Hi everyone, my name is Miss Hummel and together we'll be answering the question, why do people with different lifestyles , need different diets? In this lesson, we will learn about different lifestyles and characteristics and how these will affect the amount of energy that those people need.
We will also learn about nutritional deficiencies, as well as discuss whether there could be a solution to all of our unbalanced diet problems. Our lesson will follow this structure.
First, we will have some Recap questions which will test our previous knowledge.
Then we will discuss the link between Lifestyle and diet.
We will discuss Nutritional deficiency and what it is.
And finally, we will have a debate around something that we're going to call Kewl.
In this lesson, you will need an exercise book or paper, a pencil, or pen, a coloured pencil, or pen, and a ruler.
If you haven't got those things, pause the video now and go get them.
Here are a star words, which are the most important words of our lesson.
I'm going to say them and ask you to repeat them, after me.
When I point at myself, it will be my turn.
And when I point at you, it will be your turn.
Diet Lifestyle Nutrient Balanced Nutritional deficiency Vitamins Metabolism.
Well done.
We will begin by recapping our previous knowledge for the first activity.
I would like you to write what you need to have to have a balanced diet, so there were seven essential nutrients, what were they all? pause the video to complete your activity.
And you can resume when you finished.
Get ready to Mark your work.
Now you should have said carbohydrates, fibre, protein, fat, water, minerals, and vitamins.
Check that you've got all seven.
If you've got any of them wrong, mark your work and correct it.
Next, you should match the nutrient to its role in your diet.
On the left hand side, we have the nutrients which are protein, fibre, carbohydrates, and fat.
And on the right hand side, we have the roles in our diet, which are release energy when broken down growth and repair ,stores energy, keeps you warm and protects your organs and keeps food moving through the gut, pause the video to complete this task.
And you can resume once you finish, Get ready to mark your work.
So you should have matched protein with growth and repair fibre with keeps food, moving through the gut carbohydrates match with release energy when broken down and finally fat matches with stores energy keeps you warm and protects your organs.
Your next and final question for this section is, what is a balanced diet? Which is quite a broad question.
You can pause the video to answer the question and you can resume once you finish.
Get ready to Mark your work.
So a balanced diet means eating the right types of food in the right amount so that the body gets the nutrients that it needs.
I'm going to say it one more time.
So balanced diet means eating the right types of food in the right amounts so that the body gets the nutrients that it needs.
Next, we will discuss the link between lifestyle and diet.
First, let's use your brain to complete this task.
Can you think of three factors which might affect how much energy someone will need? You can resume the video once you've thought of three.
Now, before we discuss whether those three were correct, who would need more to eat, more food, a lorry driver, or a marathon runner? And why do you think that ? Now personally, I think the marathon runner is definitely going to be eating a lot more food than a lorry driver.
Now let's discuss what a healthy diet is and what that means for different lifestyles.
A healthy diet contains the right amount of each nutrient.
Every person needs different amounts, depending on the following things, height, age, exercise, and metabolism.
Have a think where the three factors that you mentioned, which could influence the diet in this list.
You may also have been thinking of things like a profession, which will also affect our diet.
One word that you may not be so sure about is metabolism.
A one way to think about metabolism is to view your body like a car engine that's constantly running.
Now, if your metabolism is high or fast, you will burn more energy when you're resting and even during different activities, which means that you will need to have a larger and more substantial diet.
However, if your metabolism is low, the opposite is true.
So you may burn less energy while resting and during activities than someone with a higher metabolism and you therefore may need less food and drink in general.
Metabolism depends on a lot of things and it isn't a fixed thing.
So it could be that you have a lower metabolism, one point of your life, you can increase your metabolism as well.
Now let's think about this activity who would need the most energy on here so we've got a teacher, an office worker and a builder.
And why do you think that.
Who do you think would need the least? And again, why do you think that? So pause the video, answer your question.
You can resume when you finished.
Now, we builder is going to be needing the most energy because the builder should be carrying heavy things, which is going to require a lot of energy.
Teacher's next because the teacher spending the majority of their time on their feet and walking around, which is staying active.
And then lastly, an office worker would have needed the least energy because an office worker is sitting, which requires less energy than standing, or than lifting things.
Now it's slightly different tasks.
So who do you think should eat most in each row? We've got a teacher or an accountant who sits at a desk, the five foot man or a six foot man, a three year old child or a 30 year old child, not a child person, a professional football player, or a Tesco employee, a teenage Gardner or a middle aged Gardner.
Pause the video now and answer those questions.
A teacher would need more energy than an accountant.
We mentioned that earlier that a teacher is spending a lot of time on their feet and moving around a three year old child or a 30 year old person.
Well, a 30 year old person would need to eat more than a three year old child because they're significantly larger in size and would therefore burn more energy.
A professional football player or a Tesco employee.
Professional football player is going to be training all of the time and is therefore going to require a lot of food to kind of make up for the energy that they have burned.
And then we've got a teenage Gardner or a middle aged Gardner well, a teenager needs more energy as they're still growing and they're still developing.
Hopefully you've got them.
All right.
Now have to think about who would need the most energy out of these two cartoons we've got what seems like a young boy or girl who's on a skateboard.
And then we've got a woman who seems to be elderly and seems to have kind of, I think, as a Zimmer frame, which is something that helps you walk.
Now, hopefully you were thinking that the boy or girl who's on the skateboard is going to need more energy because they are exerting more energy and also children are growing.
And so therefore we'll need kind of more food to help them do that.
Then who needs the most energy out of these two cartoons, we've got a woman who's pregnant and then we've got a woman who seems to be a student, has a backpack on.
So hopefully you said the woman who's pregnant, someone who's pregnant again, would burn more energy because they've now got basically two people to feed and to provide for.
And so therefore a pregnant woman is going to require a more substantial diet than someone who not pregnant.
In your notes, but I would like you to do before our next section is to try and summarise how age height, exercise, profession, and metabolism can affect our diet.
So when you're discussing age, for example, you may mention that, you know, someone, a baby's going to eat less than let's say an adult.
However, when you're a child, you may need to eat more than when you're a middle aged man, because you're kind of needing to grow feed and fuel your body.
Let's discuss what we mean by the words nutritional deficiency, nutritional deficiency refers to when you do not have enough of one or more nutrients in your diet, scurvy was something that was a type of nutritional deficiency.
Now sailors used to get scurvy as a result of a lack of vitamin C.
Scurvy makes bones break easily and teeth fall out.
So that was the effect that it had on their body because they weren't getting the right nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that they were needing.
Now it's your turn to answer these questions.
First, what is nutritional deficiency? Second, who can get nutritional deficiency? Third, what causes scurvy ? And fourth.
What are the symptoms of scurvy? Pause the video to complete the questions and you can resume once you finished.
Get ready to Mark your work.
So nutritional deficiency means that you do not have enough of one or more nutrients in your diet.
Anyone who does not eat enough of each type of nutrient is at risk of nutritional deficiency.
Scurvy was caused by a lack of vitamin C and the symptoms of scurvy included bones, breaking easily and teeth falling out.
Finally, in our lesson, we're going to have a debate about something we're going to call Kewl.
Now, this is all hypothetical.
The school wants to ensure all of their pupils eat a healthy, balanced diet.
They want to feed pupils Kewl.
Kewl is a powdered food that contains the balance of all the required nutrients and essential vitamins and minerals.
Katie on the school council says, Kewl will be great, there will be no waste.
Kewl is good for the environment and we will all get the nutrients that we need.
Sammy says school should be introducing us to different foods and teaching us what a balanced meal looks like.
Kewl is cheating, eating the same thing every day is also boring.
Now, although this is hypothetical, it is based on a debate that has existed for a while.
There are many companies trying to make money and arguing that we can replace all of our meals with a milkshake.
For example, now have a think, what would some of the advantages be for our hypothetical kewl and what would some of the disadvantages be? Pause the video to complete the table and you can resume once you finished.
Now, finally, I would like for you to write an argument piece in which you discuss, whether you think schools should use something like kewl.
You should explain your decision, arguing the pros and the cons of both options as that's what makes a good argument.
Good luck, everyone.
And you can resume when you finished.
Well done guys, we have finished our lesson and it is time for you to complete your exit quiz.
You need to exit the video and complete the quiz to test your knowledge and understanding of this lesson.
I hope you enjoyed the lesson.
Bye.
