Hi everyone, my name is Miss Hummel and together we'll be answering the question; how is oxygen transported around our bodies.
In this lesson, we will learn about the circulatory system.
We will also focus on the contents of blood, the types of blood vessels, and how the heart works.
The lesson will follow this structure.
First, we will discuss what the circulatory system is.
Then we will learn about what we can find in our blood.
We will then discuss what blood vessels are.
And finally, we will discuss how the heart functions.
In this lesson, you will need an exercise book or paper, a pencil or pen, a coloured pencil or pen, and a ruler.

We will begin by discussing what we mean when we say the words circulatory system.
Our circulatory system is formed out of three parts, get three fingers up ready for the three parts.
We've got the heart, blood, and blood vessels, its format of the heart, blood, blood vessels.
The heart keeps all the blood in the circulatory system flowing.
The blood travels through the network of blood vessels everywhere that is needed in your body.
It carries useful material, and it removes waste products.
And blood vessels are like tubes which help blood be transported throughout the body.

Now, once it has dropped off the food and the oxygen, the blood is transported back to your heart through your veins.
The lungs are also a part of the circulatory system.

Why do you think the lungs play a role in the circulatory system? The blood is pumped to the lungs where it drops off waste carbon dioxide and it picks up fresh oxygen before going around the body again.

It transports material around the body, which includes oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nutrients.
And it also protects against disease.
Red blood cells like you can see in the picture, transport oxygen.
So my background, those blood cells are transporting oxygen.
White blood cells protect against disease.
These are super important for your immune system.
Blood platelets help the blood to clot and repair a cut.
This is the structure that will help a scab if we have been hurt.
Finally, plasma, is a yellowish-looking liquid like you can see there that carries all of these cells as the liquid running through here, which is transporting those cells.

On one side, we have the component of blood.
The first one is blank for you to fill in.
The second is platelets.
The third is blank for you to fill in.
And the fourth is red blood cells.
On the right-hand side, we have function.
First one is, to help protect against disease.
Second one is blank for you to fill in.
Third one is a liquid that carries blood cells and other nutrients.
And fourth one, again is blank for you to fill in.

It should have been white blood cells, which helped protect against disease.
Platelets help the blood to clot and repair a cut.
Plasma is a liquid that carries blood cells and other nutrients and red blood cells transport oxygen.
In this next part of the lesson, let's focus on blood vessels and what they are.
Blood vessels are series of tubes inside your body.
They move blood to and from the heart.
And basically, in a blood vessel right now is some red blood cells.
Arteries; they carry the blood away from the heart and they transport the oxygen and the nutrients to the cell in our body.
Again, away from the heart but they've also got blood which has been oxygenated.
Veins, however, take the blood back to the heart with carbon dioxide where it pumps it to the lungs to pick up more oxygen.
So the veins are heading back to the heart and the arteries are leaving the heart.
Arteries are leaving with oxygen, veins are coming back with carbon dioxide.
Now, I would like you to complete this thinking task.

So you might have said that arteries transport oxygen and veins transport carbon dioxide.
And the similarity you may have given is that they both transport blood in the same way.
Finally, we're going to discuss one of our most important organs, the heart.
Our heart is a strong muscle, which keeps all blood in the circulatory system flowing.
First, your heart pumps blood with carbon dioxide to your lungs.
It pumps blood with what? With carbon dioxide to your lungs.
The blood picks up oxygen from the air that you have breathed in and exhales the carbon dioxide waste.
The blood which is now carrying oxygen travels back to your heart.
The heart gives the blood a second push.
Now it's sent all around the body to different organs and tissues.
Finally, the blood travels back to the heart and it all begins again.
We're going to go through it one more time.
So first, your heart pumps blood with carbon dioxide to your lungs.
The lungs are then picking up that oxygen from the air and they're exhaling the carbon dioxide waste.
The blood which now has oxygen travels back to your heart.
Your heart is pushing it out for a second time.
And now it's sent all around the body to different organs and tissues.
And finally, the blood travels back to the heart and it all begins again.
So finally, as your last task of the lesson, I would like you to describe the steps of the circulatory system.
The last one has been done for you and says finally the blood travels back to the heart with carbon dioxide.
And it all begins again.
