History

This unit will allow students to understand how English identity developed in the Medieval era which informs their understanding of how these norms were imposed during the expansion of empire. This unit will understand how networks of trade and commerce operated, giving them an understanding of the influence on the economy of empire. 

Pupils will have some understanding of the Danish Conquest from their study of the Norman unit. 

Migration: how was Britain impacted by migration in the medieval period?

This unit will help students to understand how later immigrants to Britain had different experiences to those in the early modern period

Pupils will understand the nature of the transatlantic slave trade and the triangular trade from their study in Year 9. 

Migration: how far was England changed by early modern migration?

In this unit, pupils considered how far the expansion of the British Empire led to changing attitudes towards migrants and greater economic contributions from migrants. In ‘Migration: how far have migrants been welcomed in modern Britain?’, pupils will study how far attitudes towards migrants continued to shift as race played an increasingly significant role in the experiences of migrants.

In ‘Migration: how far was England changed by early modern migration?’ pupils studied how far drastic changes in the early modern world led to changes in the reasons for migration and the experiences of migrants. In this unit pupils will study how far the Industrial Revolution and expansion of the British Empire brought about further changes.

Migration: what was the impact of 18th and 19th century migration?

In this unit, pupils studied how far the World Wars and post-war events led to changing patterns of migration to Britain. In ‘The historical environment: what does Notting Hill tell us about migration?’, pupils will study the impact that these broader events had, specifically on the area of Notting Hill.

In ‘Migration: what was the impact of 18th and 19th century migration?’ pupils considered how far the expansion of the British Empire and Industrial Revolution led to changing attitudes towards migrants and greater economic contributions from migrants. In this unit, pupils will study how far significant worldwide events affected migration to Britain.

Migration: how far have migrants been welcomed in modern Britain?

This unit will give students some understanding of Britain's position globally in the latter half of the 20th century when they come to study the Cold War.

Pupils will know the impact that the British Empire had on people who had been colonised from previous migration units. Students will also understand the relationship between the UK and the rest of Europe.

Anglo-Saxon and Norman England: who had power in Anglo-Saxon England?

In this unit, pupils learnt about about about how the succession crisis of 1066 would lead to Norman rule. In ‘Anglo-Saxon and Norman England: how did Anglo-Saxons resist Norman rule?’, pupils will learn how Anglo Saxon communities responded to Norman rule.

In ‘Anglo-Saxon and Norman England: who had power in Anglo-Saxon England?’, pupils learnt about government and social structures in Anglo-Saxon England. In this unit, pupils will learn about about how the succession crisis of 1066 would lead to Norman rule.
