Adding layers on ArcGIS
Key Stage 3
Year 7
Geography
So this recording is going to go through how we can look at different base maps on The Geography Visualizer, and how we can add different layers, layers of data onto this map. So let's start with the different base maps. What I can do is I can come down to these buttons here, and if I click on base maps, you'll see a menu opens up, which shows lots of different types of maps that you can scroll down and have a look at. And we can choose this, at the moment, we're on this imagery hybrid, but if I wanted to change this, I can click on a different map. Let's choose this one, a chartered territory map, and it will change the map. And here we can see a, what we call a political map, where we can see the different countries, which could be really, really useful. I'm going to close this now and I'm gonna stay on this map and I'm gonna add a layer. And what I mean by that is we're going to add a layer of data onto this map. So we'll be able to overlay some data that I want to see. So the way I do this is I click on this Add Layer here. And you'll see lots of different layers of data that I can add, but I'm, for this one, I'm gonna add on cities of the world. So if I click on Add here, this will mean I can now use this layer in the map. So I'm going to close this now, and you can see these layers come on. And you can see now I can see the different cities and the size of different cities around the world, shown by these really big circles over here, and the smaller circles over there. Now, to make sense of this map, it's a really good idea to click on this button here, called Legend. And what that does is it gives us a key, a legend, or a key to the map, and it shows how the size of the circle relates to the size of the population. So a circle this size, you can see there's eight million people. Whereas this size is 15 million people. And that gives us a really good way of gauging the size of these populations of the cities around the world.
