Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Group 0 elements are called noble gases (or inert gases) and are very unreactive with other elements.
  2. Group 0 elements can be described as having either full or empty outer electron shells.
  3. Moving down Group 0 elements density and boiling points increase.
  4. Noble gases emit coloured light when a high voltage is applied across them, and they do not decompose.

Keywords

  • Inert - A inert substance is one which is not chemically reactive.

  • Noble gas - A noble gas is an element in Group 0 of the periodic table.

Common misconception

Spelling of noble re- Nobel and the concept of why they were given this name, i.e. due to having a full outer shell of electrons which means they do not need to bond with other elements.

Explain that the name noble was due to the fact that they are so unreactive and did not need to bond with other elements due to already having a full outer shell of electrons making them so stable.

It is worth emphasising the different uses of these elements due to their chemical inertness, e.g. use in light bulbs.
