Hello and welcome students, it's Mr Latif once again and today in our lesson, we'll be looking at the prophets within Islam.

And we don't have time in today's lesson to look up all of them and I won't tell you how many there are, because you'll be looking at that today but what we will be doing is the following.

We'll be learning the names and the roles of the prophets to examine the importance of prophet Mohamed as the final prophet, and to evaluate a personal response to the question of whether you think there is a need for a prophet.

So remember, there's five things that you need as always, can you please ensure you have the following, your exercise book or some line paper, a black or blue pen, a different coloured pen for any corrections, that curious brain and those attentive ears.

So once you have those, I will see you in our learning today just in a moment.

So, in today's lesson, we'll be looking at the following.

To learn the name and the roles of the different prophets.

To examine the importance of the prophet Muhammad as the final prophet for all of human kind.

And to also to evaluate the personal response as to whether there is a need for prophets.

So really interesting lesson today.

So prophets and who are they, really important and very interesting for many different reasons.

We can find in the Quran the name of many different prophets but we also need to consider their roles and their purpose for all of humankind.

As just as a reminder, as always, these five things that you need.

If you don't have them, this is a great opportunity for you to pause the video so you can get them.

If not, feel free to continue the video as we go into our learning for today.

So what is a prophet? A prophet is an individual who is chosen by God to convey a message or a teaching to their community.

And this message that they deliver is known as a prophecy.

So in Islam, there's many stories that we find within the Quran in which they all deliver the same message, to worship Allah and to worship Allah alone.

But it also teach people how to be moral.

What makes someone a good person? What is a good thing, which in order allows you to have good characteristics? What is right? What is wrong? What does Allah command you to do? So these prophets in their prophecies have two main key things, they come as a warning for humankind.

They come with a message.

And they come with a purpose to serve humankind as well.

Now, we've already looked at, two articles of faith, so we looked at belief unto Tawhid and we looked at belief in angels and here is a third out of the six, the belief in the prophets.

And we find this to be really important also as part of the five roots of the.

So hopefully you can remember that lesson when we looked at Imams when we also looked at.

So, prophets are very important for many different reasons.

So, at this point of the lesson, we're going to be looking at what some key terms mean.

So what I'd like for you to do is the following before we move on.

Could I please ask you to copy out the following layout as you see on your piece of paper? So could I please ask for you to pause it and then we'll fill it in together? So here we have some key terms. The first key term that we have is Risalah.

So what does this mean? Just literally translated it means a message and this refers to a channel of communication between Allah and humankind.

And it's the guidance provided through prophets and the messengers.

Now remember, we also looked at angels last week.

Remember, angel Gabriel is seen also as a messenger of God, but not necessarily a prophet, which is really important.

Now, key things here in terms of describing prophets within Islam.

So two key terms that we have, we have Rasul.

Now Rasul literally means the messenger, the one who is sent by Allah for an Ummah and Ummah means community.

Now we've looked at already in our learning was the life of prophet Muhammad.

He had his community.

He had his Ummah and according to Muslims, his Ummah from the time of his first revelation continues on today.

So muslims today are part of the prophet Mohamed's Ummah.

Why is that? Because he was the final messenger, so his Ummah continues to the end of time.

Now we also have the term Nabi, and the Nabi means prophet, the one who does not come with a new book and laws but implements the rules of the prophet before him.

So prophet Muhammad is seen as the Rasul and the Nabi.

The message that he delivered that we'll look at next week when we look at early books was the same prophecy that was mentioned to previous prophets as well.

So in Islam we have Ibrahim, Musa, Daud and Isa, so Abraham, Moses, David, and Jesus.

And these are individuals that receive revelations of God.

So it's really interesting here, the prophet Muhammad in Islam, is the individual who doesn't come with a new set of rules.

He's just restoring what was said to humanity, that Allah decides, read to prophet Muhammad and there will be a final revelation known as the Quran.

So how many prophets are there in Islam? It is mentioned there are 124,000, but within the Quran itself, its only the mention of 25.

And I mentioned that just a moment ago, Daud, Musa, Ibrahim, Isa, we also have Yahya, we also have Suleiman and we find this in the other Ibrahamic traditions as well.

So John the Baptist, Suleiman who is Solomon as well, these are important figures within Islam.

So what qualities do these prophets have? Will they call people towards the straight path and then model characteristics and behaviour? So the way they act and the way they behave is seen as a key role model for human kinds.

So many messenger read the Quran, they read the stories of the prophets and they see what qualities they have, whether it's patience, whether it's respect, whether it's looking after the poor, whether it's spending all night worshipping God, whether it's doing the pilgrimage, whether it's in joining the good and abandon the evil, these characteristics are very important for muslims to learn from the prophets.

So they gave charity, they looked after the poor, they respected their elders, and we can find in the stories of the Quran, what they were like and who they were.

Now, what's also really important? There were individuals that called people to Islam and to worship Allah and Allah alone, and remember, the oneness and the unity of Allah.

And they are seen as invaluable in conveying their message when a prophet and a messenger received a prophecy and delivered a message, they're seen as invaluable in conveying the message.

It is not their word and they do not earn in receiving and giving the revelation of God.

So at this point of the video, I'd like for you to do the following.

Let's see how good those attentive ears were.

I would like for you to pause the video and to answer these quick fire questions for five minutes.

So what is a prophet? How many prophets are mentioned in the Quran? And what are some of their characteristics? So at this point of the video, can I please ask you to pause and to write down these questions and see you in five minutes.

So remember, a prophet is an individual who is chosen by God to convey a message to humankind.

The Quran mentions 25 prophets although there are 124,000, but the Quran only mentions 25.

The characteristics, they call people to straight path.

They're respectful.

They look after the ill and the poor.

They're honest, and they're invaluable in conveying the message.

Now, if there's anything that you need to add to your notes, please, could you pause the video right now? But if not, let's continue.

So a bit of a thinking task for you to do now.

I'd like for you to spend five minutes on this task, and it's a statement.

The statement says, assuming that God exists, prophets are the best way to understand God.

So what do you think of this statement? Do you agree? Do you disagree? And what are your reasons? So remember what I said, a good IRE student is able to justify and give reasons for their answer.

How did we do? What did you think? What were your answers? There are many different things you could have written.

You could have said, actually Mr Latif, assume that God exists, maybe the best way to understand God is through His creation.

If we look out the window and we can see that God is all powerful, and God is the creator.

You may have said, actually, the best way to understand God is to pray to God and to pray to God and to call upon Him and His nature and His characteristics and His attributes.

Well, maybe you said, actually, the best way to understand God is to read the revelations.

To read what God says about Himself.

On the contrary, you may have said, actually, maybe the prophets are the best way to understand God because they delivered the message.

They were part and chosen by God for a reason.

They were seen as honest individuals.

They were trustworthy and they're key figures within many religions.

For many religions, they are the key founders.

For other religions, they're very important and significant and of highest people.

So really interesting question there, assuming that God exists, prophets are the best way to understand God.

So now it's time to investigate some prophets of Islam and we're going to be investigating, four main prophets.

Prophet Adam, prophet Ibrahim, prophet Isa and prophet Muhammad.

So what is it that I'd like for you to do? I now I'd like for you to pause the video and complete this task.

So you will have to open up this sheet, and this sheet says Prophets in Islam - Summary Sheet.

And this, resource sheet will have the following.

Will have information on prophet Adam, prophet Ibrahim, prophet Isa and prophet Muhammad.

And your task is to read the information and to make a summary box for each of these prophets and to write down some key beliefs held by Muslims for each one.

So what is it that Muslims believe about these four prophets? Now for this task, because it's going to take a while, I'm going to give you 30 minutes.

So please do not rush this task.

It's not about getting it done really, really quickly, it's about making sure you've got the correct information for each prophet.

Welcome back and I hope you found that interesting.

It's always interesting to look at the biography and the life of different individuals, especially these key people within the religion of Islam.

So, if needed to be, please ensure you have a different colour pen to make any corrections or to add additional notes.

So let's go over these four prophets.

Now for prophet Adam, you should have the following.

He was the first human being created according to Muslims. Allah gave him a wife known as Hawa.

And he was created from clay to which the angels brought all the different soils and this is really important, because Muslims believe, that it shows that Adam is the father of all of us, to which we have such a diversity of different races.

And he was tempted by Shaytaan to eat from the tree of eternity, and unfortunately he did sin, he misused his free will.

Now key thing here within Islam as well, he asks and seek forgiveness from Islam, which really tells Muslims that we are sinful and that we should learn to ask for forgiveness.

Now, key thing as well, remember, when Adam was created by Allah, Allah created him with the soil and Allah gave him the ability to reason, to think and to name things.

And he's also seen as a Khalifah.

So what Khalifah is, is a vice region of Allah and a key thing here is, is quite similar to the Christian concept of a steward.

He is a steward of earth.

So Adam had responsibility to look after the earth and to look after all the creatures.

Now, is there anything that you're missing from your learning? If so, please pause it now.

How do you do for prophet Ibrahim? This one should have been quite easy, because you already learnt about him, haven't we? So he's one of the first prophets to teach people about the oneness of Allah.

And we know this when he destroyed all the idols and rejected polytheism.

Now from this, we remember the cooling of the fire.

This is a key miracle associated with prophet Ibrahim, where he was saved from the fire.

Now that event itself, led to many people rejecting polytheism and to accepting Tawhid.

Now he was known to have patience and he completes submission to Allah.

And a key example is that sacrifice for Ishmael.

That dream he has, to which he is commanded to kill his son, Ishmael, he's seen as someone who submits and completes all the tests of faith.

And remember, he rebuilt the Kaaba with his son Ishmael as well.

So they were one of the first few individuals within Islam, who built the Hajj pilgrimage.

How did you do for prophet Isa? A really important figure within the Christian faith known as Jesus.

So really interesting, prophet Isa, mentioned many times in the Quran and his mother Mariam in Islam, it's a Sura named after her.

She's actually mentioned more in the Quran than an actual Bible.

So prophet Isa in Islam.

He was given the Injils, which is known as the gospels and he was able to perform many miracles, healing the sick, creating birds out of clay, able to talk from the cradle as well.

Now in his thumb, he did not die on the cross.

Allah saved him from the crucifixion.

So this is believed that he has ascended to heaven, so he did not have a physical death.

So Muslims believe that prophet Isa will come back down on earth during the end times and he will fight the antichrist, known as Dajjal, so really important figure within Islam.

Now also prophet Isa is seen as someone who calls people towards Tawhid.

So this was to reject the idea of the Trinity.

The Jews don't believe that prophet Isa is the son of God or that he ever said he was the son of God rather he was a servant of God and he was a prophet.

Now moving on, prophet Muhammad.

And our final prophet to look at, and we've kind of already looked at prophet Muhammad, so hopefully you've absolutely ace this.

He's seen as the greatest and the most important prophet in Islam and is the final prophet for all of humankind.

Now prophet Muhammad was given the relation of the Quran, which is the final and direct and the divine word of Allah.

Remember he was illiterate, so it was for Muslims, certainly the word of God and it's a miracle that is not distorted and it's complete in its form.

So he was known to remove injustices in society, remember the term for that, Jahiliyyah.

And he was able to perform miracles such as the splitting of the moon.

So why did this miracle happen? He was tested by his people.

They said, if you are a prophet, previous prophets in their revelation were able to perform a miracle, so perform one for us, to which by the power of Allah, him pointing at the moon, he was able to split the moon.

And at this point, they accepted his message.

Now the two cities of Mecca and Medinah, Mecca where he was born, Medinah where he died, are associated with prophet Muhammad, and they're seen as the two sacred cities in Islam.

Now, if there's anything that you're missing from prophet Muhammad, prophet Isa, prophet Ibrahim, or prophet Adam, please ensure that you pause or you go back to add onto your notes.

So time for a bit of a reflection task.

You have these five statements, and in a moment I'd like for you to do the following.

These five statements I'd like for you to consider and rank them.

One being you strongly agree, five being you strongly disagree.

So what I'd like for you to do also, is for the one you strongly agree with the most and the one you strongly disagree with the most, I'd like for you to write down your reasons.

So what are these five statements? I believe people can be sent from God to deliver messages.

A God who is transcending can only really get their message to humans through other humans.

Prophets are good examples of humanity today.

The prophets are interesting role models.

And God needs to give humanity another prophet.

So at this part of the video, could I ask for you to do the following.

Could you please pause the video, to write down these five statements in the order that you think.

So do not write them in the order that you see here on the side, write them in the order from strongly agree to strongly disagree and then afterwards, can you please write, for the one you strongly agree with give me some reasons.

The one you strongly disagree with, give me some reasons as well.

So at this part of the video, could I please ask you to pause.

So to summarise our learning for today, the prophets in Islam, are an important belief as one of the six articles of faith and as soon as the tradition, has one of the fire fruits The prophet Muhammad is greater and the most significant prophet out of all of them with the revelation of the Quran that was given to him, which is the final and complete revelation and there's nowhere more revelations from God.

The prophets were known as invaluable in conveying their message.

Many of them perform miracles and they're known to be righteous individuals who are role models for all Muslims today.

And many Muslims will continue to read around the life of the prophets, whether it's biographies by authors or whether it's within the Quran.

The Quran mentions many prophets and their qualities, so many Muslims were reading the stories of the prophets to learn about them and to see the significance and how it may influence their behaviour as well.
