Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. All bread is made from flour, mainly from wheat or corn (maize).
  2. There is a wide range of breads available to purchase (or make) in the UK.
  3. Some people cannot eat wheat, which is milled into flour to make bread. A different type of flour is used.
  4. We can use a range of sensory words to describe the appearance, smell, taste and texture of bread.

Keywords

  • Bread - a food made from flour and water

  • Flour - a powder made from wheat grains

  • Sensory words - words used to describe the look, smell, taste and texture of a food

Common misconception

Bread is complicated to make, so we can only buy bread from a bakery or shop.

Basic bread is made from flour and water, mixed together (sometimes other ingredients are added to make it rise and add flavour). Bread can easily be made at home.

To help you plan your year 2 cooking and nutrition lesson on: Bread for all, download all teaching resources for free and adapt to suit your pupils' needs...

Have samples of bread already cut into small pieces, to save time in the lesson. You might want to show the pupils the whole bread (either another loaf or a photo). Use real life examples of breads to bring the lesson to life, noting any allergies to wheat, rye or barley flours.
