I'll go first to show you how it's done.

Today, we are going to learn to use our voice in different ways.

To identify loud and soft sounds from around our home.

And to identify sounds by listening.

In this lesson you will need your body.

Give us a wave.

Your voice, say, "Hello." And a piece of paper and pencil.

Sometimes in music there are really loud sounds like this.

Or like this.

♪ Clap ♪ And sometimes in music there are really soft, quiet sounds like this.

Or like this? ♪ La ♪ Can you try making a really loud sound and a really soft sound? We can sing our songs loud or quietly.

It's up to us really.

But in music there are some terms that tell us whether the music is meant to be loud or quiet.

Sometimes it even starts really quietly and gets much louder or starts really loud and gets much quieter.

We're going to be learning all about these terms today.

Why don't you have a go at trying out some of the songs we know in a soft, quiet voice and a loud voice.

See which you prefer.

Divide your paper into two sides just like this.

Label one side loud sounds and the other side soft sounds.

Then go around your home and see what sounds you can hear.

Pause the video to list all of the loud and soft sounds you can hear in your house or garden.

If you don't have a garden, it doesn't matter.

Your house is fine.

Match these sounds to their dynamics.

Dynamics is what we say for how loud or soft the sound is.

Great job! Thunder and a lawnmower make a loud sound.

But raindrops and rustling leaves make a soft sound.

What about a tractor, the sea, a baby crying or the wind? Good job! A tractor and a baby crying are a loud sound.

But the sea and the wind make a soft sound.

In music we have different terms to tell us how loud or quietly to play or sing.

The word forte means loud.

Can you say forte? Good, forte is kind of like 40, but with an A sound at the end, forte! Great, so forte is shown in the music by an F that's tipped its head to the side a bit like this.

We call that italics.

So the F instead of being straight is off to the side.

Could you try drawing in the air with your finger, an F that goes off to the side? Great, well done.

Maybe you can try drawing it on some paper in a minute too.

Now, also in music we have a word for soft or quiet.

And that word is spelled just like the word piano.

But it's actually pronounced piano.

Can you say piano? Piano! Piano means soft or quiet.

And just like the F, it's slanted off to the side like this.

But instead of an F, it's a P for piano.

So we know that forte means loud and piano means soft.

We're going to do some singing using these terms. We're going to be singing forte and piano.

Make sure you remember which one's which, good job.

There are some other terms we need to learn today, too.

The first one is diminuendo.

Diminuendo means the music is getting quieter.

It might start off really loud and gradually get quieter.

And it's marked by an arrow just like this.

Crescendo means getting louder and it's arrow goes the other way.

Have a look in this picture of some music and see if you can find these symbols showing the music getting louder for a crescendo or softer for a diminuendo.

♪ Way up high ♪ ♪ Swallows fly ♪ ♪ Diving, racing, sunbeam chasing ♪ ♪ Way up high ♪ We can make our songs more interesting by adding what we call dynamics.

Dynamics mean how loud or soft the music is sung or played.

We're going to add some dynamics to this piece now.

We're going to start off nice and quietly.

In the middle we are going to go forte.

Could you remember what that means? Well done, it means loud.

And then we're going to come back down to piano at the end.

I'll do it first and you can watch and then it will be your turn.

Maybe, you could choose a different song to have a go at singing forte or piano, different parts of the music to make it more interesting.
