Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Weavings are made by crossing fabric strips or threads over and under one another. This makes a fabric.
  2. Weavings are made on a tool called a loom.
  3. Weavings are made from warp and weft threads.

Keywords

  • Weaving - threads or fabric strips are crossed over and under each other to make new fabric

  • Loom - a special tool, like a frame, used to help people create fabric or cloth

  • Warp threads - the threads that go from top to bottom in a weaving

  • Weft threads - the threads that go from side to side in a weaving

Common misconception

Warp and weft threads are the same.

Remind children that the warp threads hold the weft threads in place. These are the first threads attached to the loom.

The weaving for Task B could be created over a longer period of time, with pupils dipping in and out of the activity using pre-cut lengths of fabric or thread.
