In this lesson, we're going to be looking at the cardinal compass and how it applies to bearings.
These images show three different types of cardinal compasses.
They can all look very different, but they all share the same basic feature.
A compass is normally orientated with north pointing vertically upwards, but it isn't always, so make sure that you are checking the image carefully.
90 degrees clockwise from north is east, and further 90 degrees is south, and 90 degrees again is west.
Between east and south, there is 90 degrees.
If we split this into two equal angles, they are both at 45 degrees.
We call this arrow southeast, as it is halfway between east and south.

Northeast is halfway between north and east.
Southeast is halfway between south and east.
Southwest is halfway between south and west, and northwest is halfway between west and north.
Bearings are always measured clockwise from north.
With this example, the bearing that we're looking for is B from A.
This means that north is drawn onto the point labelled as A.
Then going to work out this angle.
Bearings are recorded using three figures.
So the bearing of B from A is 065 degrees.

Bearings are measured in a clockwise direction from north and they're always recorded as three digits.
With this example, we are looking at the bearing of A from B.
We are given that this angle is 95 degrees.
To work out the bearing of A from B, we've done 360 subtract 95, as there are 360 degrees in a full turn.
This tells us that the bearing of A from B is 265 degrees.

360 subtract 100 is 260 degrees.
