Hello, and welcome to lesson three of our unit on healthy eating, writing persuasive adverts.

My name is Miss Bourke and I am a teacher with the Oaks Academy.

Today we'll be doing a grammar lesson focusing on prepositions.

Are you ready? Let's get started.

Let's go through our agenda for today.

First, we will be looking at prepositions of place.

Next, we will be completing a task about prepositions of place.

Then we will be looking at prepositions of time.

And finally, we will be completing a task about prepositions of time.

In this lesson, you will need an exercise book or some paper, a pencil and your brain for all the thinking you need to do.

If you don't have an exercise book, paper or a pencil, pause the video and go and get them now.

Let's start off by looking at prepositions of place.

Prepositions of place tell us the position of a noun.

They tell us where something is.

You can see the word position hiding in the word preposition that helps us remember what a preposition is.

Here is Michael Wallace Scruff, and she found this box.

Hmm.

She sitting in all different places in relation to this box.

She's sitting hmm the box, hmm the box.

These would all be prepositions telling us where she is sitting.

I wonder if you could write the preposition to show where Scruff is in each picture.

Have a look at each picture and talk about and think about where is she sitting? Pause the video and see if you can write a preposition to show where Scruff is in each of these pictures.

My first picture we would say that Scruff is in or inside the box, in and inside are examples of preposition.

If you wrote in or inside, give yourself a tick.

In my next picture, Scruff is sitting on the box.

If you wrote on give yourself a tick.

And finally, I can't see much of Scruff in my third picture.

And that's because scruffy is under the box.

You could have also written underneath.

If you wrote under or underneath, give yourself a tick now.

Here I have some more pictures of Scruff.

Hmm, can you write the preposition to show where Scruff is in each picture, in relation to the box or in my third picture in relation to the cushions.

Where is Scruff? Write the preposition for each picture to tell me where Scruff is.

Let's go through it together.

In my first picture, we could say Scruff is next to the box.

In my second picture, Scruff is behind the box.

My third picture, Scruff is between the cushions.

There is a cushion on either side of her, she is between them and in my fourth picture, Scruff is in front of the box.

Give yourself a tick for every preposition that you wrote correctly, to show where Scruff is in these photographs.

It's time for our task.

Here, we have a story called Scruff's present, all about Michael Wallace Scruff.

I have lots of gaps in this story though, and that's because I've missed out some prepositions.

Your task today is to fill the gaps in my sentences, using a preposition of place.

I have some prepositions of place down the side of the screen to help you.

They are inside, between, out, under, in front of, over, beside, next to, on, and down.

You need to choose the appropriate preposition for each gap in my story, I'm going to give you a chance to read through the story now, don't do the prepositions yet.

Read through the story first, and then we can have a look at the prepositions.

Let's read through it together.

In the morning, Scruff jumped hmm of bed and walked hmm the stairs to eat breakfast.

She poured milk hmm her cereal and sat hmm to eat.

There was a knock at the door and she left hmm her coffee table and ran to answer it.

Hmm the door was a parcel.

She brought the box hmm and put it hmm the sofa and the armchair.

She sat hmm the box.

Excitedly she opened it and hmm was a present from her friend who lived far away.

Hidden hmm the present was a note.

It said, "I hope you liked this gift, maybe we can play this together." There was another knock hmm the door.

Scruff opened it and hmm the door stood her friend.

What a surprise! Using the prepositions that I've given you, see if you can fill the gaps in my story now.

Let's go through the answers together.

In the morning, Scruff jumped out of bed, give yourself a tick if you wrote the preposition out, and walked down the stairs to eat breakfast, give yourself a tick if you wrote down, you could have also walked then written up.

She walked up the stairs, up or down you can give yourself a tick.

She poured milk on her cereal, give yourself a tick for on and sat down to eat, another tick for down.

There was a knock at the door and she leapt over her coffee table, give yourself a tick over, and ran to answer it beside the door, give yourself a tick for beside which means next too, you could have also written next to, the door was a parcel.

She brought the box inside, give yourself a tick for inside, and put it between the sofa and the armchair.

Give yourself a tick if you wrote between, you could have also written next to the sofa and the armchair, give yourself a tick for that as well.

She sat next to the box.

Again you could have used next to or beside, give yourself a tick for either of those.

Excitedly, she opened it and inside, give yourself a tick for inside.

Inside, that means inside the box was a present from her friend who lived far away, hidden under the present, give yourself a tick for under, was a note.

It said, "I hope you like this gift, maybe we can play this together" There was another knock on the door, give yourself a tick for on, Scruff opened it and in front of, give yourself a tick for in front of, and in front of the door stood her friend.

What a surprise! Well done, if you manage to find all of those prepositions that were missing in my sentence, I hope you gave yourself a tick for every single one.

Now we are going to look at some prepositions of time.

Prepositions of time, tell us when something happens.

So prepositions of place tell us where something happens and prepositions of time tell us when something happens.

What times do you know? Hmm.

Pause the video and have a think.

The times I know are, pause the video now and say your answer or not.

Excellent work.

You probably know lots of times, and there's lots of different ways to talk about time.

You might know times like o'clock, three o'clock, four o'clock or four 30 or half past four, quarter past four.

You might also know, months.

The months of the year, the days of the week, the years, you might know times of the day, morning, afternoon, evening, or events like birthdays, holidays and celebrations.

These are all examples of time or times.

When we look at prepositions of time, there are three prepositions that we use, we use the preposition at, we might say at three o'clock, at dinner time, at bedtime.

At is a preposition of time.

We might say on, on is a preposition of time, on Friday, on the 20th of July, on Saturday.

And we might also use the preposition of time in, in the morning, in July, in spring.

What do you notice about when we use at? When we use on? and when we use in? We use these prepositions for different times.

I wonder if you can spot a rule in my table, you're going to need some thinking time and you're going to need some looking time, looking at my table, what rules can you spot? Pause the video and have a think now.

Really well done.

We use the preposition at when we are talking about precise times.

So at three o'clock, or at quarter past three, at dinner time, at bedtime, those are precise or specific times.

We used the preposition on when we are talking about days and dates.

So we would say on a day of the week, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

Or when we are talking about a date, for example, the 20th of July, we would use on.

And so finally we use in when we are talking about months, years, decades, so that means a period of 10 years, seasons and time periods.

So we would say, in the Victorian era, or in the two thousands, we might also say, in the morning, in July, or in spring.

These are different prepositions of time, and these are when we use them.

So now let's have a look at our task.

I wonder if you can use some prepositions of time.

For your task today, I would like you to fill in the missing prepositions of time in my sentences, remembering our prepositions are at, in, on hmm 5 o'clock, I go home.

It is my birthday, hmm Friday.

Hmm summer I like to go to the beach.

Hmm lunchtime, I ate sandwiches.

Hmm the morning I will have pancakes for breakfast.

Fill in the missing prepositions in my sentences, remembering that if the prepositions are going at the beginning of my sentence, they will need a tall capital letter so make sure you've used one, if you're using it at the beginning of a sentence, pause the video and fill in the missing prepositions now.

Excellent job, let's go through it together.

My first preposition needed to be at.

At 5 o'clock, I go home, remembering at is for those precise times.

It is my birthday on Friday, remembering that we use on for days of the week and specific dates.

In summer, I like to go to the beach, give yourself a tick if you wrote in before summer.

At lunchtime, I ate sandwiches.

Lunchtime is a specific time of the day, so we would use at.

And then finally, in the morning, I will have pancakes for breakfast.

Give yourself a tick for every preposition that you wrote correctly in these sentences and give yourself another tick if you remembered a tall capital letter for the prepositions that come at the beginning of a sentence.
