Hi there.
My name's Mr. Byrne-Smith.
And today we're going to be doing some English together.
In particular, in today's lesson, we're going to be learning all about the anglerfish's diet.
We're going to be taking notes that we'll then be able to use in our writing.
So, lets make a start.
Here is the agenda for today's lesson.
First, we'll have an introduction.
Then we'll look into some research and note taking on the diet of the anglerfish.
Then is a task to see what we've learned.
In this lesson, you will need an exercise book or paper a pencil and then of course your brain, that's very important.
If you need to go and get any of these things, pause the video now.
Okay.
Introduction.
So, if we want to find out more information about the anglerfish for our non-chronological report, how might we do that? How could we find out information about the anglerfish for our non-chronological report? How to think there are a variety of sources, where might we go for this information? Pause the video.
Okay.
So I can think of three main places.
Texts or other nonfiction books.
Videos, of which there are loads online, really readily accessible and websites.
Now we always need to make sure that the information we take on board is reliable.
However, as long as we're careful there's lots of information out there.
Today, we're going to focus on texts.
We're going to look at another text, which discusses the diet of the angler fish.
However, if you'd like to do some of your own research, please feel free.
So here's our anglerfish and we've so far thought about its appearance.
We spoke about the lure on its head and we spoke about it's fabulous eyesight which helps it survive in the murky depths.
Now, when we consider the anglerfish, we think about its appearance, but also it's diet.
With regards to it's diet, there is what it eats and where it finds its food, but also how it eats and what it uses to eat.
The most obvious aspects of its appearance that it eats with is it's teeth.
So, today we're going to have an opportunity to discuss those very distinctive teeth which we haven't really spoken about yet.
Let's do some research and note taking of the anglerfish's diet.
So, with regards to its diet, we discussed three key pieces of the vocabulary which are going to be really, really useful.
Let's remind ourselves now of what they were.
The first word is prey.
Now, prey is a noun.
It means an animal that is hunted and killed by another for food.
Synonyms for the word prey are victim and killed.
Prey in a sentence.
The anglerfish uses its many adaptations to hunt its prey.
So, the word prey is a word which we're going to be able to use quite often in this report.
We have few different opportunities to use it and today is a really good starting point for that.
Predator.
Predator is a noun.
It's an animal that hunt and kills other animals for food.
So it's almost like the opposite of prey.
Synonyms for predator are hunter and attacker.
Predator in a sentence, this fearsome predator feeds on a variety of other organisms. Finally, carnivore which is also a noun.
Carnivore is an animal that feeds only on other animals.
A synonym for carnivore is meat eater.
Carnivore in a sentence, the diet of this peculiar carnivore features only meat.
So three words which we might be able to make use of today.
Here's our anglerfish.
Let's remind ourselves of the various features that we're going to think about today.
What it eats, that extends to where it finds food, how it eats, what it uses to eat, how much it eats, what different things it eats, all the things we're going to consider today.
Here's the text that we're going to work with today.
In a second, we're going to pick out some key facts.
For now, I'd like you to listen carefully or read along with me as I read this out loud.
Diet, the anglerfish is a deep sea carnivore.
It has a varied diet that consists of a variety of animals, such as fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods.
As there are so few creatures on the sea floor, the anglerfish can not afford to be picky.
This bizarre species has a very large mouth and can swallow creatures almost as big as itself.
In addition, it's long needle-like teeth allow it to pierce the flesh of its prey.
The diet of an anglerfish can vary depending on their territory and what they can find on the sea floor.
Okay, fascinating.
So there's loads to know, loads to learn about the diet of the anglerfish.
So we're going to have no shortage of information.
Let's pick out some of the key facts.
I'll let you to have a look first, and then I'm going to show you the key facts that I have highlighted.
So, pause the video and have a think, which are our key facts? Okay.
These are the ones that I found and highlighted.
So I think the fact it's a carnivore is really important.
That's definitely something we need to include in our writing.
Also, we need to make some reference to the variety of different things it eats.
So it eats fish, crustaceans and cephalopods.
So crustacean are kinds of shellfish.
Cephalopods are things like squid.
As there are so few creatures on the sea floor, the anglerfish can not afford to be picky.
I think this is nice 'cause this kind of reminds the reader that the anglerfish lives in a very isolated environment.
So there isn't much to choose from when it comes to food.
Very large mouth.
So the anglerfish can swallow creatures almost as big as itself.
That's a really cool fact, really cool fact.
I think imagining this weird looking fish swallowing an animal almost as big as itself is really quite interesting and something the reader will want to know.
And then we have it's long needle-like teeth.
Well, that's a lovely phrase, needle-like with a hyphen like that, suggest that it's teeth are like needles.
Needles are long and thin and sharp and so are the anglerfish's teeth.
These allow it to pierce the flesh of it's prey.
And then there's this reference to the variety of the anglerfish's diet, depending on where its territory is and what it can find.
So again, just reminding ourselves that it inhabits a very peculiar and you know, hostile habitat.
Okay.
Your job now is to use this information to make some notes on the anglerfish's diet.
These need to be written down very carefully because you will come to use these in your piece of writing.
I suggest writing them underneath the heading, diet.
Remember when it comes to writing notes, it's not necessary to write entire sentences.
The benefit of writing notes is that it's quick.
So you can write notes quickly using just the bare essentials.
Pause the video now and have a go.
Okay.
Let's look at the notes that I made.
So, carnivore with varied diet.
Fish, crustaceans, cephalopods, they're the various things that it eats.
Not many creatures to choose from.
I think that's really important.
That kind of links to the habitat, which is nice.
It's nice to make the links throughout the report.
Large mouth, prey as big as itself.
So this is a reference to the fact that the anglerfish can swallow enormous prey, almost as big as itself.
And we have its teeth, which I think we have to talk about, long, very sharp teeth, pierce flesh.
So these are for piercing flesh of it's prey before swallowing them.
And then we have different territories, different diet.
So a reference here to the fact that different territories present a different array of fish and crustaceans and cephalopods to choose from.
So, now it's time for your task.
In your task, I would like you to answer the following questions.
Number one, what do anglerfish eat? Number two, where do they find food? Number three, what adaptations do they use to catch prey? Number four, describe the teeth of the anglerfish in two different ways.
So I'd like you to find two ways of describing the same thing, which is a really useful exercise, really tests your ability to put together adjectives and nouns.
I'd like you to do this on a line piece of paper, so that by the end of the lesson, you will have your notes and the answers to these questions.
For the answer to these questions, you should have all of the information in your notes.
However, if necessary, you can go back in the video and find section in which we discussed these things.
Okay.
Pause the video and have a go.
Okay, great.
That's the end of the lesson.
So congratulations.
We have introduced the diet of the anglerfish.
We've done some research and we've taken notes about its diet and we've had a go at today's task.
So well done.
Well done for your hard work you've completed your lesson.
