In this unit pupils will consolidate counting to 20 and back They will secure their understanding of the teens numbers in a cardinal and an ordinal context In the future unit pupils will extend their counting to counting the decade numbers and making representations using a variety of different manipulatives

In prior learning, pupils will have learnt to count confidently and have developed a deep understanding of the numbers to 10, the relationships between them and the patterns within those numbers. In this unit pupils will consolidate counting to 20 and back and will secure their understanding of the teens numbers in a cardinal and an ordinal context.

Counting to and from 20

Counting on

Reciting the numbers in reverse order to count backwards or down from a given number to 20.

The number before refers to the previous number in the count.

Counting back from 20

The number that comes next in the count is one more than the previous number.

The next number is one more than the previous number.

The number that comes before in the count is one fewer than the previous number.

The number before is one fewer than the previous number.

Counting forward to 20 and back from 20

A bigger set has more than a smaller set.

A smaller set has less than a larger set.

A smaller set has fewer than a larger set.

Sets can contain the same as each other having the same number of objects, actions or sounds.

Sets can be equal to each other having the same number of objects, actions or sounds.

Comparing numbers to 20

Ordering numbers 11- 20 practically

The next number in the count is one more than the number before and there will be one more object in the set.

The previous number in the count is one less than the next number and there will be one fewer object in the set.
