Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Individual words or sections of text can be selected for editing.
  2. Different fonts can change the look of text.

Keywords

  • Toolbar - the menu you can make choices from

  • Formatting - adding special effects to text to make it stand out

  • Select - select shows the word processor which text you want to change

  • Font - the way that the letters look

Common misconception

You can use the toolbar to change the text on your screen no matter where you are in a document you are working on.

If you don't first select the text that you want to change, nothing will happen when you use the toolbar as the software won't know what text to apply the changes to.

Demonstrating when things don't work or give an error is powerful for pupils to see. Pupils need to appreciate that using a computer does not guarentee that the human using it won't make mistakes. Reacting to mistakes as they happen is a natural part of computer use.
