Key learning points

  1. Traditional tales are stories that are retold again and again and can be retold in different ways
  2. Traditional tales often have heroes, such as the goats and villains, such as the troll

  4. Traditional tales have lots of similarities

Keywords

  • Traditional tale - stories that are retold again and again in different ways that often include fictional or magical aspects

  • Fiction - when authors create made up stories with characters, places and adventures which did not happen in real life

  • Characters - a person or an animal in a story

  • Plot - what happens in the story

  • Setting - where the story takes place

Common misconception

Pupils may struggle to identify features of traditional tales independently.

Use tales that are relevant to your curriculum, including tales they already know well. If pupils know stories well, they will find it easier to make links and will find it easier to spot other similar features.

Consider your cohort of children when exploring traditional tales, considering representation and familiarity. Lots of versions have been retold to represent a range of cultures and backgrounds.
