Hello! Great to see you! Welcome to the lesson.
My name is Miss Thomas.
I'll be going through the lesson with you today.
We're looking at short division in today's lesson.
I'm really looking forward to it.
I hope you are too.
Let's begin! In today's lesson agenda, first, we'll be using short division method, where we'll need to regroup in one column.
Next, we'll be going to the "Let's Explore" task, where you can have practise of your own.
After that, we'll be using the short division method but regrouping in multiple columns.
Finally, we'll finish with the end of lesson quiz.
You're going to need pencil, paper, and a ruler for this lesson, so pause the video if you need to gather your equipment.
Here we have a problem: "A buffalo ranch by the Rocky Mountains has 726 buffalo.
At night, they are divided equally by six barns to sleep.
How many buffalo are in each barn?" What is known, and what is unknown? Pause the video, and explain out loud to your screen.
Welcome back.
You might have found that there are 726 buffalo, and that they are divided equally between six barns.
What is unknown is how many buffaloes are in each barn.
How might you solve this problem? Pause the video, and explain out loud to your screen.
Welcome back.
Here's an area model to represent our problem, and our equation will be 726 divided by 6 to find how many buffaloes are in each barn.
Let's look at our Star words for today's lesson.
The first word is: my turn- dividend.
Your turn.
Dividend is the number being divided, so with our problem, the dividend is 726.
The next word is: my turn- divisor.
Your turn.
Divisor is the number the dividend is being divided by.
With our problem, the divisor is six.
We're dividing by six, so we'll need to share 726 into six equal groups.
The next Star word is: my turn- quotient.
Your turn.
Quotient is the result.
That's what we're missing.
That's what we're trying to find out.
So here, we're going to use the place value counters and the written short division method to solve 726 divided by 6.
So first, I'm going to need to have 726 in counters on my place value chart.
So, our divisor- Sorry, our dividend is 726, and our divisor is six.
The divisor is the number we're dividing by, so I'm going to be dividing by six.
I'm going to need to group my counters into equal groups of six.
The quotient is what is missing.
I've got seven 100 counters.
I've got 2 tens counters, and 6 ones counters to represent 726.
So my divisor is six, so I'm grouping into equal groups of six.
With short division, you always start with the greatest value, so I'm starting with my hundreds.
I've got 7 hundreds here.
I need to group into six, so I can have one group of six in 7 hundreds, so I can represent that on my short division method, and I've got one group of 100 that I cannot share equally, so I'm going to regroup it into 10 tens, so my 100 became 10 tens, so I can show that now in my short division method.
So now I've got 12 tens.
There are two groups of six in 12 tens.
I can add that to my written method, and I didn't have to regroup them this time, because 12 tens shares equally by six.
It's equal to two.
Next, I go to my ones column.
I've got six.
I know that six divided by six is equal to one.
I've got one group of six, so I write that in my short division method.
I now know that 726 divided by 6 is 126.
My quotient is 126.
You've reached the "Let's Explore" task.
Solve the following equations using the short division algorithm to practise.
Pause the video, and complete your "Let's Explore" task.
Here are the answers for the "Let's Explore" task.
Check yours against mine.
You might have found the short division method might not be the best way.
You might find that partitioning the numbers and dividing them into parts might be easier, but it's good to practise short division for this lesson.
Let's have a look at our next problem: "A ranger is placing birdhouses on trees in the forest.
Each tree can have six birds' houses attached to it.
The ranger has to place 834 birds' houses.
How many trees will he need?" Pause the video and decide what is known and what is unknown.
Welcome back.
You might have found that we know that a tree can have six birds' houses attached to it, and that we want to place 834 bird houses.
What we want to find is how many trees will he use.
So the next question is: "How might you solve this problem?" Pause the video, and explain out loud how you would solve this problem and how will you know.
Welcome back.
You might have decided that we need to share 834 by 6, so our equation will be 834 divided by 6.
I'm going to show you how we can use our sentence stem and short division method to solve 834 divided by 6.
Listen carefully, because you'll have your turn in a moment.
So my dividend, the number I'm dividing, is 834, and my divisor is six, so I'm dividing by six.
I need to group 834 into group of six.
So in short division, we always start with the greatest value, so I'm starting with my hundreds column.
I can divide 8 hundreds into 100 groups of six.
There are 2 hundreds remaining, so I'm going to regroup them into my tens column.
I have to regroup 2 hundreds into 20 tens.
There are 23 tens in my tens column.
There are three groups of 6 tens in 23 tens.
There are 5 tens remaining.
I have to regroup 5 tens into 50 ones.
There are 54 ones.
54 divided by 6 is equal to 9, so I can add that into my short division at the top.
My quotient is now 139.
834 is a multiple of 6, because it equally divides into six.
Now it's your turn.
Pause the video, and have a go at using the sentence stem and the short division method to complete 994 divided by 7.
Let's take a look at the answer.
So my equation was 994 divided by 7.
My dividend is 994.
That's the number that I'm dividing, and my divisor is seven.
I'm dividing by seven, so I need now seven groups of 994.
In short division, we always start with the column of the greatest value, so here, it's my hundreds column.
I've got 9 hundreds in my hundreds column.
Well, I know that seven goes into nine once, with a remainder of two.
Seven, eight, nine.
So I know that seven goes into 900 one hundred times, with a remainder of 200, so I can put one in my hundreds column, and I'm going to regroup my 200s into 20 tens.
Now I have 29 tens in my tens column.
Seven goes into 29 four times, because I know that 7 X 4 is 28, and I've got one remainder, so I know that seven goes into 29 tens 40 times, with a remainder of 10, one group of 10.
So I regroup my one group of 10 into 10 ones.
10 ones with my 4 ones is 14 ones.
How many sevens go into 14 ones? Well, I know that 7 X 2 is equal to 14, so seven goes into 14 twice.
My quotient is 142.
994 divided into 7 is equal to 142.
Our quotient is 142.
Now it's time for your independent task.
Solve the expressions using the short division strategy.
Draw an area model for each problem.
You can check using different strategies or the inverse.
What's the inverse of division? You got it! Multiplication.
Pause the video to complete your independent task.
Here are the answers for your equation.
Now's your time to check, and if you made any mistakes, go back and correct them.
The time has come to complete your end of lesson quiz.
Well done for all your hard work! If you'd like to, please ask your parent or carer to share your work on Twitter tagging @OakNational and #LearnwithOak.
And that brings us to the end of the lesson.
Well done for all your hard work! Hopefully, you're feeling more comfortable using the short division method now.
See you next time.
