From this unit, pupils will understand the divisions in the Church and the context of the First Crusade in more detail when they come to study the First Crusade itself.

In ‘Significant turning points: in what ways did Britain change after WW2?’ pupils considered the impacts of WW2 whilst continuing to extend their chronological understanding. In ‘The Christian Church: how completely did the Great Schism transform Christendom?’ they begin their study of Y7 history with a survey of the western Christian world in the 10th century.

The Norman Conquest: how do we know about the impact of the Conquest on England?

This unit will deepen pupils' understanding of the role of religion and the Church in medieval Europe and the wider world. It will also introduce pupils to the concept of conquest abroad, which will be revisited throughout the curriculum. 

Pupils will have an understanding of the importance of the Church in medieval society.

The Crusades: did Europeans go on crusade to capture the 'holy land'?

Pupils will develop an understanding of civil wars which will be revisited through their later studies of the Wars of the Roses (Y7), The English Civil War and The Glorious Revolution (Y8). Pupils may also revisit their knowledge of the historic political experience of women, when they come to study the campaign for women's suffrage (Y9).

Pupils will have an understanding from their previous study of the Norman Conquest, of medieval kingship and the significance of a succession crisis, on the stability of the crown.

Medieval women: what can we learn from Matilda about women in medieval England?

The significance of conflict between the King and the Church will be revisited when pupils study the English Reformation (Y8). Pupils will also develop their understanding of medieval kingship which will be continuously built upon, over the course of the Year 7 curriculum.

England under Henry II: how successfully did Henry reassert royal authority?

Pupils will learn about the subsequent role of parliament in the later Middle Ages, particularly in the Wars of the Roses (Y7). This will also help contextualise their understanding of the challenges of ruling and tensions that may occur between King and Parliament, especially in their study of the English Civil War (Y8).

Pupils will already have an understanding of the development of common law and the expectation that certain rights were guaranteed by medieval kings. By this stage they will have also developed a strong schema on medieval kingship and have studied a wide variety of styles of kingship. 

Magna Carta: how did Magna Carta survive?

Pupils will need to understand the context of the 'Auld Alliance' to see how relations between western European powers changed as a result of the Reformation.

Pupils will have an understanding of medieval kingship. They will also have an understanding of conquest and warfare, particularly from their studies of the Norman Conquest and the Crusades.

Edward I: What stopped Edward uniting all of Britain?

This will help pupils contextualise the social changes that took place over the course of the medieval and early modern period, especially when they move on to study the impact of the Black Death (Y7) and the reforms of Elizabeth I (Y8).

Pupils will have learnt about the role of the Church and government in medieval society and the ways in which towns and villages where impacted by the Norman Conquest.

Local history: how similar were medieval lives in Norwich?

Pupils will re-visit their knowledge of the Kingdom of Mali when they move on to study the impact of the slave trade on West Africa (Y8). Pupils will build on their understandings of the importance of trade networks, particularly when they move on to study the growth of Empire (Y9).

Pupils will have a prior understanding of the strength of Islamic empires from studying the Crusades. Pupils will also have an understanding of conquests and warfare through their previous study of Edward I. Finally, pupils will be aware of the role and importance of religion in medieval socieities.

Medieval West Africa: why was medieval Mali so successful?

Pupils will go on to consider the role of the Black Death as a cause of the Peasants' Revolt

The Black Death and the Silk Road: how connected was the medieval world?

In this unit, pupils considered how a range of political, economic and social factors made the lives of peasants difficult in medieval England. In 'Life in Tudor England: was there a 'Golden Age' for the poor?', pupils will extend their knowledge of the lives of those who made up the majority of England's population by assessing the quality of life of the poor by the late-16th century.

In 'The Black Death and the Silk Road: how connected was the medieval world?', pupils studied some of the key consequences of the Black Death. In this unit, pupils will explain how those consequences contributed to the social and economic tensions which triggered the Peasants' Revolt in England.

The Peasants' Revolt: why do historians disagree about its causes?

A study of the Wars of the Roses helps to contextualise the decline of feudalism and the rise of the Tudor household which pupils will move on to study (Y8). Pupils will also be able to re-visit their knowledge of civil wars when studying the English Civil War and Glorious Revolution (Y8).

Pupils will already have an understanding of the deposition on Kings and civil wars through their studies of the Anarchy and the Magna Carta. Pupils will also have a strong understanding of medieval warfare and the importance of the Hundred Years War to the Kings of England. Finally, the declining power of feudalism links back to pupils' study of the Peasants' Revolt.

The Wars of the Roses: what does it tell us about fifteenth-century England?

Pupils will continue to study the power of new ideas when they consider the English Reformation and the impact of the Enlightenment (Y8).

Pupils will already have an understanding of the role of the Church in medieval society. They will also have a prior understanding of the architecture of medieval towns and villages, which will enable them to chart the impact of the Renaissance on Early Modern England.
