Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Materials can be joined using adhesives
  2. Materials can be joined using mechanical fixings

Keywords

  • Fabricate - to join materials together

  • Adhesives - joining materials together using sticky substances

  • Mechanical fixing - a component which joins materials together

  • Deformation - a change in shape of objects due to physical forces acting upon them

  • Friction - the force that resists motion when two surfaces come into contact with each other

Common misconception

Glue guns are a better adhesive than PVA glue for timbers.

This is not always true. PVA absorbs into the timbers and creates a good bond. Glue guns may add thickness to the join.

This activity can be broadened by widening the adhesives and tapes to be used. This is dependent upon the school setting and the risk assessments in place. The activity could be widened further by testing different mechanical fixings with thicker pieces of timber.
