspects of the British Empire from the previous migration unit. Pupils will have studied the impact of empire on both India and Africa in Year 9. 

Migration: how did Britain expand its control over India and Africa?

In this unit, pupils looked at the impact of different groups and major events on migration to and within the British Empire. In 'Migration: understanding post-WW2 migrant experiences', students will study how migration patterns changed after WW2, as well as helping students to understand the relationship between the UK and the rest of Europe prior to the European Union.

In 'Migration: how did Britain expand its control over India and Africa?', pupils considered the causes and methods used for the expansion of British rule in India and Africa. In this unit, students will look at the impact of different groups and major events on migration to and within the British Empire.

Migration: in what ways did empire impact migration to and from Britain? 

 In this unit, students studied how migration patterns changed after WW2, alongside considering the relationship between the UK and the rest of Europe prior to the European Union. In 'Cold War origins: what led to the breakdown of the 'Grand Alliance'?', students will gain an understanding of Britain's position globally in the latter half of the 20th century when they come to study the Cold War.

In this unit, pupils learnt about how ordinary people interacted with the English Church following the changes made to it by the Normans. In 'Historic environment (Norman England)', pupils will learn how their knowledge of Norman England can be applied to a specific historic environment linked to the Normans.

In this unit, pupils will learn how their knowledge of Norman England can be applied to a specific historic environment linked to the Normans.
