Common misconception
Pupils may confuse commands and exclamations particularly if a command ends in an exclamation mark.
Spend time unpicking the features of both commands and exclamations in order to highlight the difference between the two.
Discuss intonation when reading different sentence types and encourage pupils to take note of how our voices change. For example, our voice usually goes up at the end of a question.
