Hi, I'm Miss Davies.

In this lesson, we're going to be multiplying two integers.

When multiplying two integers together, there are a few different methods that you could use.

You need to use the method that you are most confident with.

I'm going to show you two methods.

The first method is the grid method.

We're going to start off by partitioning 53 into 50 and three.

We're then going to partition 34 into 30 and four.

50 multiplied by 30 is 1,500.

Three multiplied by 30 is 90.

50 multiplied by four is 200.

And three multiplied by four is 12.

We can then add these four numbers together to get our answer.

The second method I'm going to show you is the column method.

To start off with, we're going to multiply 53 by four.

This is 212.

Next, we're going to multiply 53 by three.

The calculation that we are actually doing is 53 multiplied by 30, so we're going to put a zero here, as this is the same as 53 multiplied by three multiplied by 10.

53 multiplied by three is 159.

So 53 multiplied by 30 is 1,590.

We can then add these two numbers together to get our answer.

It doesn't matter which method you use.

You should still get the same answer.

Here are some questions for you to try.

Here are the answers.

It is up to you which method you prefer and use.

But method three wouldn't be suitable for 53 multiplied by 172.

It would take a long time to write down and add up 53 lots of 172.

Here are the answers.

When you multiply by tens or hundreds column, make sure that you are doing this and not just multiply it by the single digit.

That's all for this lesson.

Thanks for watching.
