Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. A vegetable peeler is used to peel away the skin of carrots and other vegetables.
  2. The food skills used to make a salad pot are peeling, cutting, measuring, grating and layering.
  3. We should avoid wasting food during preparation and cooking.

Keywords

  • Stripy - layers of something, such as ingredients

  • Peeling - to remove the skin of vegetables and some fruit

  • Grating - to cut food into small pieces by rubbing it on a grater

Common misconception

Graters are not sharp.

Graters are sharp, so we need to be careful. Be aware of your fingers and knuckles. Rub the food slowly and gently down the grater. You do not need to grate every bit of food.
